I just hope he gets humiliated in the upcoming election, then removes himself from the gene pool completely.

Most likely won't happen, unfortunately. From the whole 2 minutes I wasted looking at the background of this character, it looks to me like he's pretty entrenched in his post. But, then again, it only takes someone finding something naughty from his past to brighten up the gamers chances to defeat him...Hell, make shit up, THEY do it, turn the tables...

*sigh*

I was going to write a long winded reply, but I think I'd just be wasting my time. The previous post I made was the last one from my private blog that I took down yesterday. It was actually longer than that but what I posted was the relevant parts even if it did ramble on some...

Basically, and this should be common sense to all of you already, everyone has their own opinion and I respect that, especially with the Blues regulars who've been here, like me, a long time. I'm not gonna change your stance on STO. I'm not going to even try. You think what you want. You don't want to play, that's just fine with me...you go hack and slash a dwarf or elf or something and I'll go shoot at some Klingon's and everyone's happy, eh?

News Comments > Star Trek Online Beta Patched
6. Re: When does this beta exactly end? Jan 21, 2010, 14:37 Rigs

As strange as it sounds, being a lifetime gamer (~30 years now) and jumping online when 'Online' only meant something if it had the word 'America' in front of it, and even before that, I have stayed far from the MMO scene. The biggest reason I think is because I don't really do RPG's. They're just not my thing, especially the fantasy and D&D type. (Funny little sidenote - I could never understand how people could get excited about a game when combat/fighting consisted of standing next to your oppnent, whether monster, ghoul or zombie, and just trading blows to see how high a number could appear above the other guys' head (hitpoints). It just never appealed to me. Where's the strategy? The fighting moves? The fatalaties?!?) So for a long time, nothing came around that interested me. To be honest, the first MMO to come close to getting my attention was Earth and Beyond. But it died much too quickly. I had even been picked to beta test it! It seemed one month they were there and the next - poof! Then EVE came along and I was invited to beta test that as well. I actually got past the tutorial for that one and I was pretty intrigued. I still am, but as many good stories I hear about it, I hear just as many bad ones. Vandetta Online and Jumpgate were also options, but I never really got a chance to seriously look into them. I was picked to be part of the Jumpgate beta, but I didn't participate due to 'Real Life(tm)' issues...
The next biggie was, of course, Star Wars Galaxies. I was really hyped about this one. The press about it pre-launch was all sunshine and unicorns, with maybe some strawberry shortcake on the side. Once again, yep, picked for the beta. Only, this time around, I received the news and the cd's in the mail the day before launch! Thanks, SOE! Love you too! Well, maybe the beta cd's will be collectors items in a hundred years or so?
I didn't play SWG, rather content to sit on the sidelines and read about it's promising start and truly tragic 'end', the NGE. Most of the people I had been talking to at the time who were in SWG quickly left after the NGE and I understand why. Would I have stayed? Probably. I'm curious that way, and I'm not really picky, so if I had some serious time invested then I would have been pissed I imagine. Otherwise I think I would've just kept on...
Now, in the year 2010, we stand at a crossroads of sorts. We have seen the absolute horror of MMO's past that didn't live up to expectations, along with the relative few successes. In a way, they could almost be considered a freak of nature, the MMO's such as Everquest and Ultima Online. They certainly go against the status quo (unfortunately for the rest of the MMO's) and still keep chugging along...
Where does this leave STO? I wish I knew, honestly. Given the previous track record of not only it's own developer (Champions Online) but the rest of the MMO genre. It seems, however, that Cryptic is trying their damndest to break from the chains that have held this genre down for so long. I can't say that the other MMO developers didn't try, but from what I see on the forums and in the beta itself, they seem to be doing everything they absolutely can to make this work. I for one hope they do. Not just because I like Star Trek. Not because I got into the beta. And not because it's their job and that's what they're suppose to do. No, I hope they do because so few have and it's time for it to change. It's time for the MMO genre to grow up. And I hope that STO is the point on the end of that spear...

Wow, those are some kick-ass shots! I think SH4 was great, especially with the mods. (Look up Silent Hunter Files on Filefront) I'm so glad that they're keeping this one a live while so many other sims have died out...

Well, in all fairness, that is the definition of a simulation...

I'm sure there's a niche there, just like the fans of rail sims and sailing sims and space shuttle sims and...

Personally, I enjoyed some of the 18 WoS games, but they haven't been all that deep and most have had the same type of gameplay as the previous one they replace. The last one, Extreme Truck, was a little different and I think they should capitalize on that. I mean, they're not truly simming trucks yet - they still don't have the option for the truckstop hooker mode...

6. Re: New Renegade X Beta Jan 16, 2010, 01:31 Rigs

You know, it's funny...there was another game that came out close to the same time as Renegade, maybe a little bit later? And I was trying to decide which to get. Like you said, it was just at the start of the combined arms genre (I think Novalogic's Joint Ops was the pinnacle of the genre, IMHO). I remember it was a major game and had red and blue sides, almost like Halo in a way. The armor was literally red on one side and blue on the other. The name of it escapes me at the moment. (I'll have to do some digging in my vault...lol) I ended up getting neither actually, though. Something came up in the 'real world' and I was only able to get Joint Ops when it came out way later on...

Mod looks damn good though, and that picture comparison is just night and freakin' day. (Actually, the first thing that ran through my mind when I saw the second picture was 'So this isn't a true recreation'...lol)...

44. Individual sections? Jan 14, 2010, 12:36 Rigs

Ok, I have an idea of sorts, not involving the forums, per se. Just a few moments ago, I was searching through the Hardware Reviews looking for reviews on P55 motherboards and I wondered if it would be possible to just see a certain section on the main page, like part of a 'customization' thing, like what Yahoo and such do to their main page? You could have a + (plus) or - (minus) next to each section and just see what you wanted to see every day...Also, when searching back through the archives, maybe just be able to see certain sections instead of just having to search by word...

Am I making any sense? I'm not sure how else I could put it but hopefully I got the idea across...

That's cause you picked it up IN the USA...I think it's more of a 'Almanac for the world to learn about the USA' than 'the USA learns about the world' kinda thing...get my drift?

Interesting concept. Certainly puts a spin on the ol' RTS model. USA as the bad guys? Who woulda thought?!?...

News Comments > New ATI Reference Drivers
7. Re: New ATI Reference Drivers Dec 17, 2009, 22:10 Rigs

Tired of ATI

I have to say, that with only a few problems here and there, such as your problem, Ray, I am extremely pleased with the way ATI has been keeping on the ball with it's drivers the last few months, and even years. I'm sure we can all remember back in the day (late '90s, early 2000s) when ATI's drivers were something to be feared. Not by the competition, but by it's own users. I was a dedicated nVidia fan since the original TNT and Geforce 2MX series (which I personally think helped to bring vid cards into the affordable range and keep it there). ATI, at the time, in my mind was more a business product. In my various temping at many different large companies in the NYC/NJ metro area, most of them had systems with an ATI card of some sort installed. While enough for a Windows NT or 95/98 system pushing Word and Excel all day, they were far too underpowered for the gaming scene. And many times caused glitches and problems just doing some of the simple tasks. (I hope to never have to relive the horror of trying to get work done on an old DELL or Compaq with Windows NT on a misbehaving ATI card, suffering massive migrains trying to see on a 'tiny' 14"/15" CRT! And don't even get me started on the S3 vid cards or Matrox. Makes my head hurt just thinking about it)...
But when the Radeon series started and the 9600 and 9800 PRO's came out, ATI started to come around. True, the drivers were atrocious, but they got better with each version. This is why they still stand while others, like 3DFX and Rendition, have fallen. (No, I'm not claiming that's the only reason for their downfalls, but it played a part, however small) nVidia was king, but ATI seemed to keep their eye on the prize and just work through it. After getting my 9800PRO, I haven't looked back. Now, after a 9800PRO AIW, X850PRO, HD2400, HD4870 and HD5770, I'm perfectly happy with my choice to jump ship. While nVidia has gone spinning out of touch with the market it helped to build, ATI has just slipped in with what matters - good vid cards, good inventory and respectable drivers...

And honestly I don't believe there were any good pre-cgi ship battles except for The Wrath of Khan.

Hmm, the one that always (and will always) sticks in my mind is the destruction of the USS Odyssey toward the end of DS9's episode 'The Jem'Hadar'. I don't know if it was a real model or cgi, but wholly crap! I remember being on the phone with a friend at the time and not really following the episode that closely and then watching it first trying to limp away (which was damn awesome to see, what with a failing warp nacelle n' all) and then being 'kamakazied' - right out of nowhere! I was like, 'Holy shit! They just destroyed a Galaxy class!'...I know it doesn't stand up with some of the battle scenes later in the series, but they got the intended effect on me, and if it was with a real model, then more power to them!...
