57. Halo2 vs. DooM3 not Aug 9, 2002, 13:59 THESAL

Being a Computer Gamer, FPSs have become my choice in gaming genres, but I have found interest in many other genres, keeping in mind the intentions of the developers. For example, Baldur's Gate is another one of my favorite games, and one reason for that is the fact that the developers, Bioware, made the game for a specific audiance, AD&D RPG fans. I believe that the most important aspect of a succesful game is not the game itself, but the intention of the developers in terms of what the game is trying to achieve in all aspects.
I think it is wrong to try an compare the graphical aspects of these two games for main reason: the underlying reason for the existance of the graphics. When Halo 2 comes to mind, the graphics and such seem to lean more towards the effect of creating a flashy, adrenelin rush of combat frenzy. Doom III, however, is not just some fast pased FPS. Its graphics are geared towards suspence and dramatic interaction with the environment. In short, the graphics in Doom III are made to scare you, and keep you from seeing what is going to scare you until just the right moment, which is obvious from the attention to detail in lighting.
Todd Hollenshead, CEO, discusses in the Doom III Legacy about how Carmack doesn't simply show the best of the current availible technology. Instead, Carmack strives to show what the future of games will look like, and also to show other companies what they should be doing.
Case in point: Marathon. People argue about how much better Marathon looks and plays, but what people fail to mention is how Marathon came after Doom. No wonder it was a good FPS for its time, when it was built with such an equally strong predecessor in mind. Doom III won't be 'over the top' better then future games in the same field, but it will show what future games will be like in the field of FPSs.
I don't know what the great intention of Bungie is when it comes to Halo 2. Personally, I think the game will strive to follow the same story-based elements present in the original. Carmack has never stated that Doom III will be story driven. Rather, he has announced that Doom III will be a retelling of the Doom Story which existed back in '91. HIS intention is not to create this uber-realistic world, where the exact physics of every weapon, object, and creature makes the game feel more 'true to life.' Such an idea would be pointless, since if you really want to understand what kickback does to you, try shooting a real gun, instead of seeing how much you view tilts when you're holding down the fire button when your sub-machine gun is equipped. Instead, Carmack's plan is to create this world that you, the player, can immerse yourself into, and escape FROM reality. While there are elements of reality contained within this environment, they are geared towards enchancing the evironment, and all the more the scare you.
Now, both of these games can become great games in their own rights, since they have such powerful titles to base themselves on. Every monster, weapon, structure, and so on from their predecessor can be taken, improved, and reinserted to make the gaming expriance even more powerful the second time through.
Again, this post is not saying that either game will better, because they cannot, and should not, be in competition with eachother. These are all my opinions, however, so if you disagree with what anything I've stated, that's your opinion as well, which I won't find offensive or wrong. I'm sure that Halo 2 will as good of a release as Doom III, for the audiance that it is intended for. I believe that both Bungie and Id, which are both well established developers, know how to gear their games to the right audiances, and if they go through with thier intentions, they will please their audiance. "It is easy to please a few people, and it is easy to displease a few people. However, while it is easy to displease everyone, it is impossible to displease everyone" - Mike Schiciano. Personally, I'm looking forward to Doom III, being an avid, and long term fan of Id Software, and Doom itself as a series, but I will be looking forward to seeing how well Halo 2 achieves its own goals in its field of gaming.

99. Real life? Why play that? Jul 31, 2002, 13:11 THESAL

I don’t wish to awe any of you with my knowledge of FPS or what I have learned as an artist, which really is not that great of a knowledge by the way. Anyways, I never really found out what was so interesting about Counter Strike mainly because it was just trying to simulate real life. When I play a game I want to be submersed in a world that is nothing like the one I live in, I mean hell I live in this world I don’t want to pay money and play a game the dose just what I can do it this world, I want to go some where were only my imagination could possibly take me.
Carmack said that the main thing that he is trying to do is scare us, and dark shadows are a lot scarier then real ones. Artist like Caravaggio and Leonardo used extreme dark shadows in their works and history has labeled them as some of the greatest artist of all times. Some people don’t agree with there works but still more people are amazed by it then by other pieces of art. What I am getting at is the Carmack is not trying to make this game perfect for everyone, he is not trying to make a brilliant and epic story that runs through the game, he is not trying to make is super realistic. All he wants to do is scare the hell out of us by taking us in to his own vision of Hell.
When I buy DooM 3 I want to be buying a ticket in to a world that I haven’t seen similar to in about 10 years. I hope that the world that Carmack creates is nothing short of brilliance and horror.

P.S. Sorry is my spelling or gamer was off.
