I think he knew what you were referring to. So far the reviews I've seen of DX:IW have been good too. On the other hand until you get the alternatives to the magazine reviews and the bigger website reviews, you haven't really had a real review.

1. Gamespy reviews Nov 27, 2003, 16:36 John Nelson

I was baffled when Gamespy gave Gothic 2 a score of 2 stars (out of 5). A view that was shared by everyone posting on their forum. Now they've given Deus Ex 2 a score of 4 stars. Do the Gamespy reviewers just like dumbed down games?

I was playing S2 last night and tried out the mines for the first time. I had a bunch of the long narrow mines I'd defused from an earlier mission so I fitted a couple to a doorway and waited for an enemy to come out...and waited..and eventually threw a tnt pack at the door instead. Now it happened there were gas bottles in the room to one side of the doorway...I nearly hurt something laughing at the crater that was left.

Did I miss Golden Land when it came out? It looks like a Diablo clone, yesno?
And has anyone heard of Heath: The Unchosen Path?

I just want to add my (considerable) weight to the Silent Storm hype. It really is THAT good. The only thing it lacks is multiplayer and I expect we'll see that in Silent Storm 2 (S2-2?).

Stuff like this reminds me how arbitrary the market for games is. If you liken it to film studios then the Movie Studio is the Publisher. They choose to fund projects based on the pitch. Some projects, obviously, struggle on to get made with next to no budget. A film with a huge budget that does okay may make no money. A film with no budget that does great will sprout nouveau millionaires like crazy. Ultimately the result can't be attributed to how good the film is, how well it was marketed or what the prevaling mood at the time was. It takes all three to coalesce for something special to happen. If 2 out of 3 work then you may have a cult classic on your hands. With films it mainly seems that a studio appreciates that a great deal of investment may have gone into a project before becoming worried. They understand that if they cancel a film they will get nothing back. If they go ahead, with a reduced or controlled budget, then they will incur more costs but may be able to eventually recoup costs, mitigate losses or even make a profit. Games publishers appear to have the benefit of a buyers market. Game studios are getting bought up left right and centre. In quite a few cases the back catalog of games, or licenses held will probably justify the purchase. If you're lucky enough to buy a studio that can still make games then that's just a bonus. No wonder then that games get cancelled in an arbitrary fashion. 9 times out of ten you can still make money by employing east european programmers to turn out the clone, of a rip-off, of an older game anyway. Sadly, it's easier to find programmers these days than film makers. (consider... if most legitimate film-making could be done by pressing buttons and going for pizza, we would probably have a greater choice of great films to watch. (And just as many awful films to watch.)

>Maybe you should tell that to British Telecom so they can pull their broadband advertisements.

Yeah, but this time last year, broadband take-up wasn't statistically significant (look it up). Statistically no-one had broadband. Remember... statistically significant....and once more...look it up... statistically significant...

If Chris Auty is a Brit then maybe you should be bigging it up for a local boy made good instead of defending British Telecom.

I'm 39 years of age and will play video games until the day I die (the way I drink, probably some time this weekend). Radio, Movies and Television have all been accused of corrupting youth, and been embraced by youth in turn because of this. Curiously Radio, Movies and Television actually revolve about a much older audience. Video games are around 40 years old. You might want to re-examine your opinions. Something along the lines of..."You are old, and therefore are the preferred demographic for this game because (a) you pay for it and (b) won't DOS our servers into oblivion if you lose a DM. You may suck but you paid for the development. Cheers. Big hug. ... something like that.

The last survey I looked at put the average age of a PC gamer at 29. That means I'm above average.

<edit> I can spell development but I was confused by some knee ointment...

Buying both. Obviously. Who won't be able to buy both within, say, three months of each other tops? Even if they were released on the same day. In the UK both games will likely carry a 15 age certificate. If you're 15 you've probably got some type of part time job anyway. 15 is virtually an adult anyway so even if you don't have a job you're looking for one and too busy to be playing video games.
Personally I parted company with id with Quake 3. Unreal Tournament came out slightly sooner and I bought it and never looked back. OTOH I broke up with 2 girlfriends over Doom and Quake (re-read that and had to qualify. I didn't have 2 girlfriends at once on both occasions. Anytime I had two girlfriends I wasn't playing games. Duh.) Wolfenstein was the game I introduced my nephew to video games with. "Don't hurt da doogs" he would weep. Pitiful 5 year old wimp.

Funnily enough until last night I was still using ME, on my 2 year old Dell - I have no shame...
Prior to the last couple of months, it seems, there was no penalty for still running a W98 OS. On the other hand, running XP meant jumping through hoops to play some classic games - obviously that wouldn't matter to some people. Unfortunately, recently there have been a number of announcements like this of games which either require XP or have significantly improved performance with XP.

I'm out of the loop...was UT2k3 a piece of crap? I enjoyed it but I made that mistake before. Was it worse than Dragon Blast or Special Enemies 3? Be honest!

News Comments > Rome: Total War Delayed
4. Re: Woa... Oct 11, 2003, 03:07 John Nelson

What really sux is that the BBC's Time Commanders is using a version of Total War for their game show where a group of four people "command" an army against a historical opponent. So far all the shows have either been Romans vs.. or ..vs Romans (or like last night's Pompei vs Julius Caesar, Roman vs Roman). They don't mention Total War in the show at all but Creative Assembly get a credit in the titles. If you can but haven't been watching it, you should. It's not the worst use of games tech on TV and it's also worth seeing the teams fall apart and bicker as their armies get ground up by either the AI or whoever is controlling the other army (unseen). And meanwhile the experts and show host are heaping sarcasm on their efforts. Love it!

Um, amen to that, unfortunately. But yeah, nice move on putting the original H&D out for free. I hope it works as a PR tool but some people just don't want to pay for anything.

I love (L-U-V) the BioWare cD&D stuff but keep feeling shafted by buying early. I usually buy the games within a week of launch..., then comes the special DVD edition or the gold edition with extra content. I know it's my fault for being eager, but why do they have to rub my nose in it?

200,000 downloads and somebody earlier said only half the content servers were on-line. Somebody else says Valve should have paid attention to some of those terrible MMORPG launches. Maybe they did - guinea pig the system at half capacity to see how it copes so they'll have it right for when HL2 launches in around 2 weeks (yeah right.) They're making no money from the HL/CS crowd so it's less of a risk pissing them off than even 100,000 paying customers trying to get HL2 online. Again - they're making no money from the HL/CS crowd - but has anyone looked into their rights as consumers on this? It would be interesting to compare what's on the back of my 5 year old HL disk case with what's on offer now.
