News Comments > Ground Control II Demo
6. Re: This sucks May 24, 2004, 15:30 Xymph

The press release is worded somewhat confusingly, but this really is just a premiere like GameSpot always does, with no exclusive restrictions for other sites. The demo just won't be available on the official site until May 27. So the 3D Gamers mirror is here:

Publisher Digital Jesters clarified this is remnant from the press preview which obviously had to be copy-protected, but there's going to be a fully English demo soon which should no longer use it.

Posted the movies (in wmv format) a couple of days ago here
Irrelevant news actually, due to excessive watermarking and splash screens, quality loss in the WMV conversion and, consequently, very slow downloads due to the lack of mirrors.

3D Gamers currently doesn't use cookies, and while the firewall blocks a lot of things, it should certainly allow all web traffic. So I don't know what else could be the problem for you, apart from particularly bad routing.

Well, I was looking at my FR page and thinking that the 97k was too much and might slow some people down. The front page of 3dgamers.com is almost 400k... that might explain it for users with extenuating circumstances.
But then again, our frontpage isn't linked in the news story, so why would he try to access it?

...or has 3D Gamers gotten slower and slower these last few weeks...? I don't mean transfer speeds, I torrent. I mean the site itself.
By nature of my work on the site, I browse it all the time, and it runs at the same good speed as always. We have plenty of bandwidth for it (contrary to the mirrors, never enough there... sigh :)) so the only thing I can think of is poor routing between the server and your computer. Try some traceroutes to see if there are any bad hops, and if you feel like posting your IP to our feedback page, I'll be happy to run a trace from the server to you as well.

Does 3D Gamers not post .torrents anymore?
Sure do, we have over 60 torrents running. But a torrent only makes sense for popular and larger files, and this movie is rather small and not very interesting (IMO), so it's just as well served from our regular mirrors (to which I added the fast Utah link now though). If it turns out to be really popular after all, I can always add a torrent as yet.

The 3D Gamers download is also based on this post, bundling the files and info there into one file. And it appears this single file was in turn mirrored to places like GameSpot, IGN and FilePlanet.

Icculus (Ryan Gordon, the guy doing the ports) said Linux and OSX demos should become available within a few hours of the Win32 release.

12. Re: just an opinion... Jan 23, 2004, 18:21 Xymph

Yes, this is about the German release being delayed due to "business technical reasons". In fact, now that I look at it, the French and US/UK releases seem unchanged at February 6 and 14, respectively:

So I guess I put Blue on the wrong foot there... sorry.

Thanks! 3D Gamers wouldn't exist without my partners in crime John and Kapi.
Even though I have broadband, when a new demo like this comes out, the servers can get bogged down pretty hard, and knocking off that 40 megs of the stupid DriectX installer can help a lot! I wish more people would do this, freakiní wasting bandwidth and time!
Yes, while I can somewhat understand that publishers release cover-mounted demos with DX, it makes no sense online. I always try to remove it if it happens to be included, and I don't know why other sites don't do it more often either, because the bandwidth savings cut both ways: suppose we deliver 10,000 copies of the demo over the next few weeks, then it saves our download servers 320 GB in traffic.

John wrote:
Yeah, I'm also greatful that the people at 3D Gamers take out the DX9 installer, but it increases the traffic too. Since it's a smaller file, many more people want to download from them. That's why it would be best for other sites to do the same.
That seems to be true, it rarely has been this busy, and it does contribute to the initial slowness of our Torrent as there are way more people downloading than are seeding, unfortunately. It should speed up by this evening though.

Well, I visit the frontpage regularly throughout the day of course, but while I occasionally check some threads I simply had to give up keeping up with the forum here all the time. It stopped being in my job description when I left the site, and there just aren't enough hours in the day.

FileShack being the biggest, and the rest a good deal smaller
Correction: Gamer's Hell is the biggest site in the list of participants, then 3D Gamers, then AVault, FileShack, and FileFront, all of them contributing more than 2 million visitors to the total of 19 million. So I'd say it's a pretty balanced group.

First off, nice job Frans.
Thanks.
Now I'll go into whine mode. One request I would make would be that when the Blue's logo above the message board is clicked that it doesn't open a new window. I like to use this to go back to the main page instead of hitting the back button and then having to refresh to make it current. Opening a new window is fine but it seems unnecessary.
Right, but I take it you have Launch Links enabled? That would cause the new window even for local links, which isn't intended indeed. I forgot the target="_self" on the logo link, and added that now. Try again.

I'm a bit confused by this remark:

Simpsons games (among others) simply fall outside the range of genres that get full coverage on Blue's News.

When in fact there was a full sub heading for when the game was released.
You're not the only one who was surprised by that full story. All I can say is that Steve and I don't always agree about such things.
But that's ok, I don't work here anymore and just contribute what I can, time and other factors permitting.

Maybe that's why your Simpsons review wasn't mentioned - Blue must get a hell of a lot of mail and he may have forgotten to forward yours to Frans.
Nope, I get all relevant mails, but just because it's mailed in doesn't mean it will automatically be included. Simpsons games (among others) simply fall outside the range of genres that get full coverage on Blue's News.

BTW, the back link on your Simpsons view is broken as well as the KotOR one. You should change:
Back to Front Page
to:
Back to Front Page

This will go back a directory and try to access the correctly extensioned index page.
Actually, that is guaranteed to not work on all browsers. Better is not to try and go up a directory level, but directly go back to the root level:

Back to Front Page

or even, quite simply:

Back to Front Page
