Elvis wrote: I too hope this means well for Frans and crew. Maybe we'll see Frans in a new incarnation (maybe something with 'grand poohba' in the title?). 3dgamers is super easy to navigate (fileplanet et al could stand to take a good look) and has a great collection of 'classic' stuff. Grand poohba sounds interesting, but I think my biz card will just say Editor-in-Chief as before. Our website design and content is also staying, and we'll keep collecting the hard-to-find classic stuff in addition to covering the latest titles. IGN recognizes that this is part of what attracts people to our site, and it's important to preserve that, while adding new things that, who knows <shudder> you might come to like as well.

Ray wrote: ...I hope this means well for Frans and crew, but I am a bit skeptical of 3D Gamers existing in place of IGN/GAMESPY's 3d gamers. I did not use 3DG too much, but it did seem to hold its own niche and was a great alternative for many people for downloading. I presume the downloading will eventually go Fileplanet, but I hope the site can still hold its own. From our FAQ again:
Q. Does this mean that you're moving to a FilePlanet style system? A. No. FilePlanet and 3D Gamers each offer services in their own unique ways, reaching different audiences. We may share some things in the future when we find that there are opportunities in scalability, but there are no plans for turning 3D Gamers into a FilePlanet clone.
How is this going to affect the mail for Blue's? I presume you're referring to us running mail services for bluesnews.com rather than my mail submissions of news bits. That service won't be affected in the short term, but in the longer term Blue plans to take back his mail service anyway, so we'll just have to insure a smooth transition.

General Ego wrote: so that means we have to endure fullscreen ads everytime we click a link? Does it also mean we're getting the "pretty" IGN (or GameSpy for that matter) watermarks on screenshots? Whatever the bad side-effects of this merger are (and I'm sure where will be some), this sucks, and IGN-GameSpy sucks major gorilla balls... Since we merely aggregate officially released screens (from official sites or the publishers) in one convenient place anyway, there's little point in watermarking them as they're not exclusive. But if it would occasionally happen in the future, it'll be a nice 3D Gamers watermark. Deal?
As for any ad changes, I can't comment on that simply because nothing has been decided yet. Our goal remains to keep the site as useful and usable as possible though.

Hi everyone, Thanks for all the feedback, and congratulations. I appreciate it. To those who are concerned, I understand that too, so let me try to answer some questions here.
Hump wrote: so Frans, is this a GOOD thing for you? I wanna say congrats but the way things like mergers work out people are just as likely to lose their meal-ticket as they are to gain security Yes, it's a good thing for the owners of 3D Gamers, I won't deny that. But money alone doesn't motivate me, I still thoroughly enjoy hunting down news and downloads, and making a useful contribution to the community. The deal specifically allows me to continue doing that as long as I like, so I'm going to do just that on 3D Gamers, and send in stuff to Blue's, for what I hope will be a long time.

3DGamers used to be my favorite place to download files from (since I'm not registered with another site), but recently the servers have been either real slow, or already at capacity. I wonder if they'll be able to fix that w/o starting to charge for certain servers.. Not sure if we can "fix" it entirely, as the download demand by our userbase seems insatiable. But we're in the process of preparing a new server to expand our capacity by another 100 Mbit. This will also be used to seed new files on our BitTorrent system (until the swarms are big enough to run off our existing two seed servers) so that those will receive a welcome kickstart.

You guys do BitTorrent too? Have been doing it for all popular files throughout the past year.
Who knows, in time, I might get to really like 3dGamers I can't wait.

They seem to have changed something about their servers lately, as they seem to be "at capacity" a lot more often now.. True, this is due to the recent flood of very popular demos (Rome, CMR2005, etc) and other files stretching our capacity. However, you should be able to download the Pariah movie without trouble from the Virginia server, and I also just added a BitTorrent for it since the clip turned out to be much more popular than I anticipated.
Further, we'll be adding another 100 Mbit download server in the near future to address the capacity issues.
