Really Volition! I am still waiting for my Freespace 3!

Wow, took longer than I thought for someone to bring up FS3...didn't Volition lose the rights to the Freespace franchise also? So sad they never continued with it. I remember playing the first one's demo when it came out on the PC Gamer Demo CD. I was floored, it was so good and just felt so right! I was always curious why they gave it the name Descent: Freespace for the first one yet it had no tie to the Descent series in any meaningful way (except name). Maybe they'd intended for it to in the beginning and then dropped it? I dunno. All I know was I bought the first one on DAY ONE release, grabbed it's expansion on DAY ONE release and FS2 when the 'GOTY' version was released.

Actually, to be honest, I got FS2: GOTY Edition as a freebie from Interplay for owners of Star Trek: Klingon Academy websites, when their planned PR-blitz that would include all the major KA sites together fell through. As thanks for signing up for the program, we all were allowed to pick one game for free (along with a very snazzy ST: KA t-shirt that I still have in almost brand new condition that I plan to frame at some point). Most picked ST: KA, which didn't come out for another six months, I picked FS2: GOTY Edition and got it nearly right away since it had been out for about a year (this was in 2000). I had planned to buy KA anyway on my own on launch day, which I did, while the ones that had picked it for free waited something like two or three weeks after launch for theirs. I remember a lot of irate people on the official KA board bitching for weeks that they hadn't got it while I was busy playing it and being a smug bastard... Smug

What's with the uptick in "oh noes violent video games!" bullshit going on around this game? Is it just a reflection of all the anti-gamer/self-hating gamer sentiment going on right now?

Excuse me, but don't discount my opinion (or concern) just because you don't agree with it! I'm not going to go into why I think this 'game' has some issues in the way violence is presented - again - but let's just say that while other games that have come out with extreme violence were typically all either stylized (ie. cartoon-ish depiction), done in a tongue-in-cheek or sarcastic way or with 'wink, wink' to it's audience. Games like Manhunt and this one don't present any commentary other than solely killing just to kill. And it's not aliens, demons, monsters, ghosts, gangsters, military, whatever, it's ordinary civilians and local police and it's done in the most realistic way possible for the most shock value possible. To say this won't have some kind of 'effect' (I'm not going to say influence) on it's players is absurd. We all know that even if this got an 'MA' rating (which it probably will), kids are still going to play it. And with the amount of socially isolated, mentally unstable kids out there, it's a recipe for disaster. Children and those with mental issues don't think like normal adults. For you or me, we see the difference. We know what's right and wrong. Apparently, for whatever reason, there are a lot of people lately that don't see the difference or can't. Games like this, that don't have a 'context', a reason for existing, no story other than KILL KILL KILL, are just adding fuel to the fire.

This is MY opinion and only that. By telling me to 'get some balls' or 'stop being a pussy', you're not going to change my mind in the least, so I suggest you don't go that way. I'm not saying you have to think like me or that I'm right but do realize that there are other opinions out there that are markedly different from your own or the popular opinion. That's all I'm saying...

'Hatoful Boyfriend'

I keep seeing that as 'HatEful Boyfriend'....and then think how conveneient that it came out around the same time as Gamer Gate then realize that's not what it says and feel guilty for putting the game down without even knowing what it's really about...This is what GG does to me! Ahhhh! Wreck

It's funny, my daughter played the demo on my PS3 for a while and said it was really good, though she wasn't much of a strategy gamer. I started playing it - a lot. Just the demo though. Finally she walked by and said, 'Why don't you just buy the full version, cheapskate!'... Yup, I guess she got me there. Now I don't have an excuse, I'll definitely be grabbing this...

As for it being a port, I think the worst port in history would have to be Ride To Hell: Retribution. Man, I don't know how the orig....wait... *puts hand to earpiece*...I'm being told that this wasn't a port just the game itself...Oh. My. God...

*cue quick-zoom Doge meme and dun-dun-DUN! sound*

I wonder if that's a new corollary to Godwin's law:

As a thread increases in length, the probability of a comment blaming Obama approaches 1.

No, no, that's GamerGate...or Derek Smart...but we try not to talk about those things lest someone actually come up with a logical argument...

In TIE Fighter I loved sitting right behind capitals ships' engines, where the guns could get you, and slowly whittling down their shields and armor. If my memory serves me correctly I think by XvT they made approaching capital ships quite a bit more dangerous.

Yeah, you had to deal with 'Engine Wash'...which, if you think about it, apart from an SD actually turning around or another one showing up, how didn't the Alliance pick up on the elite skill of 'Squat and Pop'(tm)? Oh, right, it's not real and sitting in a movie theatre watching the Tantive IV make a 180 and sit behind the SD in the beginning of 'A New Hope' instead of getting 'Blasted and Boarded'(tm) would've sunk Lucas' career pretty quick. Got it.

I gave in and bought it, played through 2 sessions... even on easy it seems very easy to get everybody killed/your crystal destroyed. Defenses are needed, but the enemies can also just run the hell past them unless I'm missing something. Also there seems to be no way to close doors?

Yeah, I got it when it entered EA/Beta (whatever they call it - how about 'Before Final Release'?), thinking it was something like 'The Pit' in gameplay or maybe something like Starbound, which I was playing heavily at the time (and getting bored with). Nope on both counts. Was very perplexing gameplay - I gotta drag this thing everywhere I go whilst being assaulted? WTF? What, is this glorified escort missions (which I and about 99% of other gamers hate with a passion)? Suffice to say, I didn't go back to it, but I did grab the soundtrack because that shit is pretty epic...I give this one a PASS for me...*shrugs* YMMV...

My impressions:

-The force feedback is different for my wheel, hard to say if its improved or not at this point.
-The additional torque is noticeable through the throttle, making the cars more sensitive to excess wheel spin and oversteer.
-I haven't heard a car I liked; all engines sound awful.
-You no longer have access to change gear length in the car setup; the transmission tab is completely removed.
-There appears to be no way to adjust anything ERS related, such as harvesting or deployment rates (no more KERS button).
-Game performance is still smooth with no issues.

I miss the F1 2012 days where DRS and KERS could be used at any point of a hot lap, and now there's just DRS available in the designated parts of the track.

Ah, I'm not really sad to see it go, I wasn't a fan of all that bullshit anyway. Just give me an engine, four wheels, some brakes, a couple wings and a steering wheel with gear shifter and away I go! Race That DRS and KERS was for nerds...

Steam on capped broadband = total crap.

I reinstalled x-com enemy unknown the other day, I would've needed a friggin 8 GIGABYTES download to even get started and finish the installation. On a 20 gigs monthly cap its a no go. On GFWL at least the whole game would've been on the disc and no additional download would be necessary.

Indeed, there's another like Prison Architect in style, but from the prisoners side, more of a rogue-like, called The Escapists that just came out as well. I've been putzing around with it and it has definite potential but it's realllly early...

EDIT: When I started there was one video of some dude trying it out from the very first alpha release version and that was it. Now, there's many many more seemingly in just a few weeks...check it out!

hmmm...I own all of them except Ghosts (a huge failure of a game) - and maybe I am getting old as well...as I didn't see ANYTHING in that trailer that would make me want to spend my money on it....

It's not about you getting old, it's about the game (and the whole freakin' franchise) getting old! It's stale, overstayed it's welcome and it needs to be retired. Like Medal of Honor before it and Battlefield to soon follow it, the game is past it's prime, a new coat of makeup for the old twitch whore before being put out to pasture...the problem here is the game itself and the old concepts behind it being reinvented with new buzzwords each time but having the same tired gameplay...

Enough already! Like WW2 shooters, Zombies and RTS's (long ago), the genre is starting to smell like old wank (to quote a semi-well known game critic)...
