Another headline: 'File-NUKING Cryptolocker PC malware MENACES 'TENS of MILLIONS' in UK - Back up before devil PC malware demands 860 BUCKS (530 quid)'

Damn. This shit is getting serious! Figures the hackers wouldn't be able to keep it in their pants, so to speak and are now demanding absurd amounts just to get data back. First it was $100, then $300, now $860! Greedy mothers...then again, I guess they can be with such a foolproof way of getting what they want. Wait for this kind of attack to explode in popularity very soon. Might as well just unhook your system from the Net...or get a tablet for going on the Net and keep the PC off...

I wonder if the new AMD Firepro s10000 cards help with mining? Because mining with regular gpu's is just about a dead art, unless you happen to have access to a AMD-based supercomputer (one with lots of AMD gpu's). Speaking of which, I wonder why AMD isn't more involved in the movement? I'm sure it's made them a lot of money as well. If you're interested in getting into mining, now would be the time to look into 'litecoins' as mining bitcoins is getting to be just about impossible for the common layman...

I agree with every single one of these points. Hopefully Egosoft can fix most/all of these issues, but it's going to take awhile.

I think they just ran out of money and released it. Even some of the long time testers are saying it's in essence just a public Beta.

Just a public Beta? More like just a fucking mess. My god, what a disaster. I'd really hoped that it was just so different from other X games that people were confused but it's like Ego totally took X apart bit by bit to replace everything and then forgot how to put it back together and then got bored/tired of trying and said, 'Fuck it!' and released it! Seriously, so many things that were in previous releases, things that didn't need work whatsoever (like a damn radar, of all things!) are missing or totally screwed! Why?! That's what I kept saying to myself and what a review from me would be...'Why, Egosoft?! WHY?!'. I don't understand the mindset that went into the changes. Why do the npc's/co-pilot look absolutely horrendous? I thought X2 was pretty bad in that area, but it was kind of just an annoyance and cringe-worthy, but XB just knocks that right out of the park! With SO many modelers and 3D animators out there, why do they have such a hard time with something so simple? And the co-pilot...if you want to call it that...just sits there and does nothing. ??? Like they had a plan and then said, 'Fuck it!'. This shouldn't have been X: Rebirth, it should have been X: BTF2: WTF?!...

Huh? You download the MotioninJoy tool, run it, load the driver and BAM! Done. (Oh, and have the DS3 controller hooked up, either via BT or, as I do, USB)...nothing much sophisticated to it. I actually retired my long-suffering Logi Rumblepad2 because using the DS3 controller is a better/smoother experience...

Laugh. You realize that you ask for hard numbers...they're given...and you continue to try to refute them with a single months or years old bit of data, right? The season's viewership is down 25 percent in just a few weeks. That puts it lower than where the last season ended... But when it doesn't go your way...suddenly it's not applicable or the fault of the writers. Gotcha.

Regardless, you're going to continue wasting time with straw men, as in your silly FPS argument (a genre with a 20 year steady track record), so I think we're done. You won. Zombies are the new pinnacle of media (ignoring historical data and cyclical trends since they first hit pop culture). Thank you for enlightening me. In 18-24 months, you're welcome to come back and make me eat crow over the continuing thriving state of zombies in media. But we both know that won't be the case.

Hmmm...on the internet, no one really gives of fuck if you won an argument. Good day.

and now Egosoft finally gives us what we asked for

Except very few X fans ever asked for a new UI. I thought the UI in TC worked just fine. Yes, it was complex, because it's a complex game, but it did everything it needed to, and did so quickly and without fuss.

Now, in an effort to get new players, Egosoft builds a new UI, which is fucking terrible, and which also pisses off their old players.

I don't know about X fans but most people that stated that they tried it and didn't like it (here on BN) was because of the UI. 'Too many menus', 'Things are too hard to find', 'You have to search for what you want' and that there weren't any decent tutorials in game telling you what to do if you were new at it. Obviously, those of us who are avid players have been using it since pretty much the beginning and have no problems getting what we need (such as your 'C,2,1 in 0.01 seconds' below). New (or newer) players are plopped down in a ship in a rather empty sector with nothing happening and no direction at the start. The biggest question I've seen after all these years is, 'Ok, what now?'.

So I can understand Egosoft wanting to do something about that to make it more accessible. And there's nothing wrong with that, contrary to some thinking it 'dumbs it down' or it smacks of 'consolitis' (yes, I've seen comments that have said that, mainly on Youtube - of course). But before you throw out the baby with the bath water, make sure you give yourself enough time to make sure your new 'super duper GUI extravaganza' is ready for prime time!

...

profit?

How ANYONE at that company looked at the new UI and went "Job well done, fellas! This is just the pinnacle of space game UIs!" is beyond belief.

Why is there a fucking DELAY in the UI selections? In TC, you go C, 2, 1 in 0.01 seconds, and docking permissions is granted. Here's it's enter. Wait a second. Hit 5. Wait a second. Hit 5 again.

BETTER!

:\

Apparently, the 'new' problems that Egosoft are now diligently working to fix weren't exactly 'new'. At least, that's what I gather from the blurb here at IncGamers...specifically, this part:

IncGamers will be publishing a review of X Rebirth in the future, but as beta code only functioned intermittently for us and the game is gigantic, we wont be rushing with this one. Early indications show its pretty rough around the edges.

[ EDIT: Also, this...Egosoft apologise for the state of X Rebirth Bugs being investigated ]

I can see when a dev introduces a new way of doing things in a series, something that wasn't done before, they would have problems. But that's when you keep the game until it's all fixed! Even our beloved Egosoft are not infallible, yet it seems like the whole industry is forgetting this one fundamental fact! Maybe it's because of the blurring of the lines between 'concept', 'alpha', 'beta' and 'early release' that devs are becoming more comfortable with sending out games that just aren't quite ready for prime time only to fix them out in the wild. Granted, that's kind of par for the course when it comes to Egosoft, but I think this time it bit them in the ass. Or more to the point, they bit off more than they could possibly chew in the amount of time they'd been given. If problems were evident during this whole time (now I really wish I'd signed the NDA when I had the chance, because I'm seriously curious if this was the case) then the game should have been held until a more stable version could be made available. When they come out to the community and act like this is all news to them, it gets me thinking they knew what was going to happen all along and went with it anyway. Again, previous releases were pretty rough too, but this kind of thing, which is becoming endemic in this industry lately, needs to stop! Nowhere else could an industry get away with releasing products that half-worked or were bugged, with the developers full knowledge, only to be steadily fixed after. Egosoft doesn't get a pass just because it's something they're 'known for'...(or because we love the little bastards)...

Blegh. Anyway, I'll put it away for a month or so, give them time to work on it, and come back to it for the Xmas holiday.

I thought this is the Xmas holiday? All the stores seem to think so...

X: BTF: 'What the hell am I doing? Where am I going? WHO the hell am I?!'

Xtension: 'Ah, time to make some money!'

X2: 'Ok, this is a little better...graphics are a little flashier! Nice. Oh god, that animation and lip-sync is horrendous! Turn it off! How do I...oh, oooh, nice menus! What's this? External cameras?! Yeah buddy! The Khaak?! Really? All the super awesometacular sci-fi names out there and you come up with that? Adam Sessler's gonna have a field day with this...'

X3: 'Alright, now let's go out there and kick some ass! My god, so many different ships! Ok, Egosoft, who ate my cockpit?! Eeh, doesn't matter, someone will mod it in sooner or...and there it is! Man you guys are quick! Now, time to develop a good money making strategy. Set up trade routes, supply runs, convoy escorts. Still lovin' those external cams!'

X3-AP: 'Finally, some intrigue, romance and suspense! A storyline? Ok, I'll bite. Let me get my macros set and all my bindings done...OK! I really wish they would streamline these menus and lists! Where's the innovation, Egosoft? They're practically the same thing since the first X, only prettier and with more 'depth'. Wouldn't hurt to bring in some tabs or something or re-arrange the menus to eliminate some of the excessive clicking...Anyway, where were we? Oh right! 'It was a dark and stormy nebula...'

X-Rebirth:
'I WANT THE MENUS BACK! PLEASE GIVE US THE OLD UI BACK! I PROMISE I'LL NEVER COMPLAIN ABOUT IT AGAIN! I'm so lost! First MicroSoft takes away the Start Menu and now Egosoft finally gives us what we asked for...I wanna go back! Puppyeyes I WANNA GO BACK! Crying *stomps feet

...We find 'Rigs', after a search consisting of nearly two whole minutes, in the corner of a sparsely used closet, his hair disheveled, his eyes locked forward, focusing on some unseen object that apparently only he can see, his head shaking left and right, as if something absolutely terrifying was befalling him at that very moment, a barely audible cry of 'No..no no no...it's all gone...it's all different...' can be heard in-between bouts of nail biting and thumb sucking...the only piece of clothing, a dark blue t-shirt with some sort of emblem on the breast pocket area, but the only thing that can be made out when it's time to change thumbs is 'something News'...A perplexing situation, indeed!

System Shock 2

Obviously you'll want to grab the latest SHTUP and rebirth mods for SS2, the first provides higher res texture, the second high res enemy models. Can get those here , some other good mods and that over at https://www.systemshock.org/ as well (for both SS and thief).

Wow, those certainly look awesometacular! So, just to run this thread completely off the rails, what would someone need for the 'ultimate experience' for their first virgin run through? (I've never played any of the Thief series or SS2, though I've always wanted to try) Since the graphics were one thing that kept me from doing so and they don't seem to be an issue anymore, what exactly all do I need to get to what's shown in those vids?

So I see you guys aren't going to let me be lazy and tell me everything up front so I don't have to learn by trial and error (not to mention hours on end of learning and understanding)...no, no, that's fine. I understand. There are more important matters to attend to than telling me where to go (AHEM! Don't even think about it! ) like getting X: Rebirth to run at a decent frame rate and unboxing that new PS4 that just arrived. Well, in light of those, my quest does seem a bit...quaint. So, go on, I won't hold it against you. I'm not the type to cause a scene...

Okay, thanks to your feedback. I won't buy it right now. It's obviously again a botched release with many problems. What a shame. I'm sure Egosoft will fix these with a year or so, and then it'll be cheaper anyway. Back to Path of Exile, Act II.

Now, now, I'd seriously consider both sides here (yes, I'm a fanboy in a sinking cruise liner trying to bail it out with a soup ladle but hear me out)...there are lots of negative but there are also some that don't seem to have many, if only a slight few, problems, and nothing game breaking. Just because it's somewhat buggy doesn't mean it can't be enjoyed. (Hell, look at Daikatan...ok, bad example...look at Alie...ok, maybe not (though that has improved considerably since release!)...just remember how Battlecruiser3-...ok, I'm not helping myself here, I admit ) I say, go with your own opinion. You might be surprised!

Ya, i saw in a previous dev diary that shadows really hammer systems and that they spent a lot of effort on making the medium and lower shadow shaders look really good.

Shadows are the first thing in almost any game I turn down or off! They are always performance killers, the question is just how much? Obviously turning v-sync off and any AA and AF will help as well...

EDIT: Also want to re-iterate to you guys, as some forget in the confusion of getting a new game to run, to make sure you don't have any AA or AF 'forced' in the driver settings...sometimes you might have it set like so for one game and then forget to disable it when starting a new one (something I've done on occasion!)...

Yeah, something tells me that the wrong release was...released...God, PLEASE DON'T BE ANOTHER SOTS2, Egosoft! PLEASE!!!

The thing about testers just signing an NDA to play early...eeh, yes and no. You get a few (and of course, at first everyone wants to play) but once that wears off and there's work to be done, the core community springs into action and starts bug huntin'/breaking shit. Have you guys actually seen the bug tracker and bug/glitch forum? Very thorough and complete, especially from such a 'small' studio like Egosoft. Impressive, really...

I'm not going to go by any reviews/impressions/first thoughts/lets plays...my opinion is my own and I know what I like and I can typically handle some bugs and glitching. I see the masterpiece underneath so I'm not going to let things cloud my judgement...

BTW, about five minutes after release, there was a torrent posted. Might have been fake but it's got like 10,000 leechers now, so...

Only one playable ship? X was good but it's not good enough to give up the fleet collecting, carrier captaining aspect.

I have no doubt whatsoever that other ships/cockpits will be modded in within a few days/weeks. The reasoning was that many players never really spent much time actually navigating a large warship/freighter because they were such ponderous slugs. Most, it was reckoned, just jumped onto the bridge to handle fitting out of weapons/cargo and ships (in the case of carriers/frigates/corvettes) and right back out to a smaller vessel. In a way, they're right. Still, it would be nice to have the choice. Aside from story-wise, I don't see a real technical reason why they couldn't do it....

After the first two weeks, I stopped using my brain and went with the majority, with the exception of all GIANTS games, of course, and some that I felt might be 'sure things', like the Bucs couldn't possibly lose 5/6/7 games in a row...could they? (FFFFFUUUUUU....!) I also always go for Dallas because it was my fathers team. And yes, the 49-17 slaughter they took last week made me cringe. It downright made me sick to my stomach! How the HELL do you lose so bad? Geezus...

I've noticed that even though I have a 57% success rate, once you fall down to the bottom levels, it's almost impossible to make it up unless you manage to get every single one right, which is...almost impossible. I don't care what anyone says, these things are by luck and I think everyone's record shows this...

'I know what you think you are, what you want us to believe! But I don't buy it! For three years now you've been pulling everyone's strings, getting us to do all the work, and you haven't done a damn thing except stand there and look cryptic.'
