Wonder if they'll ever fix that damn studder issue that IO blames Vista for in their games.

Looking forward to L4D2 and the improvements.

They need to throw in a non-stop bitching horde that swarms out of a game store in the mall setting. That'd be fun.

The article doesn't say anything about PC game in development. This could be a console exclusive.

Really looking forward to this one.

On the DRM front, could go either way as 2K Games (owned by Take-Two) is publishing it. The "shareholder shackle" is ridiculous and frustrates their honest customers. It's sad when I have to log into a digital distribution platform and then log into GFWL just to play a game. I'm sure there's a third layer of BS coming down the pipe eventually, on top of in-game advertising.

Saitek Eclipse

Okay, so we have the same keyboard. I wonder if their .exe is misdetecting registration and thinks it is a joystick.

theyarecomingforyou,

What is your setup? Seems they are blaming Vista. I am curious as I am also experiencing the 3 sec pause issue for Kane and Lynch as well as this demo. The issue does not exist for the entire Hitman series and Freedom Fighters on my rig, so it's something IO introduced with Kane and Lynch. Their BS "Try plugging in a PS2 keyboard" and "It's how windows vista polls USB" answers do not fly. I've watched all of them in a procmon and see where it's their .exe running through a joystick reg value repeatedly (hundreds of button values). I don't own a joystick nor have ever had one registered with the OS.

This becomes very annoying when you're in the open areas speed running across the map and some moron kid with terrible aim locks on you with an assault rifle or sniper rifle and hits you.

They have the passive modules for lock-on avoidance. Just have to give up the points from somewhere else and focus on role based loadouts. I've enjoyed the open beta and am currently enjoying the retail game. It's fun.

News Comments > On Modern Warfare 2 Pricing
25. Re: On Modern Warfare 2 Pricing Aug 19, 2009, 01:28 Sty

I would think they'd love a chain reaction of publishers increasing prices. They are a publisher by the way.

I know who they are and their intent. I was referring to the negative aspects concerning a potential chain reaction triggered by this trend. There are many possibilities.

Some of the new approaches seem as if publishers want brick-and-mortar distribution to die completely. Which I'm fine with if they could provide a decent service. But I have a feeling it will become a subscription service on top of game purchases for each publisher.

Wow, $10 more? Really? And if the industry follows suit, then you'll be paying $60 for a beta in a box (or shit in a box in most cases). Screw that. Do they have any idea the chain reaction this will create?

Yeah, unfortunately after reading reviews, buyer perspectives and now this announcement... no thanks, I'm done. I won't chance getting burned again. Seems they've learned nothing over the past ten years... other than people will continue to pay for eyecandy.

Custom clothes/clothing options: Let players choose what they want to wear or have several different options so that you aren't stuck watching a character you don't like. Ideally people could upload their own clothes and other users could check if they wanted to see them or just use the defaults.

I could see changing up color and design as a potential for friendly fire. Especially with textures that don't break up with the background or don't contrast against the infected.

Custom Weapons/weapon options: Same as above, but with weapons, let people use whatever they want, or have so many options to choose from that people can personalize how they play.

I'm sure this would have a lot of development and QA overhead. Novel idea, though.

A clumsy, archaic game with an overly-complicated interface that's played mostly by elitist assholes? No wonder PC gaming has been relegated to fringe status.

LMAO Well put.

News Comments > ARMA II Patch
30. Re: ARMA II Patch Jun 21, 2009, 12:50 Sty

I remember a time when games didn't require patches. Or if there was a patch, it was to add hardware support or address some totally obscure scenario. Around 1999-ish was when the corporate pushing really began setting in and products were being rushed to market faster and faster. QA was cut back or liquidated. Patches began flooding the market after tighter dev cycles and limited QA. Initial patches were small and eventually became more frequent. People were intially going "wtf", but after customers were trained and comfortable with the process it became the new standard. "Low investment, High return" was what a former EA exec informed us of at a developers convention lecture. We kept buying it and they all milked it.

IMHO, when it comes to patching: Hardware/driver issues are excusable, especially with a hardware market that is inundated. Gameplay, scripting, UI type issues are inexcusable. Especially with what I've seen in the past few years. Mind you, it's not just games. It is software industry wide (my current line of work). It's ridiculous on both sides of the curtain.

News Comments > ARMA II Interview
36. Re: ARMA II Interview May 31, 2009, 23:06 Sty

Nice justification. Sounds like you don't want to play the game in the first place.

I was being a realist. You want "justification"? Fine, I'll oblige:

I followed the OFP previews for the year or so prior (when it was Flashpoint 1985: Status Quo and we saw the LST in damn near every screenshot which blew our minds). I purchased the Euro release from GoGamer (think they were CompuExpert back then) when it first went up for sale. I waded through the upgrades and patches until it was 'stable' (far longer than the U.S. release purchasers had to). But it had weapons, vehicles and map perks which I thought was novel for the new era of "release, then patch" bullshit. Reward me for being a patient customer instead of making me regret your company's mistakes. I bought Red Hammer. I bought Resistance. I remained among the community and played heavily for years. I loved the core of the game enough to overlook the flaws. Graphics didn't make a damn to me at the time and I thought OFP's graphics represented well. I wanted the game to succeed on all points.

Admittedly, I purchased Arma with high hopes and was ultimately unimpressed due to the problems, patches and design issues/decisions through the entire experience. It's great BIS was expanding into console market which was very evident in the design. More power to them on making money, I can dig it. But the presentation felt that they focused heavily on eyecandy to keep up with the market and let their old mistakes go unchecked. It felt rushed all over the place, especially in mission design. Maybe they fell victim to feature creep and deadlines? I don't know. I still stomached it and still saw the diamond in the rough they are having a problem freeing.

Am I looking forward to repeating the same tired ol' hump through the mud after 8 years of it? No, I am not. And as a paying customer who has supported them and recommended their products to friends and fellow vets over the past 8 years, I think I have a sound justification for my opinion. Do I want to play the game? Hell yeah. Do I want to put up with shoddy code, mission design and dying support? Shit no. I will be monitoring reviews, word of mouth and player ratings. Maybe it's old age setting in, but my patience for bullshit is growing thin. And I will continue to vote with my wallet (purchases for myself, my kids and gifts to others).

Given the latest info on benchmarks and continued bugs, I'll avoid the launch. Wait until their paid beta (patch-fest) is over and pick it up for cheap. Here's to hoping they iron it out in the next 1-2 years (doubt they will by summer).
