What do these include, apart from the aircraft? Is there a Korea map included, era-appropriate units to fight, things like that?
Each DLC description offers all the details about what you are getting. Most of the offer missions, training missions, etc.
Check here

For example:
The UH-1 Iroquois, better known as the Huey, is one of the most iconic helicopters in the world. Indispensable in the Vietnam War, the Huey continues to serve in both military and civilian roles around the globe today. DCS: UH-1H features an updated model of the helicopter armed with rockets, gatling guns, and door gunner machine guns. The simulation offers both extreme realism in its flight and systems modeling as well as a variety of options to reduce the learning curve for new players, including an Easy flight mode. DCS: UH-1H provides multiple player positions, including pilot, co-pilot, and door gunners. A handcrafted storyline campaign is included as well as a number of single missions and a training course.

I want to see them make an F35 sim that's accurate down to the engine start protocols.
Did you guys see that video I posted yesterday about the DCS-A10 start up protocols. It literally was like 20 minutes to get everything started and checked to roll out the run way.
Just insane, these "games" should be used to teach people how to fly these planes.

do I have to log in to any type of server,
As far as I can tell from the Alpha yes you do have to be logged into their servers. The final game can be played completely solo, coop,or vs MP, but the beta will require you to log in.

Was going through my game collection and I came across quite a few BETA CD's. Ya know those things that ya either had to pay the shipping on, or were sent out free, or where ya signed up online and beta'd the game for free?

As cool as the game is looking, even with all the DLC, there is no way I'm paying over 50 bucks for the core game, let alone the game, dlc, and beta access for 150 bucks.
and that is perfectly fine, your money your choice.
It was my choice to pay $150 for this game as opposed to $100 on release day, and I am fine with that.
I think it is good to have a choice.

If I will feel this way in a few weeks I'll just ebay it or send it back and get a throttle control alone and use my old Logitech joystick.

Whenever I need a joystick, I still wheel out my Cyborg 3D Gold that I must have bought around about the turn of the century (just to make it sound extra old :))
Yeah my Logitech joystick is ancient as well but still the best seller on amazon, it is cheap and works great but wanted to see how the X55 is in comparison.

Yeah good luck finding one in stock anywhere.

Amazon is saying in stock right now, so if anyone wants one, now's the time to bite.

I need to debate whether I play enough games with joysticks to make it worth the price of 3 full games...

Possibly an absurd question, but is the game playable/fun with mouse +kb, or is a joystick pretty much necessary?
He is playing this entire video with a mouse and keyboard.

I've tried it, it is doable but you have so much more control over your ship and freedom of movement when you use a joystick or HOTAS.
To answer your question though yes absolutely possible to play with m+kb.

Just get something cheap then. You can always upgrade to something like this when the price is justifiable.
I've felt the same way as you but wanted to give this a try.
If I will feel this way in a few weeks I'll just ebay it or send it back and get a throttle control alone and use my old Logitech joystick.

Problem I've had with my old joystick is not enough buttons.
Elite uses a shit ton of buttons to control everything on top of the 6 axis movement

Also, who makes this X55 HOTAS you guys are talking about?
Saitek

Thank you, sir! (and trevellian too)

*checks amazon*

Holy crap on a cracker, 200 bucks!!!
Yeah good luck finding one in stock anywhere.
I've managed to grab one from NCIX. I've checked their website the day they got stock. When I've ordered it they've had 10+ units by the afternoon all sold out.

As far as price it is probably the best bang for your buck in this price range. Similar HOTAS from Thrustmaster the Warthog which is all metal construction etc., $500.
Or you can go cheap and get the Thrustmaster X-flight for $50 which is a pretty good HOTAS for the price but very few buttons

Btw, hows that X55 Spectral? I was going to get it for ED as well but it's still out of stock down under. I even considered getting TM Warthog but it's on a pricey side
I got as far as get it out of the box and connect it to my PC install drivers etc., last night.
Fired up Elite Alpha but 1.1 doesn't work with it. Alpha 4 has a profile for the X55 but I've had no access to it last night.
I am looking forward to give it a test run this weekend in the beta.

The Warthog joystick is amazing but a lot of cash. If the X55 doesn't work out I think I will go back to my trusty Logitech joystick and pick up a CH pro throttle for it.

Edit: Thanks Trevellian that sounds awesome! Can't wait to try it myself!

Besides $150 is nothing compared how much PC upgrades cost if you want something decent.
Like nin said it is a hobby spend what you can afford.
Still PC gaming is a lot cheaper hobby than many other sport activities or hobbies out there.

Do I really need to spell out that I'm not talking about a handful of rabid space game fanboys who'll give their eye teeth for a space game, but the vast majority of "normal" people. I don't know if you guys are multi-millionaires or live at home with your parents but for most of us with real life commitments and debts, then yes $150+ for a game is completely fucking absurd. As was discussed last night, even $60 is considered too much by most these days. Most people aren't even looking at games until they're hitting $30 and under.

I have no problem paying this much. I have a job and mortgage car loans etc, but my job isn't flipping burgers so I can afford this.
Some people have no problem paying thousands to play MMO games for years.

I understand Elite is not for everyone and everyone is welcome to wait until the game comes out and it will be $50 or $30 on sale.
But please accept that there are many different people that spend money on different things that they find important in their life.
I know people that goes to church every Sunday and drop $200 into that hat without a flinch.

Id say 150 bucks for the full game + all the dlc, expansions etc. is not really that much. Especially as its not really for everyone, just the fans and people who want to support the development of the game.
Exactly
I've had no problem paying that $50 for the devs because I think their work is awesome and they deserve the "tip"
Paying that extra $50 for BF Premium was a big fucking mistake I wish I could go back on.
