No the next release "gamma?" will be feature complete.
Beta will have different phases, Alpha had 3, where they will add new features in and get the game ready for release later this year.
Ones the game hits gamma stage there won't be anymore character wipes either.

It is an open world game so no story line. If you do not enjoy taking on missions, mine goods then sell them for profit or trade and figure out trade routes for max profit while fending off pirates, than this game is probably not for you.
Think of it as EVE Online in first person view.

I haven't had much time to play lately, but I am looking forward to get back into it.

So apparently Braben has said that he wants to future proof E:D, iow allow it to be set to levels of visual details that no current machine will even be able to run.

Because... that worked out so well for Crysis? Confused
I am pretty sure he meant that having options available in the game that if you have the horsepower to run it by all means crank them up.
In case of Crysis the game was not optimized so even on the beefiest machines it ran like dog shit.
I can assure you that is not the case with Elite Dangerous. It runs on my 3 yrs old rig with (currently) max details settings flawlessly and silky smooth. Each update improves the frame rate even further even in premium beta state.
Can't wait to see what they have planned for this game in the future

There will also be missions you can take from npcs, but I don't think there will be a scripted story.
This is more of an open sandbox, make your own adventure type game, just like the previous Elite games were.

I am sure that will sell well.

Did anything worthwhile come out of the last kinect unbundling? I know there were a lot of people making demos of their rooms, etc...

I don't think there was anything worthy came out of the last gen, but hey this V2 can see you junk!

What he's done so far is mightily impressive but it sounds like he could use some help.
Yep, delaying the game by nearly a year strongly suggest that he is in way over his head.
Hope he can pull this off without burning himself out and making that kickstarter money last

Next Gen is a meaningless phrase.
Oh no no no, next gen is a very meaningful phrase my friend.
It means many or all of the things below:

-Day 1 DLC
-Season Pass
-$60 base game
-preorder for "limited edition" (while supplies last)
-low graphical fidelity for the PC port so the "next gen" consoles can run the game at 30fps
-optional mouse and keyboard support
-FOV=55
-quick time (button mashing) action sequences
-press A to start
-always online

I am sure there are plenty more "next-gen" game features in AAA titles these days, but you get the idea.
See Watch Doge from Ubisoft for a recent example of a "next gen" title

Hope he can pull it off, but the closer he gets to completion I think the more and more complex problems he will run into which will take longer time to fix.
His mid 2014 seemed a bit too optimistic for release date anyways.

Thanks for the guides and stuff. I appreciate it guys.
I think I just have to dedicate some time to learn this game and I should be fine.
I did play other 4X games before, Endless Space was one of my favorites.

Civ V is pretty user friendly as is. Was there something getting in the way of you understanding the mechanics, or was it simply a case where you understood the game but just didn't enjoy playing it that much?
It's been a while since I've tried it so I can't really tell you exactly what it was.
One of these days I should fire it up again and see what happens
I've started watching some "let's play" vids on youtube too but most people are so good at this game they click around so fast I have no clue wtf is going on so not really helpful in a "tutorial" way.
