Yeah, I don't get where Diablo 3 has been "consolized," that claim is a pretty long stretch.

Though isometric ARPGs have worked on consoles before, D&D: Heroes for the original Xbox was a blast, especially 4 player coop.

Judge yourself: leaked item shop screenshots

In my opinion, some of these items aren't vanity and should be in the game itself. I hope they'll add an ignore option for those megaphone broadcasts.

None of those items, to me, look like they would give the player any performance advantage over anyone else. Most of them are just convenience, or quality of life items, not necessary or advantageous at all for gameplay (the Perfect Salvage Kit might be debatable, but still not necessary).

I just got an e-mail from Newegg taking orders for 680s... I can't afford it at the moment, but it's really, really tempting.

The $3 million for Tim's game isn't anywhere even approaching CLOSE to being enough for an AAA multiplatform title. Its not even enough for the marketing of such a game.

That brings up a good point as well. I hadn't seen figures in a while so I just looked it up, and the figure I saw was an average $18-28 million for a multiplatform title, and $10 million for a single platform title Source link.

So, how much of that goes into marketing and nothing else? Crowdsourcing has the benefit of cutting out marketing, moving on name recognition and word of mouth alone, which I'm sure would shave millions off that $18-28 million figure.

As I said before, it will be really interesting to follow the development of these games. There are still lots of questions and unknowns about how it will work out, but I can't wait to see where Schafer and Fargo are able to take this.

Fargo really dislikes publishers and I for one think he's right, publishers are quickly on the way out.

I dislike publishers just as much as anyone but I don't think they're going anywhere. Crowdsourcing is fine for low-budget projects but it's not going to be enough for anything that requires high production values. You're never going to see anything like Skyrim, Mass Effect, Fallout: New Vegas, Batman: Arkham City, Deus Ex, Thief, Saints Row, GTA, etc, funded by crowdsourcing alone.

Plus, how many AAA games have been made through crowdsourcing as of now? We don't yet know what happens when a game goes over budget, or if they run out of development time, or the developers lose interest and leave the team (creating vaporware). Essentially, how are supporters compensated when a title can't be finished for whatever reason?

It sounds like a great idea, crowdsourced games that gamers actually want, and I sincerely hope it catches on, but we really have yet to see if it is a viable business model for a AAA title.

You guys are clearly insane. FS was obviously the better series. I mean, how can you even begin to think that WC came close? Guffaw, at least FS was so good that Hollywood didn't feel the need to make a shitty movie about it starring Freddie Prinze Jr. and Matthew Lillard.

I mean, look, FS was so much better than Wing Commander that they're using the modified FS2 engine to make a Wing Commander game. If that doesn't convince you I don't know what will.

Of course I'm only poking fun.
But seriously, Freespace > Wing Commander

Looks nice! While obviously not cutting edge by today's standards, the freespace engine still holds up well.
Ever since the source code for FS2's engine was released there have been a lot of updates to it. Some of the newer mods have full post-processing effect support and advanced lighting. Just search around Youtube for what the Blue Planet guys are working on, it looks almost as good as some current tech.

LittleMe, it's the same shit it's always been. You don't get rich if you don't know how to fuck over the poor. And you damn sure can't do it if you care about humanity. And most of the rich are pychopaths in the clinical sense. They just don't give a shit. Sure, there are some people who get rich who are still good people, but assholes like Romney who like to fire people because they can are the people running things. It reminds me of that line from MI3...

You can tell a lot about a persons character by how they treat people they don't have to treat well.

Same way as I know a lot of rich people, good and bad. Most of them aren't them good. Oh, they're not outright evil, but I'd neve count on them for anything. They're the same sort of people who wouldn't piss on you if you were on fire.

That and the fact that the reality is - as you know - most people really just aren't that bright and/or are too lazy to give a shit. So long as they have a roof over their heads, 3 squares a day, they're not going to make waves. They don't know or care that they could have a better life. I'm always torn between anger and amusement about how many Americans have been brainwashed into thinking socialism is bad when that's what really made America great. When the people started finally getting theirs after decades of fighting for it, it's when America took off. Now that they're losing it we're going back to the bad old days. Not long now before we see public education and child labour laws repealed. Yes, it's so much better to keep the masses down and ignorant. In fact it's necessary to maintain wealth and control.

Not to be nitpicky or anything, but America took off because for a few decades we were all there was (from '45 to about '85). Some people just don't realize the devastating effect that WW2 had on European, Russian, and Asian infrastructure and societies. It took them decades to rebuild. It's not hard to be the winner when you are the only one playing.

D3 is going to require online play, and they're doing it to make money and to try to prevent cheats/dupes/ect. it seems like in here you have to believe one or the other, and believe it vehemently at that. can anyone really blame Blizzard for wanting to make money? the only reason anyone starts a business is to make money. and some of their arguments in regards to requiring BNet play do make sense. of course they're not going to come out and say "we're doing it to make money", because it would be unprofessional.

i'm self-employed, and i tell all of my clients that i started my business because i wanted to help people, which is 100% true. but i obviously also want to make money. i don't need to say it, it's just a fact they we both (my clients and i) understand without saying it.

why do people have to become so angry when a business tries to find new ways to make money? and why do they feel the need to try and convince everyone else to come around to their way of thinking?

as for me, i'm eagerly awaiting the game and will glady pay $100 for the CE. i wish the game didn't require a BNet connection, but it does so i'll just have to live with it. all the complaining in the world isn't going to change anything. i lived with it on StarCraft 2, and yes, it was annoying when the servers were down when I wanted to play, but i managed to survive.

i don't see why all of this is such a big deal.

I agree. I am opening a video game store because I want to make money, and I don't want to do it working for anyone else anymore. But, I also give more for used games - and resell them for less - than Gamestop. Half of that is because I think it sucks that Gamestop gives you $15 for a new release you bought 2 days ago and then sells it for $55 used, but the other half is because I think that in the long run my ratio will make me more money because of repeat business and stealing customers from Gamestop.

I don't think anything businesses do is entirely altruistic, but for the most part it's not always evil either.

Will Blizzard make more money from the way they set up DIII? Possibly. Will it cut down on the aggravation of playing with cheaters? Possibly.

Will it incite riots on the intertubes? MOST DEFINITELY.

Does your storefront actually stock PC games? Last time I went to a Gamestop (about 6 weeks ago) the PC section was in a small corner in the back of the store... I don't think it was even lit. Even though I buy most of my PC games digitally these days, I'd kill to have a nice quaint video game store to visit for those games that I do buy boxes for.

Anyway, if their intention from the beginning was to include a real money auction house and an integrated SP/MP experience (for those without the beta that don't know, you can convert your SP game into an MP game at any time), then it follows logically that they would do everything possible to control dupers and item hackers, which then leads to always online DRM. Following that line of thinking all of their choices make sense. I don't fully support it, I've had issues with it in the beta (response/lag issues, which hopefully are just because it is beta), but it is a good game regardless.

Do you have evidence to back this? A link, article?

I'd be interested to see why a complete OFFLINE mode character messed up B.Net.

Well, a link on that might be a mite tough to dig up (I can't find one, anyway), but at least explain to me how a completely offline mode can in some way negatively affect the online multiplayer game. I'm not seeing it.

I think when most people make a claim like that it was because it was in OPEN B.net, where you could convert your SP characters into MP characters. This made Open B.net for Diablo 2 full of duped and hacked items. Some people just forget that there were two MP modes for Diablo 2, and that most people played on Open rather than Ladder (closed). Open was Blizzard's way of appeasing the dupers/item hackers from Diablo 1, just giving them their own multiplayer playground.

I played Diablo 2 Ladder almost exclusively, and duping was very rare, and they usually got squashed pretty quickly. Though, that is still no justification for online singleplayer.

$150? ... guess I'll have to settle for just the digital deluxe.

Also, am I the only one that noticed the similarity between the graphic on https://buy.guildwars2.com/ and the Ned Stark meme? http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/imminent-ned-brace-yourselves-x-is-coming

The GW2 twitter linked a pic yesterday (I think) of a comparison someone made. So no, you aren't the only one.

Heh, yeah I just saw that, but the original GW2 graphic didn't say, "Brace Yourselves." Guessing they added it once someone pointed out the similarity. I approve.

It looks like Ivy Bridge is targeted more toward the mobile market anyway. Lower power consumption, integrated graphics. It just can't compete with a 6 core SB-E, which I'll be going with for my upgrade this summer. I'm due for a new laptop sometime soon though, and I'll definitely be looking at IB for that.

Sadly, the tactical shooter kickstart I had high hopes for seems dead as a merf. It's only a tad over 10% of its goal with 22 only days left - not very promising at this point. I guess the creator's lack of an impressive resume really hurt.

I think that's what did it also, but looking through the updates he has picked up quite a few devs that do have impressive resumes, including Rogue Spear and Desert Siege. Hopefully that bit of info will bring in some more donation.

If I had $10k I'd totally spring for that engraved 92FS.

Can you elaborate on what you're referring to? Blizzard has delayed 'major' features in every single game (and expansion) they've released since D2 (and likely every other game before that, including lost vikings ; ).

That's just it - they are not leaving this as a "when it's done"-type thing; from the sound of it, they are releasing the game in sort of a "piecemeal" fashion to at least get the "finished" part out the door*. In the past they shipped a full, feature-complete product at a time of their choosing. Who knows, this may be an improvement - Blizzard games always have taken an aggravatingly long time to come out. This might be a good choice for them.

* I suppose one could make a case that splitting the Starcraft 2 campaign into 3 parts was another instance of this, so maybe it isn't exactly the first time.

But at least with SC2 that one part was massive, as big as most other single player RTS games.
