I find this amusing. Lots of people in this country and on this forum would bash a country like France, but you want to know something? Go to France and ask anyone about this issue, and they will start to laugh. This IS NOT important. And it certainly isn't worth the time and tax payer dollars that the FTC [and others] are going to spend on it.

I understand and respect your opinion and realize that other people may not have had the same rosy experience I have with Steam.

The irony is that everything you say is relatively well thought out, clear and concise. I just can't reconcile what you say and your opinion of Steam with my own experience and that of others I know.

It's just not so terrible to me. Apologies if I vented in an immature way earlier.

Oh my GOD. Give up the FUD about steam. You're like one of those people who can't give up on the idea that the world is flat.

How pathetic is this, you have to defend your way of going out to a nerdy computer store, paying for a wasteful paper box and a stupid CD rom. Meanwhile other people like myself have been enjoying steam and the GAME, understanding that I can have it either way.

What is your problem with understanding that both methods are okay?

Steam just happens to be something that is popular to bash. If it was called something else, and was made by Blizzard or someone, everyone would be fucking worshipping it.

And you know why? Because Steam is a fucking cool idea that works really well. And if you think it doesn't, you have your head up your ass.

I was a Tribes 1 "veteran", and I enjoy tribes Vengeance a lot. It DOES have a lot of neat features removed [mortar laser sighting, etc], but none of these features "ruin" the game and its unique jet-packing, fast paced experience is still extremely satisfying.

Sure, its steamlined, and you may not play it for as long a period as tribes 1, and there are some annoying gameplay decisions [laser sniper rifle should not have 10 rounds of ammo, imho], but these hardly detract from the unique gameplay that this game still has.

Frankly, I think this game suffers from a) not enough marketing vs. the higher profile titles, b) a snobby, elitist fanbase [puts flamesuit on] and c) a lot of people who were turned off by possibly one of the worst game launches ever [tribes 2].

I hope this patch comes out, and people give this game the chance it deserves. It is a fun, fast paced game with jet-packing madness, and it's great to have a graphically up-to-date game that takes over from something like quake 3 etc, that you can jump into and have 15 mins to an hour+ of fun any time you like.

What's missing? Some of the more advanced features could EASILY be put into the game via mods. And players. Where the hell is everyone. Oh, and it could use a few more damn levels. Other than that, I would definitely urge anyone looking for a fun multiplayer experience [I consider the single player campaign "gravy"] to give this game the attention it deserves.

Also- Cher will be adding her musical touch to the soundtrack, a techno remix of her "If I Could Turn Back Time" will be the main song for the game...

EA can't die soon enough as far as I'm concerned.

Agreed, but apparently if they can spend $300+ million on an exclusive NFL license, then have the nerve to try it with the NBA as well...

Someone is going to have to rob them, from the INSIDE...Enron style...

You know, this is one of the few games convincing me that my 512mb of Ram isnt enough.

I get a lot of slowdown when I host internet games. No matter how small the game is, and the person is connecting to me from next door [apartments], the game eventually slows down to 2-5 frames per second. It may take about 10 mins, but eventually it just chugs. We've tried everything from avoiding using any Fire attacks etc, but I think perhaps it's just my system not having enough memory?

At any rate, I like the game enough to upgrade and see if it will help, which is more than I can say for the latest FPS games.

So, has anyone else had this "gradual slowdown" bug in multi-player?

I should say one more thing-
I notice grouping bugs in multi-player as well. Sometimes grouped units do not respond to a run command, you have to select perhaps half the amount and then hit run on them, or even worse, select individual unit groups. The other bug I noticed was that grouped units sometimes "invisibly" group with other units. I select group 1, tell them to go somewhere , and other units not inside that grouping go instead. Annoying to say the least....thankfully its not all that common.

So- Gradual slowdowns, Grouping/pathing problems, and the poor multiplayer lobby. Those are my requests for the patch! :p

My point was no matter WHAT console you make it for, it will still feel very consoled and fucked up as you will for hte PC.

Okay, point understood.

I was only trying to point out that the totally divergent [sorry for being a wordsmith here] and much older platform of the ps2 is a much bigger problem than the Xbox. The problem [I repeat] is developer hastle. Playstation 2 ports / parallel development is a much bigger problem for modern games than Xbox ports- end of story!

Hope it doesn't include a colonoscopy, those are no fun.

Thanks for coming back online mister Blue.

I've been visiting your site since the days of Zanshins GL Dojo, Redwood's page, Scary's "Shuga Shack", and countless others that have either gone by the wayside or been absorbed into some big corp.

You are still doing it the old fashioned [read: The best] way. We all lova ya for it

Of course you havnt seen how good Killzone looks, but I got one up on ya, if this game is to be made for ANY console, they hafta cut ATON of graphics options than that of a PC.

I have a problem with this statement.

With the Xbox architecture, all you cut down on are memory management routines [must be more efficient], ragdoll effects [again, tweakable so that ragdolls dont interact as much], the source art is scaled down to meet the [low] texture memory of the GPU, and the polygon counts are cut down in many cases for less CPU usage.

On the playstation 2, you have a totally different architecture from the PC and Xbox. In addition to being older, slower, and harder to code for- you have a totally different codebase period. That is what fucks things up for PC games that are also released on the PS2. Developer hastle.

If you are lucky, you get a separate developer to port the game over to PS2 and "deal with it", but in reality, they usually have the same developer [different wing] doing all 3 versions. Thats the problem here. Not the fact that the PS2 can't handle all these advances that we wan't, but that the DEVELOPER DOES NOT HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO CREATE TWO VASTLY DIFFERENT VERSIONS OF THEIR GAME ON A PUBLISHERS DEADLINE AND BUDGET CONSTRAINTS.

THAT cuts into the maximum quality of the PC versions, and keeps them looking "this generation" instead of "next generation" like they should be looking by now. It's not that they can't make two different versions.

Of course, Xbox 2 will help this by coming out this year [2005], but guess what- its going to be a problem AGAIN because the playstation 3 will not be out until 2006. So, the big publishers have two choices. Cut out the PS2 entirely [never going to happen] OR make obviously scaled down versions of their next-gen games for the playstation 2 [most sensible, but bad press for Sony], OR , [the most likely option IMHO], continue to hinder the progress [at least graphics, physics & A.I. but really what else is there] of new title development to keep in pace with what featureset the PS2 can cope with.

And thats the hard truth.

[disclaimer- if said out-of-date console was the Xbox, i'd bash it instead, don't call me an Xbox fanboy]

The history continues. A game of epic proportions. Colored units of exact or simularly strong units attack eachother & don the colors of the standard 16 color crayola crayon box. Be afraid, be very afraid....

Careful...you may have given another VP at EA a promotion when he steals your tag line
