Yeah good luck finding one in stock anywhere.

Amazon is saying in stock right now, so if anyone wants one, now's the time to bite.

I need to debate whether I play enough games with joysticks to make it worth the price of 3 full games...
Just get something cheap then. You can always upgrade to something like this when the price is justifiable.
I've felt the same way as you but wanted to give this a try.
If I will feel this way in a few weeks I'll just ebay it or send it back and get a throttle control alone and use my old Logitech joystick.

Problem I've had with my old joystick is not enough buttons.
Elite uses a shit ton of buttons to control everything on top of the 6 axis movement

Also, who makes this X55 HOTAS you guys are talking about?
Saitek

Thank you, sir! (and trevellian too)

*checks amazon*

Holy crap on a cracker, 200 bucks!!!

I've managed to grab one from NCIX. I've checked their website the day they got stock. When I've ordered it they've had 10+ units by the afternoon all sold out.

As far as price it is probably the best bang for your buck in this price range. Similar HOTAS from Thrustmaster the Warthog which is all metal construction etc., $500.
Or you can go cheap and get the Thrustmaster X-flight for $50 which is a pretty good HOTAS for the price but very few buttons

Btw, hows that X55 Spectral? I was going to get it for ED as well but it's still out of stock down under. I even considered getting TM Warthog but it's on a pricey side
I got as far as get it out of the box and connect it to my PC install drivers etc., last night.
Fired up Elite Alpha but 1.1 doesn't work with it. Alpha 4 has a profile for the X55 but I've had no access to it last night.
I am looking forward to give it a test run this weekend in the beta.

The Warthog joystick is amazing but a lot of cash. If the X55 doesn't work out I think I will go back to my trusty Logitech joystick and pick up a CH pro throttle for it.

Edit: Thanks Trevellian that sounds awesome! Can't wait to try it myself!

Besides $150 is nothing compared how much PC upgrades cost if you want something decent.
Like nin said it is a hobby spend what you can afford.
Still PC gaming is a lot cheaper hobby than many other sport activities or hobbies out there.

Do I really need to spell out that I'm not talking about a handful of rabid space game fanboys who'll give their eye teeth for a space game, but the vast majority of "normal" people. I don't know if you guys are multi-millionaires or live at home with your parents but for most of us with real life commitments and debts, then yes $150+ for a game is completely fucking absurd. As was discussed last night, even $60 is considered too much by most these days. Most people aren't even looking at games until they're hitting $30 and under.

I have no problem paying this much. I have a job and mortgage car loans etc, but my job isn't flipping burgers so I can afford this.
Some people have no problem paying thousands to play MMO games for years.

I understand Elite is not for everyone and everyone is welcome to wait until the game comes out and it will be $50 or $30 on sale.
But please accept that there are many different people that spend money on different things that they find important in their life.
I know people that goes to church every Sunday and drop $200 into that hat without a flinch.

Id say 150 bucks for the full game + all the dlc, expansions etc. is not really that much. Especially as its not really for everyone, just the fans and people who want to support the development of the game.
Exactly
I've had no problem paying that $50 for the devs because I think their work is awesome and they deserve the "tip"
Paying that extra $50 for BF Premium was a big fucking mistake I wish I could go back on.

Yeah, I'm getting very close to pulling the trigger. It's not like I don't have 3 million other things to play. but I can't tell you the last time I played a space sim.

edit: Anyone that plays today/tonight, I'd love to hear impressions - thanks!
I am planning to play tonight, but I am sure if you do some search on youtube you will find a bunch of beta vids popping up today.

I did read their dev blog on this topic and it makes sense, but I wonder if this will work out for them or not.
Aside from this cart DLC silliness the rest of the DLCs seems interesting. Especially the helicopter one.
I've always enjoyed flying helis in Arma.
Will have to practice more with my new HOTAS.

Edit:here is the devblog I was talking about

So SM, if I buy in tomorrow, once the new beta goes live, do I still get the expansion?
Of course!
Premium Beta comes with all expansions.
The way I've looked at it if I wait until the game comes out I'd pay $50 for the game plus $50 for the expansions.
If I want in the premium beta and play today it costs me $50 more, and I support an amazing game to be made today.
I threw $50(extra) at games I should have never done.
Frontier well deserve my money, but I understand others who decide to wait or don't have the cash to spend on the game. It is all good.
The game client was just updated this morning so beta is imminent
Today is going to suck at work!

I considered that Thrustmaster HOTAS but I don't like the idea of cheap HOTAS - I went with a mid-range single stick for the same price and I'm pleased with the Mad Catz / Saitek FLY5. Best trim control I've ever used excluding real aircraft.
I'll see how the X-55 works out, people complaining about a bunch of quality issues. If it has problems I will return it and get a CH Products Pro throttle and Flight stick.
Those things last forever, even though they look like utter crap compared to Saitek products.
I was looking at the Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS also, and while it is a really nice controller, I just don't have the spare $500 to spend on that. I am not a hardcore flight sim person I play other games too so spending that kind of money wouldn't be very smart for my usage.

A major update to the netcode? All it needs is more than 10 ticks per second for client updates... heck even 30 would fix most issues.
Nahh man it is way more complicated than that. You have no idea.
Just like the mod tools they did not want to release those for BF3 because they were way too complicated for the community.

I have looked at the DCS games on steam before and they simply just offend me with their prices. 20-50 dollars per plane module? They can eat a big fat one.
I don't think they are that expensive but I know they are not cheap.
I think the bundles that includes a few planes or helicopters are going for $50 individual planes or helicopters are like $15.
It is still not cheap but it is more in line with all the other games that are setup this way like iRacing for example where each car or track costs $12 or so.
DCS is the ultimate sim for planes and helicopters, the amount of detail those guys put into that game is just insane, and no other game comes close to it.

There are other games out there too like X-Flight or IL2-Cliffs of Dover.
Cliffs of Dover apparently is a pretty good game with the mods.
World of Warplanes if you are into pay2win games.

Without yet reading this thread, there's sure to be a bunch of "I told you it was a scam!" comments.

Actually, about 80% of it is about how awesome Elite:Dangerous looks.

I'd have more interest in that game if their ship design wasn't boring as fuck. I don't want to fly a trapazoid wedge through space.

However I need something to try my X-55 Rhino with, it came last week and has just been sitting here. Tried it with IL-2 Sturmovik but it took like 5 fan made patches just to get the damn game to work in a broken state. So that was a failure. I tried Freespace 2 as well, where the stick side worked, but it doesn't recognize the throttle side. So I really don't know what to try it with at the moment.
Not all the ships look like that, only the starter ones, which you can upgrade from quiet quickly anyways. Plus there is no external view during flying so you only see your ships cockpit anyways.

As for the Rhino mine was just delivered and it sits on my desk next to me at work.
Arma uses it as well as all the DSC games. I believe Rise of flight also can be controlled with it.
You can try RoF for free here:
