Also no love for Earth 2150?

Blech! 2150 must have been one of the ugliest RTS's I've ever seen! Now 2160 wasn't too bad, I actually bought that one. Apparently, though, it's somewhat different from it's older siblings. I never really had any interest in playing the other Earth-series games because looking at them for any length of time caused my eyes to bleed...

Wish I had played TA when it was out all those years ago. I completely shunned the genre when it was big and bad and everyone wanted a piece of the action. After everyone found out that RTS games weren't the Holy Grail and you couldn't shoehorn every design to be an RTS (though the RTS/FPS mashups were fun if they managed to get it right, like Battlezone2 and Hostile Waters), I started playing games in the genre. But I never really got to TA before it became a relic and then shortly after SC came out and I was playing that...so...yeah...

Ugh...basically if you loved the original UT and Quake3, then this is your game, otherwise stay away...far away...Team play? Yeah, if you can get your 'team' to shut up for two seconds and not have them curse you out in the same amount of time....

I'm going to go all stupid on you guys for a second, but beyond the obvious fanboy appeal (disclaimer, 'Hi, my name is Michael Rigs and I'm a Halo fanboy...') why the hell do they keep pumping these things out, from two different developers, no less?!? The engine is ancient and decrepit, the mechanics are decrepit, there's no 'innovation' beyond the obvious (oh look, a dog...can I name him 'Chop'? ) and yet they sell a billion with every release...why?! Why can Activision get away with NOT innovating, not updating it's engine and mechanics every few years, not trying something different every few years...I mean this just feels like BO2 and MW3 combined into one big mess. It's not like *R uses the same engin...errr...ok, bad example...

From my Facebook post on his death...

Of all the books I've read by Clancy, my first, Red Storm Rising, is my favorite. It's a rather long book and in the end, it gets pretty 'hectic' (as much as a book can be anyway) with shifting perspectives every few paragraphs as the story is showing something happening in two different places at the same time that influence each other. I picked it up to read on the move down here to FL in Sept of 1993 (what turned out to be a 3-day drive). It took me another two months to finish. During lunch at a new school, where I knew no one, I would sit alone and read. I got a lot of stares but I didn't care. It's a fascinating look into what would happen if the Soviet Union would have actually invaded into Germany as NATO feared it always would after an attack on it's oil reserves leave it with no other option. I've read it three times over since and it's always kept me turning the page even though I know what's going to happen anyway...As for the rest, Sum of All Fears was pretty good and VASTLY superior to the movie, which took nearly nothing but the name from it. The final nuke doesn't go off in Baltimore during a basketball game, it goes off in Denver during a football game (maybe even the Super Bowl, I can't remember exactly). The President IS there and he survives. But goes crazy. (You have to read it) The bomb makers are Muslim, not 'neo'-Nazi's. The Cardinal Of The Kremlin is a really good spy novel, if anyone likes them. It was a good read, my third book. Clear And Present Danger was good too, and the movie stays pretty much close to the book but is different in many ways. The very end is different.

Aside from Red Storm Rising, my other fav is Without Remorse. It's one book that Clancy strayed from the normal military narrative to tell a character-driven story about how the tough specialist 'John Clark' came to be and what his past was. There isn't a lot of pure 'bang bang' or 'military jargon' in it, at least not nearly as much as the others. It's very gripping though and an excellent story.

I'm gonna really miss this guy. I spent untold hours reading what he wrote and find him as inspiration in my own writing. I've learned a lot from him over the years without even realizing it, things I wouldn't have known or even cared about otherwise...

I have to call bullshit on the statement that releasing a HL game at this point wouldn't help or would be irrelevant story-wise. My proof? Deus Ex: HR. What was the run time between the first and second and then HR? Now they've announced a whole slew set in the 'universe' and everyone is happy. Why can't the same be done for Half Life?

I always died reading the Something Awful review of the demo...even now, it's fuckin' hilarious...

JOHN ROMERO: "Alright team, I've got a fabulous idea for a game! I've been listening to what the gamers want and are looking for, and I've got some killer thoughts! This will be the best game ever created!"
ION STORM TEAM: "HOORAY!!!"
JOHN ROMERO: "First of all, we'll need to make our own engine. A superb engine, featuring advanced effects like T&L, dynamic LOD, curved surfaces and-"
POD PEOPLE: "John xyblah grawh rawwwwr!" (translated: "John, you are our bitch now!")
JOHN ROMERO: (shot by evil Pod Peoples' ray gun) "Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!"
ION STORM TEAM: "John, are you okay?"
JOHN ROMERO: (slowly getting up from the ground) "I LIKE BUGS AND FROGS."
ION STORM TEAM: "What?"
JOHN ROMERO: "'SUPERFLY JOHNSON' IS A GOOD NAME FOR A BLACK MAN."
ION STORM TEAM: "We quit."

Later...

ION STORM TEAM: "John, what should we do about health? Should we just stick with the traditional health kits?"
POD PEOPLE: (quietly chanting) "Lame healing fruit... lame healing fruit... lame healing fruit..."
JOHN ROMERO: "WE NEED LAME HEALING FRUIT."
KILLCREEK: "John, I'm really worried about the direction that this project is heading-"
POD PEOPLE: (shoots Killcreek with their Gamma Ray Gun)
KILLCREEK: "I HAVE BREASTS."
JOHN ROMERO: "WE NEED MORE FROGS."
ION STORM TEAM: "We quit."

Good shit...

Well if I can recreate the most awesome battle of Babylon 5 (Severed Dreams) and have a accurate model of the EAS Churchill burning as Captain Hiroshi makes the ultimate sacrifice plowing her ship directly into an attacking Earth Alliance destroyer, then I could die happy. Hell, I STILL get goosebumps when I watch that battle

Major Ryan: "Hiroshi.......HIROSHI!!!!"

THIS! A million times THIS! Yes! I was actually getting a Super Star Destroyer into the Death Star vibe while watching but that might be a little too much for it to handle. Always wished they'd re-do that scene so it didn't look like they just stuck the model in and set it on fire. There is no fire in space, guys! (Well, there's no sound either but I digress) Word on the street is that the guy doing the 'Revisited'-series is totally re-doing the scene, which I'm anxious to see!

P.S. GREAT SIG Rigs, always wanted to tell you!

Thanks! In a series with a million memorable quotes, this was the one that resonated with me the most. Just the pent up frustration of wanting to do something the right way but having it all not work out as he'd planned...I've been there so many times that it just speaks volumes (to me). Plus, Bruce is one of my favorite actors and was pretty much the only one that could have done Sheridan's part, he nailed it in every episode. It's a shame that half the cast is pretty much gone now and JMS has no plans to ever revisit the series any time soon. I understand why (politics) but I still feel a little let down and betrayed when he has all these ideas (like continuing the series on DVD in short stories, like 'Voices In The Dark'/'Lost Tales') and plans drawn out already (apparently a whole fleshed out story involving Garibaldi and Londo) but just isn't willing to do it. Frustrating.

Xbox: Played for 2hours with Half Elf and HAD A FUCKING BLAST! So much fun. I am so impressed with the online portion of this game. I even won a deathmatch round. Pro tip: Host all games AND LET HALF ELF/CPTRANGER DRIVE!

I'm curious why the PS3 typically has all the problems? Not just for GTA5 but in general. I mean look at the clusterfuck that SkyRim was. I don't have it on the PS3 personally, but I read horror story after horror story about it. Now this, Xbox Live integration seems fine, PSN is fucked beyond all reason...WTF, Sony?! WTF, *R?! Anyone try F1 2013? Is it any good? Im especially interested in the driving model, is it accurate enough or is it more like Grid's fun but not really realistic driving model?
I did not buy 2013 but the previous games were different in the driving physics department from Grid.
Especially when you turn all the assists off.
Not sure I will grab 2013, based on that review it sounds like it is pretty much the same game as 2012 was with some minor additions and tweaking.
Might grab it on sale.

I'm looking forward to the Classic Mode more than anything. If they hadn't included that I think they would have gotten quite a bit of flack for just putting (what seems to be) F1 2012 with a '13 on the box and some moar GRAFIX(!!!)...

They're going for a "Legos in space" vibe, but it's not working well. They shouldn't have shown it off yet, it's not ready.

1. The ships don't have enough mass and seem more like plasticky toys than space ships.

2. They don't break apart the way you'd expect.

3. The asteroids are completely static. If a space ship smashes into one, the asteroid should career off into space, unless it's humongous.

On top of that the asteroids in the background don't move at all. None of them. I can imagine that's probably being put off, but if it's the Miner Wars-engine, than why don't they move? I assume they did in the previous title, yes? (I don't know for sure, I didn't play it but it sounds logical) Everything else you said are valid points as well. Hopefully, they realize this and will continue to work on making a game and not just an engine or sandbox in which to play a game...

Ya I mentioned this earlier, once I figured out that you can hold the cinema button and your car auto follows the boat that mission turned into a cake walk... well except you still gotta shoot that one guy and capture the kid.

That's where I was having the problem! I couldn't shoot the son of a bitch to save my life! The driving part I was fine with and I found the cinematic cam the first run through, but I could never hit the damn guy before he threw Franklin off the boat and then I tried it last night expecting to have to do it 20 times and I accidentally shot my gun before I was even ready and by shear coincidence it hit him! The look on my face was probably pretty priceless...

I'm actually surprised as I've spent a ton more time as Franklin than anyone else. Well, I haven't even gotten to Trevor yet, so that may change. I spend so much time just free roaming that I haven't progressed very far in the story itself. I just (FINALLY! By freak coincidence) finished that Father/Son mission...and that's like what? one of the first missions..lol...I thought the whole time before getting the game that I would like Michael the most but I'm finding his people and surroundings very irritating, along with his Strangers and Freaks missions. The first two I can't pass and it pisses me off to no end. I'm sure I'd do it with persistence but it makes me wonder why *R decided to put slightly harder missions as the first, unless it gets much worse from here on out? I did the mission where we first meet 'Stretch' with Franklin and it was ok but the second half of it (the getaway) was infuriating. I had to do that one over like ten times before I got it right. Still Franklin and Lamar make me laugh my ass off. Maybe because I'm not an 'urban hood' and find their conversations funny even when they're supposed to be serious. That crackhead girl, Tanya(?), is ok. She's meant to be annoying as hell so that doesn't bother me and some of things they talk about are pretty funny.

Bottom line Beamer, I think you're just too...smart. I don't mean that in a sarcastic nasty way, but you just seem not to like 'dumb' people that get themselves in 'dumb' situations. You find it obvious and annoying. Nothing wrong with that but I wonder why you think Saints Row is better...I mean, dildo bats? I'm confused...
