2. 'Tis Holy indeed! May 10, 2005, 23:59 UnderLord

I was wrong (that hurt, bit my tongue!)
I was misled by that darned NewEgg ad' right under the heading.
I wonder if dual cores *really* gives performance justifying the '+' numbering scheme in practice though.
I guess we'd have to compare with a Tomshardware liquid-nitrogen cooled 4800 Intel CPU to be sure.

Missing on the main page for me too.
I'm running fully-patched IE on XP Pro' if anybody wants to try and identify the cause.
I tried cache-invalidate refresh (Ctrl-F5), still missing.

I can't remember the proper protocol for replying to the ("...") quotes.
Still, I see we still have exactly the same "Official looking text" in the source after the recovery (shame ;-), and how long has it been since "The teeny tiny print"?

2. I'm with MacD - US Patents Suck! Apr 7, 2005, 15:19 UnderLord

Hey look, you can get a patent for something you can envisage you might be able to do one day, not a single experiment or proof it can be done is required!
At least the perpetual motion nutters in former days actually had to turn up with something that seemed to nearly work.
This is just ridiculous beyond words, and definitely doesn’t warrant being dignified with the word ‘invention’.
Any lingering doubts that the patent system like most US institutions is totally owned by big business must be dissolving by now.
I think I’ll have to patent the transporter right now, after all, quantum entanglement on a large scale might be able to do it one day…

Of course, point # 2 might not matter if the hosting site is close to Blues home, because Blues wouldn't be Blues without Blue!
(Too obvious, right?)

74. Not a disaster if you learn from it Apr 6, 2005, 03:39 UnderLord

I just hope that the first thing you did was make an easily retoreable full backup.
Second must-do thing would be a hot standby in another part of the world, we've seen plenty of proof that disasters, man-made and natural, can occur anywhere, next time could be worse!

69. Sloppy code Feb 8, 2005, 16:28 UnderLord

The whole practice of downloading to temp' and then moving.copying to the required destination is just slack programming (speaking as a programmer of 35 years experience).
As Blue says, Getright is much smarter and actually downloads to the target drive/directory, especially useful if you run with a small system partition for easy system restores. For the same reason, I ditched WinZip for ZipZag ( www.zipzag.com ) which also unpacks RAR files that WinRAR declares broken and handles the superior bz2 format.

59. AVG *and* Beagle 2 Feb 4, 2005, 16:39 UnderLord

For the last week AVG has been taking forever to download updates, here in Australia, I think it has passed that problem now though.

Beagle 2 wouldn't have been an add-on to anybody's space program if the Uncle-Sams-ass-kissing U.K. politicians hadn't killed our Blue Streak rocketry program.
As it was, we were lucky Rolls Royce salvaged enought Tech' out of the similarly fated TSR2 fighter plane program to build the Concord.
Very easy for politicians to point the finger as to root causes of problems so long as there aren't too many folk with long memories (40+ years ago)!

3. Re 50GB Jan 4, 2005, 22:21 UnderLord

Yes indeed, 50GB on the initial 2 layer disk.
Supposedly scaleable to 200GB on 8 layers (after 2007).

Of course, by then my server HDD will be >>400GB :-(
I hate swapping backup media!

1. Philips Unveils DVD Burner That Plays CD Jan 4, 2005, 18:29 UnderLord

Not a very good article title, it turns out in fact that Philips are shipping a Blu-Ray burner at least half a year earlier than expected.
Being demoed at CES this week!
If the HD-DVD group aren't ready, this probably makes the article "The DVD war" moot!

However, going by www.graphics.tomshardware.com you get linked back to a Toms Hardware news story - http://www.tomshardware.com/hardnews/20041011_101919.html
which links to a review -
http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/article/1744/
So I guess they're having an each-way bet!
