I am looking at getting a PS4 for some other games and I might grab this game for it.
I wonder if my G27 steering wheel will work.

Although with the price tag of $69.99 + tax on "next gen" console games here in Canada it makes me think really hard about buying a console at all.

I am a backer of both SC and Elite and to be honest with you I like the way Elite looks a lot more. It runs better on my system too.
Maybe I am just biased but the color scheme the way the ships leave those smoke trails, the visual effects of the heat wents and shield etc just gives me goose bumps.
Not to mention the sound effects and engine sounds, just kicks so much ass.

I think it might be a bit early to count SC out.
At this point SC is not even close to Elite.
By 2016 proposed release I am sure SC will be great but we will be playing the 6th expansion pack for Elite at that point.

My points is not about the single player, its about the ability for it to be online with friends and in a private group, that functionality launched yesterday.

My reply that you quoted and said not the case was regarding someone asking about the MP and if it is like EVE online.

Like I said in the final game not in the beta
http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=2721

How will single player work? Will I need to connect to a server to play?
The galaxy for Elite: Dangerous is a shared universe maintained by a central server. All of the meta data for the galaxy is shared between players. This includes the galaxy itself as well as transient information like economies. The aim here is that a player's actions will influence the development of the galaxy, without necessarily having to play multiplayer.

The other important aspect for us is that we can seed the galaxy with events, often these events will be triggered by player actions. With a living breathing galaxy players can discover new and interesting things long after they have started playing.

Update! The above is the intended single player experience. However it will be possible to have a single player game without connecting to the galaxy server. You won't get the features of the evolving galaxy (although we will investigate minimising those differences) and you probably won't be able to sync between server and non-server (again we'll investigate).

How's the PvP work? Is it 100% voluntary or is it like EVE where you are at risk everywhere, just more risk in certain places (can I be suicide-ganked in a safe area)?
Yep just like EVE
The difference here is that you can play completely offline single player where everyone around you are npc. (in the final game I mean not in the beta)
You will still get ganked though, the npc pirates are pretty good. They will pull you out of supercruise and demand your cargo

They said it's something they hope to implement "later." I don't think it ever got more precise than that.
It is one of the expansions after release.

No the next release "gamma?" will be feature complete.
Beta will have different phases, Alpha had 3, where they will add new features in and get the game ready for release later this year.
Ones the game hits gamma stage there won't be anymore character wipes either.

It is an open world game so no story line. If you do not enjoy taking on missions, mine goods then sell them for profit or trade and figure out trade routes for max profit while fending off pirates, than this game is probably not for you.
Think of it as EVE Online in first person view.

I haven't had much time to play lately, but I am looking forward to get back into it.

So apparently Braben has said that he wants to future proof E:D, iow allow it to be set to levels of visual details that no current machine will even be able to run.

Because... that worked out so well for Crysis? Confused
I am pretty sure he meant that having options available in the game that if you have the horsepower to run it by all means crank them up.
In case of Crysis the game was not optimized so even on the beefiest machines it ran like dog shit.
I can assure you that is not the case with Elite Dangerous. It runs on my 3 yrs old rig with (currently) max details settings flawlessly and silky smooth. Each update improves the frame rate even further even in premium beta state.
Can't wait to see what they have planned for this game in the future

There will also be missions you can take from npcs, but I don't think there will be a scripted story.
This is more of an open sandbox, make your own adventure type game, just like the previous Elite games were.
