29. I choose PC Sep 4, 2007, 17:00 UnderLord

From my observation, the enjoyment of a console-owner is lower than that of a PC owner.
There is the release of the console, invariably without half the promised titles, then they come in over the next 6 months, new half-decent games come in for maybe a year after that, then it is a long wait with few good games until the next console release.
Meanwhile the PC is looking good for those last couple of years, so maybe we would get a different answer from the console owners if we wait a bit.
Now I am self-employed, I use my PC 90% for work (sad, I know) and it has been really hard to justify upgrading that PC that WAS high-end when I worked for the man and bought it mainly for gaming.
After all, when it cross-compiles my whole embedded ARM application in 7 seconds, you tend to forget that it IS 5 years old!
Anyway, Bioshock has finally done it for me, I'm upgrading my 512MB, 20GB, AMD 1700+ Geforce 3, 17" CRT PC (wince) and staying with my usual plan of building a good but sub-maximum PC, 2GB, 500GB, 6600 quad-core, 8800GTS 640MB, 22" 1680x1050.
The thing is, I am getting all this (built for me, you don't get a 2 year warranty building it yourself!) for around Aus $3,000 when the old PC cost Aus $4,000 5 years ago.
Has anybody noticed the price of consoles coming down with each release?
I wouldn't be surprised if the coming Nvidia cards look mighty tempting within a year, but for the most part I hope to get 3 years service from it, and a fairly steady flow of great games, not a bunch of great ones near the start of the PCs life.
(The fact I started working from home to bring up my teenage son who my ex' sent to me, and so I had to buy 2 of these rigs kind of toned down my aspirations (SLI etc'), but I'm not about to let a teenage boy loose on the internet on my work PC!)

Edited for typo's and a bit of clarification

Congratulations Mr Scott, you have discovered the 'MP3 effect'.
People value access and portability more than quality.
Sux to be an artist with high standards, eh?

They should be placed alphabetically, then we'd know where to find the Elbonian Embassy.

I must say, as an Australian, I am ashamed that PCTools called Zango 'Spyware'.
Mostly we call that kind of crap 'Shiteware' or 'Scumware'.

1. London police being idiots Aug 23, 2007, 19:12 UnderLord

If you left stuff unsupervised outside you house all the time, it would be a reasonable supposition that you wanted people to help themselves.
That's what happens in Aus' when you have usable stuff you no longer need or want.
The cops should be giving the idiot with the unsecured WiFi the ear-bashing and order to get it fixed!

2. Multiple core CPUs Aug 21, 2007, 16:14 UnderLord

Of course, for the Brit's it is all ancient history.
We had the Inmos Transputer back in the 80's, a CPU designed to be tightly linked to adjacent CPUs.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transputer
It's is only that with modern processes and transistor counts it is now possible to put a bunch of CPUs on one chip.

Perjhaps they missed what happened to Rambus when they participated in the JEDEC RAM spec' but 'forgot' to mention they had patents on some technologies?
No sympathy whatsoever!

Whilst I WAS joking, I think it could actually work!
This guy, sadly, has thrown in the towel - http://www.gamemusicjukebox.com/
Pity, because I used to get games soundtracks there, so I know gamers buy soundtracks.
Maybe he'll sell his catalogue to Valve for a reasonable price?

(And MySpace!)
So how about a music download service too, so that you can listen to something other than the original game music whilst playing? ;-)

1. Rambus Story Aug 6, 2007, 22:51 UnderLord

Sorry, but I can see bugger-all technical in that story.
It has been happening a lot in 'Tech Bits' recently.
Could I respectfully suggest a new section title 'Mis-Steps' or something for things that don't quite make the 'Legal Briefs' section so that the technically inclined don't end up reading non-technical column filler like this?

There are tons of Doom / Doom II levels available for free too, once you have the base iWads.
I often take Doomsday for a spin and pick up new levels at the recently rescued http://www.doomwadstation.com/
Yes there are STILL new levels being made!
Another good port is Risen3D, back after a little kerfuffle - http://risen3d.newdoom.com/
The levels from Sitters are excellent work, have a look here for some beaut screenshots - http://www.md2.sitters-electronics.nl/mapping1.html

But when I saw the racing buggies drifting around corners in all that red dirt, I couldn't help but think it would be a great engine for an updated version of Powerslide :-)
