Great post FourPak, you're absolutely right about the atmosphere - some of the "unique" areas are particularly stunning, like the sanctuaries and some of the dungeons. The first of these sanctuaries, at a small forest lake was literally jaw dropping - I don't think I've seen this done quite as well in any game, ever. Maybe some of the best areas in BG2 come close.
Oh and another thing: seamless worlds rock.

...that makes the game fun? I'm sure somebody was gonna post that. Actually, the game already is a load of fun without the patch, especially in multiplayer. I hated DS1 after the initial awe slipped, but DS2 is just great.

Firaxis will spend the next month finishing the single-player game, and we've learned that some other features will be finished after the game is released. Specifically, the multiplayer pit boss, which will allow persistent multiplayer games of Civ IV, will be released in December. |

I don't know, I use the light class with a stealth implant pretty much all the time, with some success. And I have a feeling that a lot of my opponents have the infrared (or whatever) implant that counters stealth when active - I certainly pick it up with every load-out.
The map does grow increasingly linear towards the end, while there are three routes to the first objective. Never really bothered me, in fact I was grateful when playing as a defender - it's a tough enough job already without attackers coming from many different directions. Although I guess that with the final objective, stealth isn't very useful anymore as an attacker or defender, I typically switch to either medic or heavy at that point.

Next up on the teams radar are additional maps for the "demo" (I think it's a horrible mistake to call it that way). I don't mind the current map at all, though, no idea why you'd consider it lame.

Actually, they're probably doing this to prevent the game from being available to us Europeans as a pirate release one week before we can buy it in the stores. Of course if it leaks, the whole effort is for nothing.

Hope they don't dumb it down too much. All bladed weapons one skill? Man I want another 3.5 edition ADnD CRPG.

MMORPGs typically don't use "tons" of bandwidth. Listening to online radio uses up more. I doubt the bandwidth figure is a major factor compared to hardware upkeep and support personnel costs.

So all graphical elements will route through DirectX.
Maybe, but I'd assume that this rendering path will be abstracted away from application developers, including those developing their own custom controls... My assumption may be wrong, though, I don't keep up with Vista news (plenty of time to do that once its closer to release). FWIW Mac OS X already has a hardware rendering path, but developers didn't suddenly start writing their controls in OpenGL. Neither do Gnome developers using Cairo. Riley, that's not only moronic from a business standpoint but infeasable, as they'd have to start licenses for all software.
I'm sure they won't do it, but why do you think they would need to start taking money for all software? First of all, they can't just start requiring money for a license for Win32 development - there is no need to license anything to develop software for Windows. But I guess it's conceivable for them to take money for something like the next version of DirectX, on a per-user level. Since apparently the support for "legacy" DirectX will be somewhat limited in Longhorn Vista, and there is pretty much no alternative to DirectX, graphics layer aside, this would be a pretty dire offer. And it would neatly avoid taking money from all application developers.

Heh. My first thought when reading the game's name was that it would make for a nice (dumb, actually) pun in German - Beton is German for concrete. Then I saw that the developers are German, and this might actually intended. On the other hand, B.O. Soldier is nice, too.
