I don't know, FourPak. Real violence (as opposed to the way Hollywood and the games industry sell it) obviously isn't entertaining for most people, but I think there'd be a market for it.

Does anyone really think this Kong remake is going to be all that? Seems to me a lousy choiced followup, at least from a marketing perspective, to LOTR. I think he would have made a much better call filming Weis & Hickman's Dragonlance Chronicles, even as a computer-generated feature. That would make an awesome movie if they did a good job on it.

lol. The PC version probably got the green light when they saw sales figures for Painkiller. That guy on the box is a dead ringer for Frank Castle.

Weird. Did I miss the English demo? Strange a German demo would be released first from what I presumed to be a native English speaking dev team. Maybe marketing is trying to determine interest in that country?

Thanks for the tips, all. The trial version of Pc-cillin seems to be dealing with the attacks. I've used a computer for 19 years and never been hit with a virus. I guess my number was up I suppose I was living in a fool's paradise thinking that since I never did downloads from questionable sources, I'd never be hit with this problem. Pc-cillin says they are trojans. I really feel like I've entered the world of William Gibson's novel Neuromancer that I read so many years ago about hackers and ICE and whatnot. This is such a pain in the ass. To have to feel security conscious in merely connecting to the internet.

There is nothing listed. It just opens the window and then closes it after a brief period. The only harmful thing that I can tell it is doing is causing apps to hang. I'm running WinXP SP2 with Windows firewall on, but no antiviris software. In over 15 years of using a computer, I've never been hit with anything like this.

Does anyone know about your computer being attacked over the internet by cmd.exe? It just started a couple days ago after logging on to the internet. It displays when I boot the computer and it messes up internet explorer to where I can go to a site, but if I click on a link, IE just locks up. I can get rid of it by using system restore, but thats kind of a pain, and besides, when I log back on to the internet, I just have the same infection occur over again.

I don't think it very probable that the events depicted in the Bible are factual, but that doesn't prevent me from appreciating the tremendous influence the literary work has had on western culture. From what I read it sounds like choices you make can effect the flow of the game like a typical RPG. Imagine Christ giving in to Satanic temptation to rule over all the nations of earth or convincing God to 'take the cup from him' and avoiding the crucifiction. The designers could have alot of fun changing the story ideas around.

I installed SP2 on my machine a couple weeks ago, no problems so far, but admittedly, I have a very plain vanilla internet experience. I just play games on this computer and visit bluesnews daily on the web, check my email, visit a few other sites like yahoo, cnn, barnes and noble etc. I don't share files or download 'warez' so I really haven't noticed much of a difference, except for the popup blocking which I love!!! I bought adaware to block popups and it didn't work worth sqwat but a microsoft rep (of all people) told me it works good for removing spyware so its still on my harddrive.

Wow. Now that sounds like a cool idea. I honestly can't remember the last time I heard an original idea proposed for a PC game. An RPG where you are Christ! It's too bad these people don't have the resources of a Blizzard or Valve or EA. This could have been a very impressive title.

I hope that this time around the books you find lead to ingame quests. That would really be a fun addition. The more you explore, the more the world opens up.

51. Re: Can't Wait Sep 7, 2004, 19:14 Bill Borre

This could be a good game if they avoid the mistakes of Star Wars: Galaxies. Don't make all of big names set encounters. They must ALL be 'digital actors' in the game world 24/7 obviously not played by the same people all the time. For this game to succeed almost NOTHING could be canned. To a far greater extent than we've ever seen in online games before, ongoing STORY would be critical, and I'm not sure enough gamers want that kind of immersion to support it. What made Star Trek work was far more the characterizations, than the situations. The ingame chat would have to go the way of the dinosaur. All players would have to be forced to be in character by way of some type of dialogue system. Very good writers would have to be engaged in the project. I know that Steve Englehart helped as a script consultant on Tron. He wrote many great stories for both Marvel and DC comics in the '70s actually re-envisioning the Batman, which was his version we saw in the 1st movie. Many ex-comics scribes and even ex-Trek writers might be interested in a project like this. I know R.A. Salvatore is involved with writing a book based on EQ. Again, some great fantasy writers might be attracted, though I don't know if the development team could afford to pay them what they'd want. We would need access to all the eras through 'time warps' although mostly they would remain separate, there would be cross-over events. Not everyone could be captain. Being a captain would be rare, like being a Jedi in SWG. But this could be a very fun gameplay dynamic as it would show how much teamwork is involved in a functioning starship. If my failing memory serves, on the original Enterprise, there were about 430 crew. Obviously, alot of these could be bots, but it would be a real challenge for the dev team to design a game that would be fun if all those spots were assumed by real players. When an away mission was put together, obviously many people would be sent on the same mission, unaware of each other similar in concept to the 'private dungeon' design of some other online games. Since the devs have no track record, I sadly, but honestly, think they're going to blow it and this game is gonna SUCK. But it really is too bad. It could've been fun, just like an online game based on the Marvel Universe could've been fun.

1. never an end to EQ expansions? Sep 6, 2004, 19:38 Bill Borre

Hmmm. I wonder how many expansions EQ will have? Are they just trying to milk it as much as they can before EQ2 ships? Maybe then they'll switch development over to EQ2 and let EQ dwindle away. But I suppose they may continue to release EQ expansions as long as they sell. It seems alot to me to ask of the customer, though. I played a mage to lvl 41 on Sol Ro til I got bored with the game. I mean, I suppose a geniune fan doesn't mind shelling out both the bucks for a monthly fee AND the extra content, but I would think a non-fanatical gamer would think of it as bilking the customers. It seems to me that a developer who would like to compete with EQ would do well to create a game like an online version of Fable where player choices effect the environment. That way, new content to keep interest fresh among the players would be continuly created by the players themselves, and it wouldn't cost the developer a cent. I wouldn't mind paying a monthly fee for something like that, but it would obviously depend on playing with good people. I've often thought it would be nice to segragate people by age, too. Since I'm 37 and childless, I don't relate much to teens and younger anymore. I've heard people critize the 'leveling treadmill' but I would keep leveling in online games. I think it is a fun way to reward the player. But I'd change it from the way that most games like Neverwinter Nights do it. I was making a new character for that game yesterday and I was thinking how backward the whole process was. Instead of defining your skills at the beginning and each time you level, the game should award you with new abilities each time you level BASED ON HOW YOU PLAY. I think that would make leveling more fun and the game environment more enjoyable because the personalities you entered it with would truly be individual.

From what I've read about Fable, I honestly only think this would be an interesting game if it were designed for multiplayer, in other words, a single-player game designed to be played on the internet. The idea of all my choices effecting a static environment really has little appeal to me, but if real people were playing in a game world where everyone's choices effected it and everyone was forced to be in character (just offer a dialogue system and eliminate the chat function), THAT would be cool. I'm surprised that no developer has done anything like that yet. I guess from a game design standpoint it would be extremely complicated.
