Yeah, as disgusting as it is true.
While those of us with Steam accounts and HL2 loaded won't be able to play until someone somewhere says it's ok. Hmm what are the advantages of Steam again?

AI Bots are much smarter than BF1942 Bots and they actualy follow orders. Some maps are too small but I've learned to adjust the speed of the vehicles down for tight manuenvering. What may seem like imballance on some maps just requires a little strategy in groups.
Overall I'm very impressed being the fact its a console port.

I am buying this for the SP. I gave up on the MP a while ago ;/
The SP was probably the most immersive Q3 engined game I've ever played. If they get the MP right this time, I'll be happy.

Carmacks is a genius and role model to many game programers but the field and genre he helped foster is about to overrun him. In two more years his works will be indistiguishable from the competition.

Good point on support. LucasArts is cutting staff loose lately. Not a good sign. I wonder what kind of tools if any will be available. Probably none. Hmmmmm.

"The PC version enables up to 32 players online and 64 using a LAN connection. The PS2 and Xbox versions enable 16 players to go online and fight." from IGN

I had written off any Star Wars or LucasArts games but his one may just be worth looking at. 16 Player plus bots. If the bots are decent this could worth a look.

American McGee was forced out of ID and went on a sabatycal or something. Talked about 3D online gambling before going into production with his Alice title which actualy made it to market in spite of him. Since then he's been riding on his associations with past glory more than specific talent. Carbon6 seemed more hype than a legitament developer and of course OZ is history. Now he looks to get associated with a cult classic Horror icon.

The last I heard John Romero formed company called Monkeystone creating games for hand helds.

Its a bit of an irony that people in Euroland have to wait an entire week before they can buy Doom 3. With the Web almost anyone can download it now anywhere in the world. I think there are at least two details that delay releases: Retail Merchants and Int'l Censor Review issues of content. In this day and age of universal communincations it would be a novel idea if the gaming business utilized the tools their audience uses on a daily basis. Some old business habits are had to change.

Irregardless of ones reasoning or which means you get Doom 3. If you play it BUY IT. You can't eat a meal then tell the waitress your not paying because the food wasn't good anyway. Support the developers who have put an enormous amount of time into the product.

Though I am sure some of these people posting are over stating their position a tad, I don't intend to install a piece of software that imbeds itself like a tick on my hard drive. I almost installed on my new rig last night, now I am relieved I didn't.

Very informative thread.
Is there a list of games that use this Star Farce protection scheme? I want to avoid this companies software like the plague.

Although it's NOT clear, but I would take a guess that with games like Far Cry doing so well, gamers would really expect a magnitude better from Valve's HL2. Looking at the Strider videos just aren't so impressive anymore.

Valve can afford to go back to the drawing board and redo all the eye candy gaming essentials. Yeah and rethink the minimum spec of a 700MHz computer.

Activision is looking to create a franchise with COD just like EA's MOH series. As great as the single player was, the MP was/is plagued by gameplay imballances. From day one there's been a rift between action and realism players. How did the same developers of MOH get MP all mucked up?

Copy protection since way back when.... Apr 10, 2004, 14:42

I remember in the early eighties the movie studios tried to make their commercial released VHS tapes copy-proof. The original Back to the Future was the 1st to try and failed miserably. The playback on many VCR's was terrible. It came as no surprise that a few slick people were able to make duplicates free of the copy protection scheme and started selling them. The copy protection was soon dropped in manufacture as rentals and purchases of the movie dropped.

There is a need for copy protection. It does stop the casual copier. I think that it should be serial based as opposed to CD or DVD based. There are just too many CD and DVD models out there spanning over 5 years alone. Paying customers should not have to suffer poor perfomance or being locked out of something they legitimately paid for. This makes it so that a casual PC gamer has to know someone who can get cracks for them leading to eventualy getting it themselves. So it turns into a catch 22 for the developer and publisher unless its a super hit.

I played Far Cry almost the entire weekend and I was constantly taken in by the gameplay and grahics. Now Painkiller has gone Gold.
What must be going through the minds of Id and Valve at the moment?

Wow. This is a throw back to the days of the Amiga. I waited 2 years, 1 if I was lucky for game to port.
The ouch part is that they are "Anouncing plans for MAC port".
I can't wait to see the minimal system specs on that box.

This past weekends Best Buy ad had a big DOOM3 demon plastered in the computer ad section. Upgrade now to be able to play the next gen game like Doom3. I don't think they would go out on a limb and ask people to upgrade unless some sort of confirmation has been forwarded to the retail channels.
If it's happening more and more ads will promote it.

There is a whole slew of quality FPS games coming out this year. There's even quite a bit of competition popping up from overseas Devs. But the UT2K4 demo offers a variety of gameplay options and game types that the others don't. It will probably have quite a bit of staying power thanks to mods.

In the meantime it's great to be an FPS player. Far Cry and Painkiller releases are just around the corner.

DNF late 2004 or 2005, 1997 and beyond...LOL.

Somebody put George Brousard in a spider hole and fill it with quick dry cement. Maybe then the game may actually come out.
And just which engine will it be using in 2005....HL2 or Quake 4 engine. This is the longest running joke in game development history.
