If I'm not mistaken, this is the second time Ubi has released a patch to reverse the Alcohol 120% check. I know Codemasters has been doing the check with a number of their games, as well.

I'd be very doubtful that the Japanese-English dictionary story is genuine. You can just see Graham Chapman as the General walking in and ending the story because "it's just gotten entirely too silly." Yahoo Entertainment News is notorious for printing purely fictional news items as "entertainment". See also: The previous story about the man suffocated by a stripper's copious breasts at his bachelor party.

...and PETER H. MOSES! I just saw the megastitial ad (well the big white "Action cancled" space for it, anyway) there between today and yesterday. That's hella annoying, but I suppose it wouldn't be there if it wasn't necessary.

"No sir, I don't like it." I feel much more comfortable once I've clicked a comments link and get my .plan list back. That was always the first thing I checked. (Seein' as it was at the top, I suppose.)
I also liked having the UGO logo hidden over in the corner where I didn't have to think about it.
Now the new header, while perhaps more "stylish", is a lot less functional - just a lot of dead space.
If you -have- to keep it (and the big UGO logo), my personal preference would be to see the UGO logo in line with the Blue's logo so you can chop the header height down a bit. It looks tacked-on with them out of alignment like they are, as if you had a space and just started randomly stamping logos in it.
Finally, I also much preferred to have the banner ads hidden away before the title logo and content ("outside" the site, as it were), instead of right there in the thick of things. But I suppose that's the point - don't make it possible for the user to ignore them. (I see ugly white "Action canceled" boxes for the ads anyway thanks to my modified Hosts file that redirects most ad servers to 127.0.0.1.)

Sounds to me like he's saying ATI and NVidia hardware run it about the same when you factor in the lower precision pathways for the NVidia hardware (which doesn't produce a significant effect in terms of quality), but when you try to run them both through the same standard pathways, NVidia's GF\FX hardware chugs through it.

So far, all of the Bink-format videos are simply high-res "as you would see it" versions of the E3 video content (with the possible exception of the Bink-format G-Man video, which I seem to remember but can't rightly recall).

Normally I wouldn't condone it, but look for a no-cd patch for Vice City. The pause you describe is the reason that I finally broke down and downloaded a no-cd patch, and the problem has disappeared.

You're not a gamer, you're a person! (Ugh.) I agree, though - people go about judging games as if we're only allowed to purchase one to the exclusion of all others. "Boo Doom 3! HL2 4-eva!" Me? I'll buy both...and probably pick up Oblivion Lost to boot.
Having seen the trailer for Stalker...the movement and physics (ragdoll, etc) definately have that uncomfortable jittery feeling that made Devestation so unpleasant to play. The lighting effects and scope of the game world as presented were rather impressive, though. This comment was edited on Jul 16, 04:00. |

Profound. Have you considered contacting the New York Times about doing a syndicated opinion column?
The thing that troubles me about the whole affair isn't that there were some bugs that popped up (even serious ones that should have been caught in the month this patch was in QA)...it's the almost total lack of communication from Ubi to the community. A message on the official site announcing the patch, and much later, after news items on the bug have already been appearing on fan sites, a second message stating they're aware of "the problems" and are working on a fix, and that's it. I know that offering too many excuses will breed contempt, but they certainly give off an aura of isolation. If they've posted other information on the messageboards in regards to the issue, then I haven't been able to find it.

From http://www.theplatoon.com/ravenshield/ - 1.3 Server Crashings - 6/17/2003 - Munkey The 1.3 patch has an error that causes servers to crash on the "deploying countdown". The crash has you (and everyone else in the server) sitting in the game staring at the countdown stuck on 1. This happens at random times. The only way to exit is to open console and type in either disconnect or quit. Hopefully there will be a server side fix for this soon, or maybe a full 1.3 patch fix. We'll keep an eye on the situation at hand.

Why doesn't he just say what he means? "Dissatisfied with previous studies which concluded there was no significant causative relationship between video game violence and violent behavior, we're going to keep doing studies until one comes out with a result we like."
I'm gonna lay this out the way I see it: 1) In persons whose decision-making strategies for dealing with conflicts and interpersonal relationships are not fully developed, violent games can alter their behavior in a manner that makes them more likely to solve problems in a violent manner. This is true of immature persons, be they young or otherwise, though minors are considerably more likely to be immature in this respect.
2) Mature individuals have concrete decision making strategies that allow them to distinguish between acceptible solutions to conflicts in real life interpersonal situations and fantasy situations. (Sports, video games, etc.)
3) Parents\guardians play the pivotal role in directing immature individuals toward maturity by teaching through example (by their behavior) and by direct instruction. They, more than anyone else, should be aware of their child's level of maturity. They should be responsible for determining what media and entertainment their child is capable of interacting with.
4) A survey of people who play violent games will always turn up more likely on average to be predisposed to violent behavior because people who are already predisposed to violent behavior will be drawn to violent media. There is no causitive link between violent media and violent behavior in Mature individuals.
5) I would argue that football is more harmful to children's development than "Soldier of Fortune 2" for isntance. Football teaches children that the way to "win" is to "defeat" your competition (by force, no less), when the proper solution to most interpersonal conflicts is cooperation and compromise. It teaches that if someone is not with you, they're against you. Soldier of Fortune 2 demonstrates the same thing, but it's obvious that its solutions are fantasy and its opponents are clearly evil, while football is more innocuous - "harmless entertainment".
6) Parents should not rely on games (or media) to be babysitters, and they should take care to be as aware as possible of what music, games, and movies of which their children are partaking. Parents should discuss with their children those aspects of games that are clearly in contrast to behaviors which are acceptible in RealLife(tm).
7) Game developers should be free to include whatever legal content as they see fit, but should take aims to make it obvious before purchase what types of content are present (or approximate maturity appropriate). Distributors should be responsible for not selling "Mature" content to minors, but Parents should be the final authority.

Good to see the fanboi's are still alive and kicking. For god sake, accept the reality already, the MP sucks. Deal with it, you loser. Not a fanboi. Messageboard troll. Just pretend he didn't say anything. He'll eventually dry up and (apparently) shoot his dong off.

Performance |

I was only able to get decent performance by starting my own server (and apparently missed where you set the max players because I know my cable upload can only handle 5-6 players max), with "Simulation mode" and "Full Physics". This also turns the movement speed down a bit. The non-sim movement is way too darned fast.

SoF2 on Xbox Live |

According to the XBox SoF2 article, Live will support up to 10 players per game. I'm interested to see how defense-oriented modes like Demolition (with two demolition sites) pan out with a max of 5 players per team. Voice comm setup sounds pretty slick, though.
