...If someone else doesn't like that your up till 3 am geeking out then F@% em.

The thing is people need to be able to tell those white lies, such as "I have to go do something important" then go have alone time playing a game, without those online seeing that you went to play a game and are ignoring them/everyone.

If any client like this has some sort of friends list and won't let me "hide" or be invisible or disable the "social" features, I won't use it.
Even Steam lets you set yourself as "offline", and you can tell it not to log you into the "friends" system when you load it, and you can set your profile to private so no one can see it. It's like people have never looked in the settings menu.

With an MP game you don't have to spend time and money on creating hours of content, as well as AI. Makes sense for a kickstarter.

There's an SP game called Enemy Starfighter in development. I don't know if it's a story-based game or more of a procedural campaign, but it looks good.

What I'd love is a game with a dynamic campaign, so the missions are always different. Maybe Enemy Starfighter will satisfy that.

This seems like a necessary thing as GOG expands its catalog and sells bigger games. Downloading 20-30 gigs of Witcher 3 would be a pain without a decent client.

Sounds like id's idea was not to charge people for mods, but the company itself would pay mod makers based on how attention their work got. Probably wouldn't pay them very much, but it's something.

Not sure why anyone would have a problem with that. There's some weird expectation among gamers that people should work for free, for some reason. Meanwhile companies like Bethesda are raking in the cash generated partly from the volunteer work of mod makers, and nobody seems to have a problem with that. Kudos to Bethesda for embracing mods in the first place, of course, but there's nothing wrong with the idea of people being compensated for their work.

Maybe if GG weren't hurling torrents of abuse at people there wouldn't be a need for an automated blocklist just a thought.

News Comments > Hatred in June
31. Re: Hatred in June Apr 29, 2015, 18:28 Squirmer

No one here is saying this game will make people killers, it's just really distasteful. And catering to people's hate is ethically questionable if you believe that content creators have social responsibilities. This isn't like GTA or Postal, which might also be distasteful, but also have an absurd and playful tone. This game just revels in, well, hatred.

Just look at the Youtube comments. You've got people calling for the ability to kill Jews, kill children, kill "islamists and homosexuals", kill war veterans, the elderly, pregnant women, people want a Ferguson mod so they can kill black people.

The fact that this game attracts that sort of person is telling. If that's the sort of stuff you want to indulge in...guess it's up to you. But don't get upset when people use this game as an example of how videogames are psychopath simulators. There is no recourse in this case, because that's exactly what it is.

Awesome. Might have to pickup Tie Fighter now that it's been updated. Still, it's a little pricey for an obsolete game.
What makes a game 'obsolete'? These are classics and I've been having a good time playing X-Wing again. Well worth the price.

Disney bought Lucasarts and wants to make the most of their new IP. I don't begrudge them that, especially since Lucasarts/film seemed to be filled with stubborn dickheads for years who refused to make these games available, for no reason. I'm grateful I can play them again now.

I think it's pretty clear at this point that they are projecting to ultimately hit around $100m. It seems like the storage requirements keep going up with the budget, so I'm not sure I can afford the storage when this thing finally launches.

It's very clear, since that's exactly what Roberts has said: http://www.engadget.com/2015/01/21/star-citizen-expected-to-reach-100-million/

You don't organize speeches at the last minute. This was probably organized months ago before all that shit happened. No doubt people would criticize him if he simply backed out of it.

One of the interesting questions is what happens when a modder charges for, say, a Star Wars mod, and Disney hears that Bethesda is profiting from their IP... I'm sure it will be pulled down at some stage, but money will be changing hands before that happens if no one is curating the mod store.

There may well be too many problems with this in practice, but I'm not buying the "unethical" argument. Modders have been value-adding to games forever. Skyrim is getting close to 4 years old and it still sells well, in large part because of mods. There's an ethical question there because Bethesda is directly benefiting from free labor provided by modders. Usually no one questions this because it's just how it's always been.

Leaving aside the practical problems for a moment, it's not "unethical" for modders to get paid for their labor. Just the opposite.

That said, all the problems are real. A better approach might have been to suggest donation amounts (like what happens with some browser extensions), and curate mods a little bit, so the more expansive ones could be put up for sale, but not everything.

29. Re: Mad Max Trailer Apr 23, 2015, 20:00 Squirmer

This looks good. The only thing I'm worried about is that the "open world" will be littered with trivial side activities and collectibles (like basically every open world game ever). Just Cause 2 was fine in this regard because it was so crazy and fun at every moment, but if Mad Max has a more serious tone without that craziness, all those trivial activities could get dull.

Not sure a platformer is the kind of game you'd want to play in early access. Recipe for frustration.

A lot of people don't use the "ghost" term correctly though. Some people think if you go through knocking out everyone you've "ghosted" the game. So it depends what exactly he means.
