I'm not sure I totally understand that last sentence (I'm sure it'll make sense later, perhaps after I fully wake up), but I did go to the Command Name tab (assuming that's the right one) and put on in...Thanks!

Kicking off the install now, before work...

When you login to MP your name will not appear in game you will be called backer #xxxx (x-a number )
You have to login to that website I linked and request your commander name what you will be called in game.
They check every single commander name requests manually and assign it to your account so when you login the next time (into multiplayer) you will have your requested commander name as opposed to your backer plate number.
The process will take a few days because like I said they check every single name to make sure nobody registers commander Chris Roberts or something like that

Here is the copy paste info from the forum:
Hi everyone,

As most of you probably know, at the beginning of this week we opened up the facility for all alpha and premium beta players to finally change their commander names, through https://support.orerve.net/. Well today we attempted a batch update of names for the first time, and it turns out a nasty Trumble may have got stuck in the works...

The result of this is that any name requests that have been made through orerve.net this week have sadly been lost, and will need to be resubmitted. We're extremely sorry for the inconvenience caused by this, and will busy ourselves with approving all of your commander names in preparation for the beta!

The process for submitting your commander name is the same as before:

1. Login at: https://support.orerve.net/
2. Navigate to the ‘COMMANDER PROFILE’ tab
3. Enter your desired new commander name in the ‘Request a New Name’ field and press the ‘Request Name Change’ button.
4. If this is approved it will update the commander name at the top of the page.
5. If it is automatically denied a red message will appear above the field, stating the reason for the rejection.
6. If it is manually denied the player will receive an email telling them that their name has been rejected, once the batch update is complete.

If you have any questions feel free to pitch them below, and sorry again!

Hopefully this makes a little more sense

That is a great site. I've been using it for a while now.
You can have it synced with your Steam wishlist and it will e-mail you if a game on your wishlist is on sale anywhere. You can set price range that you are interested in so it will only alert you if a certain game is on sale for your desired price range.
Super useful.

OK, SM, money dropped. Won't get to try it until at least tomorrow night, but I can kick off the DL in the meantime.

I'm thinking the last space game I played was Freelancer...been far too long.

Awesome!
You won't regret it.
Start out with the single player scenarios first, they will ease you into the game and combat.
If you see me online and have any questions feel free to shoot me a msg on steam.
I've been chatting it up with Trevellian also he is in the beta as well.
Check out the official forum, people are really helpful there. Most of them are in their 40s-50s laid back and ready to help you out. There are a lot interesting discussions going on about new features people are requesting to be in the game as well as controller setups and issues with different joysticks etc.
Also go here: https://support.orerve.net/http/user/loginform
login to your account and request your user name, whatever you want to use in game.
Do this before you play the MP because when they reset your user name in game your in game account will also reset so if you've earned money you will loose it.

That should turn around rather quickly, with games like Star Citizen and Elite those new joysticks are flying off the shelves.
Their new X-55 is a big hit, pretty much sold out everywhere as soon as anyone got stock. Including EU distributors.

Good to hear. Thanks Meat. However I do notice that station still has that stupid rectangular opening.
Oh yes that is the iconic docking opening.
Tbh if you are flying a smaller ship like the Sidewinder or Cobra it is not a big deal but with bigger ships like the Lakon Type 9 or the Anaconda it will take some getting used to. Not to mention the cargo you will spill if you smoke your ship on entry or exit the station.
One other thing they've done is you carry chemicals or explosives the small hit to the ship can cause it to explode so those will be extra expensive to carry and trade.

There are just so many things going on for this game I could sit here talk about it for days.
The future looks even more exciting. Planetary landing is one of those things I am really looking forward to.

Edit: here is a size comparison between the ships that are currently in the beta, there will be 20 different ships when the game comes out
From left to right:
Anaconda, Lakon Type 9, Cobra Mk. III, Eagle Mk. II, Sidewinder Mk. I, F63 Condor, navigation beacon, standard canister.

There will be docking computers (not available for us yet) that will help you with docking bigger ships.
Dock an Anaconda is quiet a challenge.

No subscription.
As for advantage, well the Alpha players have advantage over us beta players.
It's the way the cookie crumbles. Same goes for Star Citizen or any games that are released early.
However this game you can play in single player and you can safely ignore the MP all together if you wish.
Not sure I can say the same about SC

Yes NPCs. These areas are for new players to "grind" for cash to have some money to upgrade the ship, buy a new one or invest into some products to trade.
There are areas in the game where players hang out for PVP.

This video sums it up pretty well:

Speaking of interdiction, finally last night I've decided to play some MP as I've played all the single player scenarios and I am pretty good at controlling my ship now.

Jumped into MP spawned at the space station, selected one of the hunting grounds from the list of places to go to and off I went into super cruise. In the middle of nowhere a pirate pulled me out of super cruise and started scanning my cargo. I got pissed and opened fire at him. He was in a Cobra I was in my starter Sidewinder with a single pulse laser. Almost killed him and he ran away with 5% hull left.
Back into super cruise headed for the hunting ground ones again, then I am getting pulled out of SC again. Same fucker.

This went on for 2 more times however the last time he brought friends, one of the pirates was in a Lakon 9 heavy ship. As soon as I saw that I put all power to the engines and boosted away while flipped on charge the hyper drives so I can enter super cruise and gtfo.
Just as they opened fire on me I entered super cruise.
It was pretty exciting!

Finally made it to the hunting grounds and racked up some kills, flying with other players around. Everyone was super nice, not stealing each others kills and stuff. It was surprisingly enjoyable.
Nothing quiet like you and 5 other players shooting the shit out of a pirate Anaconda.
Made enough money to upgrade my guns but I didn't feel like flying back to a station to buy them as I was having too much fun killing pirates.
Maybe I'll do the trip tonight.

Tom wrote on Jun 5, 2014, 08:18:
Hey, after all this time they finally released something, so I felt like sharing my first impressions. Were they overly critical? Yeah probably. That'll tend to happen here on Blue's News. Why is that? Well, we've all been around the block more than a few times. Our standards are shaped by the greatest games in history. WC2 is still my all-time favorite game.

Yes, I know it's an alpha and plays like it. I played the DOOM alpha where you ran around with a bayonet poking imps frozen in space, unable to harm them. Yet it was still utterly amazing. I've released alphas of my own. It takes guts to put something unfinished out there, even when circumstances force you to. They gave it the appropriate disclaimers. People are still going to judge and they know it.

Now, CR's stated goal, which he reminded us of in this AC announcement, is to make the "best damn space sim ever". Well that doesn't happen by accident, and it takes more than money. It takes vision, making the right design decisions, and executing them properly. This alpha is our first glimpse at seeing the results of those things. We really want to know. CR did it before. Can he do it again? Time and again we've seen legendary game developers from the nostalgic past attempt to achieve greatness one more time. We want them to succeed, sometimes ever so desperately. But usually they fail spectacularly, a la Richard Garriott. It's incredibly hard to achieve greatness and then do it again.

Anyway, since Elite: Dangerous is also attempting to be a great space sim, and it's pretty much the only other game in town at this point (LT doesn't really have the same aim and isn't playable yet anyway), the comparisons are inevitable. As I said before, I'm looking forward to seeing what happens with both games. They both have tremendous potential, which is awesome after the utter drought of space sims we've endured.
+1 well said

So it would've been easier (and less time consuming for all of us) to just write:
"It's an alpha version, feels, looks, plays like an alpha version. End of story."
No not really because I wanted to know the details he listed.
If you don't like his post just skip it, what's the problem?
It's his opinion and he took the time to make a detailed post about for anything I appreciate his efforts.

What's the point of your rant? It doesn't help anybody,
I didn't think it was a rant, more like an overview of what the Alpha is like.
It helped me not to worry too much about the download because other than the pretty graphics there is not much else there that I am missing out on.
