Re K/M on consoles...

With the hardware it could be done. Something like this, maybe

http://www.thepowerboard.com/

This is rather expensive for what essentially is a wooden tray, but could it be a step in the right direction?

I suck at building things, but I could probably go to home depot, buy some wood, screws, get a cheap mousepad to glue to the surface, and presto, less than $20, and it would have feet so it's not sitting directly on my lap (it would arch over my lap)

Right, because everyone knows that you have to buy a completely new PC every few years. It's not like you can just replace the videocard or anything.

You practically do. I built a $1500 machine almost 3 years ago. 7900GTX, 2 GB PC3200, and a A64 4000+ (non-X2, socket 939). It's practically worthless for new games (Crysis, BioShock, DiRT, etc.) if I want any sort of decent framerate at anything above 1024x768 with at least a little AA, AF, and V-Sync...nothing takes me out of a game more than the slicing you get without v-sync, but turning it on drains so much. Sure, I could through an 8800 GTS in there, but after spending $250, how much of a bottle-neck do you think my CPU would be? SQUEEZED TO DEATH. And since it's Socket 939, X2 options are limited (and dumb), so before you know it...I've upgraded CPU, GPU, RAM, and mobo. Instead, I took that $250, scrounged up another $100, and got a 360.

BTW, you are probably referring to the rumored specs for AC. The ones that said you needed 3 gigs of RAM. Yeah, those specs were wrong. Updated, official specs have since been released and they are considerably lower.

RAM...I could care less about. RAM is dirt cheap. I KNOW AC would destroy my PC on all but the lowest settings.

By "wonderful framerates," you mean 30 fps, with occasional slowdown and frequent texture pop-in?

30 FPS must be the minimum, cause it looks fantastic to me. At one point it dropped to noticeable levels...when I came over the hill and saw Jerusalem...then it finished buffering, and was fine. And I have yet to see any texture problems.

This is all of course ignoring some key issues...1920x1080 resolution with fantastic detail, AA is not a problem, slicing is not a problem, all on a 57" TV. If I want to show a group of friends how awesome the game is, do I really want to crowd 4+ people around my head and a 19" screen?

Cold reality...I have tested a game on both my PC and the 360, and that's DiRT...never a framerate issue on the 360, 1920x1080, etc. etc...whereas on my PC, at 1280x1024, not much detail, etc., the BEST I was getting was low 30s, alone, on a backroad track with trees to block the view distance. Put a competitor in on an open track, it hovers around 20-23...hit the dune buggy track with 8 AI drivers...I don't even want to think about how low it was.

I've already worked out the math...I am a movie buff to begin with, so I'll have a killer home theater setup regardless, so that dollar amount is factored away. It is a definitely cheaper to build a decent computer every 4-5 years and buy a new console every 3-4 years than to keep up a killer gaming machine every 2-3 years.

I LOVE PC gaming. And even with the XFPS and other technologies listed, it's still the better place for FPS gaming. But damn is it going to be fun pwning console kiddies when I get my K/M hooked to the 360.

58. Not so hardcore anymore Mar 20, 2008, 15:14 Ronin

After all, you're not hardcore unless you live hardcore, and the legend of the mortgage was way hardcore.

A house, a wife, continuing education...these have kept me from my beloved PC gaming throne (before you break out the whips, she plays too, we just have...other...things to do together). I like others found myself weighing consoles against PCs...$400 vs $1200+ (especially when you look at requirements and recommendations for Assassin's Creed) is not a terribly hard call.

There's no getting around it, the controller will never match the keyboard/mouse combo attack in FPS games...but then you've got products like the XFPS that allow you to use that combo on a 360.

I already had an HD TV, and now when I play Assassin's Creed in 57 glorious 1080i goodness at wonderful framerates...I wonder how I could have dealt with this game on a PC without going bankrupt.

I wonder how bare the site would look if PC was the only thing on it. Beyond that, if it was only PC, I'd expect to see more info on mods.

Boy I feel old. I actually DO remember a time when it was just PC game news...hell...I remember when it was almost entirely Quake related. (for those looking at my '99 join year, I was reading here before then, just didn't have anything to say)

Take a gander at some of the early stuff here: http://bluesnews.com/archives/

PS3: Why would I want an overpriced Blu-Ray drive?

Except it's the only BD player in its price range that's ready for the next firmware upgrade...all the cheaper ones won't get the new features. Plus with all the things it does besides game, including the soon and coming PlayTV, it's the ultimate home theater extension/PC.

17. Beowulf ad won't go away Feb 26, 2008, 13:13 Ronin

I don't know if it's been fixed today, but the pop-up ad at the top of the page for Beowulf won't go away by hitting close. It just reloads. Have to wait for it to complete.

(Don't tell me to just use Ad-Block Plus, I do, but disable it for Blue, cause well, the man's gotta eat)

So if you don't like the discussion going this way, then bitch at the developers.

I don't like THIS discussion going this way, because the news post is about Portal...not consoles vs PCs.

I think the console vs PC debate is an important one...I'm just flabbergasted at how quickly it derailed. The post doesn't even say a thing about consoles.

Yawn, out of the 50+ comments that puts it in the 3rd most popular thread on blues right now, there's what... half a dozen about portal?

yeah, about 4 of them are positive.

You guys are pathetic. I posted the first response, hoping to steer the responses to something like "yay! more cake." But somehow this turned into a PC vs Console debate (not somehow...Overon...this is all your damn fault, you should have just stuck with "Portal is the kind of innovation that the PC gaming as a platform needs."

I'm just going to get it over with and invoke Godwin's Law...People who buy console FPS games instead of PC FPS games are destroying the PC! Just like the Nazis destroyed half of Europe! The president of EA supported Hitler!

76. sigh... Dec 19, 2007, 15:34 Ronin

THIS IS NOT CG! It even says in the news post:

The clip includes gameplay footage

Just because the game shots were void of a hud and weapon doesn't mean they weren't taken from in-game moments (I recall some games could lose the weapon and hud just by some simple console commands)...especially the first, when you're getting smacked around and you see the blood splashes on the screen.

Wait, where was the gameplay footage? All I saw were in-game cinematics.

If you're going to start hyping a game with DNF's history make sure you have some of the game actually made in advance. Duuuuur-huur.

It's called a Teaser trailer. To tease you. Show you (briefly) how good the game looks, not give you an in-depth synopsis (that's what the full trailer will be for). Besides, at least we're seeing the game engine at work, instead of full rendered CG.

1. downloads are the future... Dec 19, 2007, 10:07 Ronin

...what a load of crap. Watching movies on your TV is still by far the most popular medium, and if they think the market share of people that have a bd or hd player is small, they should look at the group that has a HT PC.

And this is all ignoring the fact that you're looking at a 30 GB+ download for an HD movie. If I wanted to transfer all my REGULAR DVDs to a hard drive of some kind, I'd need something on the order of 7 TB.

2. Bank to employees Pay it forward Dec 18, 2007, 13:21 Ronin

This sounds exactly like my last employer. My first year there, we got a Christmas bonus equivalent to 1% of our yearly pay. The next year we got $100 and were told to give it away.

Now, I'm for charity. I just want to be in charge of it myself.

Rein said that there is "something special" about playing UT3 on the PS3, and that while the speed of the game has been reduced by about 20%, "it feels just right to be playing it with a controller".

BULL. Playing on a controller will NEVER be as good as a keyboard/mouse.
