And now the password field on the post, edit and delete pages has been updated to accept up to 25 characters. Should be 'nuf.

Glad it works again. The root cause turned out to be that the password input field on the new/edit post page accepts only 10 characters, while the user account (e.g. the change password page) allows 25 chars. And yours was 15, hence the login went fine but posting was blocked due to the password mismatch.

News Comments > TrackMania Nations Forever Free Release
18. Re: No subject Apr 16, 2008, 12:32  Xymph

So what, exactly, is the incentive to buy the retail version? I owned Trackmania Sunrise (the manual/serial for which I lost forcing me to toss the CD) and loved it. I'm all for supporting the authors, but how can they give away such a huge game? Are there in-game adds or some other form of revenue I haven't thought of?
United has 6 additional environments (track types), three each from TM Original and Sunrise, with another 147 race tracks. United has three additional game modes: Puzzle, Platform and Stunt, with 21 tracks each. United supports ManiaLinks, an integrated browser for user pages and user-created game content. United uses a coppers system, an in-game currency which you need for various features, such as recording your time on a given track officially on the master servers, and paying for ManiaLinks content. Coppers are also needed by admins that want to host servers where the highest ranking players can compete. And there are further minor incentives, but that should do I guess.

15. Re: No subject Apr 16, 2008, 11:52  Xymph

So does Nations Forever include whatever tracks and other content are in the previous Nations game or not?
No, TMNF contains 65 new Stadium tracks (none of the old ones) and a new structure for the solo campaign. The cars are the same but they do have new skins for all the countries too.

I'm wondering the same thing... Will existing Nations servers I join need to be upgraded to Nations Forever before they're visible to both?
No, Nations servers will remain visible in the old Nations server browser, and the master server for that game will stay up for the foreseeable future (Nadeo hasn't said how long though). Admins can choose to upgrade to Forever, and then their servers will be visible to TMNF and TMUF players, who can also drive together on Stadium (Nations) tracks.

Hopefully tracks are compatible so it's an easy move, as losing existing user-created content would probably stop a lot of people making the switch.
Most tracks are compatible, that was already the case with TM United. TMU cars can also be used in TMNF and TMUF, not sure about TMN (and older) cars.

Yes! You should post more!
I'm posting plenty, just not here. I racked up 930+ posts on the TM forums since last summer, that's quite enough for me.

Is United different enough from TM Sunrise to warrant a purchase?
United contains all 7 environments from the previous three TrackMania games: TMO (Rally, Desert, Snow), TMS (Bay, Coast, Island) and TMN (Stadium), plus lots of other features that didn't exist in TMS yet. See the features list linked in the story. Whether that warrants a purchase is your decision of course.

Very good mr. Holmes. I decided not to renew that contract out of my own free will, because I really need a sabbatical.

Anyone have a mirror up for this? Icculus is rather bogged down atm. I'll mirror once I have it downloaded, but that might be 10 hours. :/
I sent my link to Icculus this morning, but he hasn't gotten around to adding it yet:

You may get a 503 (Server Busy) on some public mirrors when they're maxxed out but you should never get a 403, unless there's a problem with the way you're trying to access the download (which we can explain) or there's a real problem with a particular file or mirror (which we certainly want to fix).

So, can you help us look into it by telling me the exact URL you got the 403 on?

Frans
PS. Sorry for the delay in reply, I was out last night and this morning.

Yeah, that may take some getting used to, after having left the corporate world in 1998 and starting here at Blue's in 1999. But of course we've met them before signing and guess what... they're actually nice people. %):D

Anyway, after you've upcoming corporate sodomization you can reinvest your profits into another venture, with which I wish you good luck!
LOL. Thanks... I think. :o;P

I would have never sold 3dfiles.com had I known what was going to happen. At the time, I thought everyone was making so much money and buying stuff up, it would be ok. Sure, they had similar sites, but who cared? It was a short ride to realizing were were owned by a typical corporation and a little shorter before we were out of work watching our paper money tumble with the dot com crash and lost our beloved website.
Yes, that was a real shame. But those were different times as well. As evidenced by all their acquisitions, IGN's strategy is to expand using sites that increase their coverage in different areas of the 'net, and that only works by keeping those sites alive and improve them. Nobody can look into the future and the 'net is a volatile place, but for the next several years I think this is a viable approach.

We were courted and promised all the same things I am reading about now. Hope it works out, but I hope even more you got a iron clad contract and CASH up front.
Yes, I think we've got a good contract (our lawyers were damn expensive enough %)) and we're very well off financially, thank you. We also have employment/contractor contracts for two years, which I think is a good indication of IGN's commitment to this deal.

The stories I could tell... The internet has come back, and to a decent level and hopefully it planes off here and sustains.
Right... I think the biz is a lot more stable than 4-5 years ago.

Best of luck Frans, we go way, way back brother and you deserve it. I understand after working for as long and hard as you have wanting to do this. We always hoped, for one reason, to bring 3dfiles to the next level (beyond what 2 guys could do alone) when we sold and I hope it works better for you!
Thanks Tim, much appreciated. We're not just hoping but also working hard for the best too.

In the not too distant future you will see 3dgamers host exclusive demo/betas, mark my words, even though they signed a petition saying they wouldn't. They are on the other side of the fence now and the tune will change.
I couldn't reply on this yesterday (and seem to have driven Overon to the brink by that ;P) because this was still being discussed. Now it indeed looks like "exclusive" demo releases may happen occasionally on 3D Gamers, 3DG & FP together, or (as before) just on FilePlanet.

Personally I don't like or enjoy that, but I don't have much influence on it. Under the terms of the deal I retain full editorial control over the content of 3D Gamers, but IGN owns the site and determines the advertising, marketing and promotions on it. Those demo deals fall in that area, so IGN is calling the shots there. So I guess the other sites of the petition will have to carry on without 3D Gamers.

Well, I can see how this would be good for Frans and the 3DGamers crew, but pardon my skepticism for not being exactyly confident in Gamespy/IGN's good intentions. We'll see how it turns out, could be nothing. 3DGamers has been my main download site for a while now, so hopefully nothing much will change.
That's alright, skepticism is understandable. I'm not looking to "convert" anyone, I'm just explaining. I guess there's always gonna be some primitive knee-jerk reactions (you know who you are ;P) but all I can ask is to wait and see what the actual effects of the acquisition will be, and hope that most users will like how 3D Gamers will evolve.

Quick question for Frans: did they make you sign a non-compete?
Well, obviously I'm not at liberty to discuss the exact terms of the deal.

Thank you for the feedback, as that is quite important to the community. One question remains in regards to the availablity of files on 3DGamers.com. Will the ability to download patches and demos remain the same as it is now, or will there become a registration method and special paid service similar to GameSpy's. One of the main issues myself and many more have with FilePlanet is the que that many have to be in unless you are a paid subscriber. This is especially frustrating when sites like UnrealTournament.com list FilePlanet as a mirror to download the latest patch for their creations, then forcing one to either wait in que or pay a monthly fee.
This is again answered in our FAQ, but it is important so I'll repeat that our downloads will remain free on our own server network.

That said, it is also well known (and has been observed in this thread) that our servers are often maxed out, especially after a popular demo release. So we've been looking at ways to improve our service in that area for a while already, and that will continue after this deal and may actually happen sooner thanks to IGN's resources. But the details of that additional service haven't been worked out so I can't talk about them, other than that they will not replace our existing system completely, because everyone recognizes that is part of what brings people to 3D Gamers.
