new servers must mean more bandwidth Blue? Serving more pics. I like. Feels like the "good ol days". No, more like regaining the ability to actually upload and process screens (the previous, intermediate server didn't allow that at all), and me improving the underlying script to make it easier for Blue to resume posting them. Glad you approve. |

Edit: Got the error again when I tried to post, took me 3 tries. Here's the error page dump: Syntax error in a Perl module that took a bit long to fix because I got distracted. Sorry about that. |

It looks great, fine work 2, Blue and Franz - and sorry about the 403 joke! Suuuure, and the 'z' is a joke too, I guess? |

I'm guessing that's Spore. I just seem to get a 403 error. Can you determine from which URL exactly you're getting a 403? |

Hey Blue, Firefox 3.0.2, still getting & entities in the RSS feed. As of right now, just in the Far Cry 2 and the Fallout 3 articles, the next 4 headlines are fine. Some double escaping going on there, fixed now. Thanks for the heads-up.
And the surprise feature is now online. |

I like the new date stamps. I was wondering whether anyone would spot that, good catch.
Some of the things I've worked on and will be working on are visible (albeit occasionally minor, like the timestamps), others are on the admin side so you won't see them. But it's fun to work on them now that I have some spare time, and can address things I never got around to while I was still posting news here.

Thanks guys.
I figured out a way to restore the timestamps of about 280 of the affected 470+ posts from a backup. So those sort correctly again (except with Threads view). Given the circumstances of this particular problem (that I won't bore you with), that's the best I can do.

Re: Bug? Weird Sort Orders |

Aye kanniball, it looks to me like all the posts have timestamp set to "Sep 18, 2008, 13:01" and therefore there is no ordering. On top of that though all those posts are listed in #1-20 order, and the more recent posts (which are working normally) are back to the #20-1 (i.e. most recent first) order. So there's 19,18,1,2,3...
[edit: going back to the main page after posting this I see comment counts have returned on some threads so I guess someone is working on them right now]. Yes, I found the cause of the missing post counts: new posts had be stored with the wrong boardid field, but fixing them (all 480 or so posts) affected their timestamps, in turn messing up the sort order in the related threads. But that 'sorts' itself out over time, if you'll excuse the pun. |

I did notice one thing (we shall see if it's still there) -- posting a message results in a blank BN page with no content in the body. Yes I noticed that too, let's see if it's fixed after a little tweak.
Edit: Yup, looks good.

Just the capability for Blue to ban people like...well everyone probably has their favourites He can just never give certain people *cough*nin*cough* the power of the banhammer, in case they go crazy with it I don't think nin meant giving others that power. And Blue has had ban power for a long time, but chose not to use it most of the time and deal with abusers another way. |

Hey, do I get to get last post before everything explodes?
The DNS switch has been propagating for a while, and nothing seems to have blown up so far (knock on wood), so no Last Post for you. |

And no, the board remains the same Booooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! If there are suggestions which (small) improvements can be made, I might be able to work them in after the move. But I'm afraid this will never become a full-featured board like pbpBB or VBulletin, the existing codebase (derived from Chatbear back in 2001) seems too primitive for that.

One of the reasons for that is that Blue's has the most news, and is platform agnostic (unlike other 'general gaming' sites which have gone xbox360/ps3/whatever). Actually, Blue's has been PC-centric for most of its 11 year run, only expanding into more complete console coverage in the past year or 2-3. |

Any chance you could post the new site IP so we can stop by if we don't get a speedy update? The database accesses on the old server will be redirected to the MySQL server on the new one, so regardless of whether your DNS has updated already you should be seeing the current, live site. That's how UGO handled the first move too.
But, uhm, just in case that won't work as planned, the new server is at http://216.105.160.130/ (it just doesn't have a current database dump loaded yet).
And no, the board remains the same, but the Post Message form is back on new stories (among other tweaks and fixes). |
