only when the 16x9 ratio monitors are commonplace.

And oh what a glorious day that will be.

edit: I hate it when I do that. Pressed stop when I remembered to fix the italics, and it posted two. Sigh.

and I have one thing to say. "Damn you, Microsoft! DAMN YOU!!!"

Ahem. The source of my problem was MSN Messenger. Not that people were logging on, it was just busy doing its own thing. I killed it, and problem solved. I should be able to get at least 1280x1024 now...

I refuse to believe that my computer is subpar. 900 mhz t-bird, 256 meg pc133 cas 2, Radeon 64 meg DDR. Not an uber system anymore, but still. Yet when playing the game, especially in the massive valley, when I turn around quickly, it freezes up for a second, or gets jerky. I'm running it at what I feel is a lower res, 800x600. Anyone else having the same problem.

Other than that, this game, if only for that 16mm sniper rifle (OMG!!!) ROCKS!!!

Is it just me or did the RL not do damage to you in the first game, and now it does? =(

Oh trust me, it hurt you in the first game. More than some other games, too. There's one secret in one of the city levels and the only way to get to it is to rocket jump. It hurts you so much, it's not even worth it.

44. Pass the Geritol...j/k Dec 10, 2001, 22:14 Ronin

OK, first off, anyone who hasn't played completely through Doom and Doom 2 owe it to themselves to haul their asses down to (Insert electronics store here), and pick up the Doom Collectors Edition for 20 bucks ( I(Ultimate), II, and Final), and download the J-Doom mod.

That said, ah the memories. I have to put this in cause no one else has. The beautiful DMaud. Doom was great. doom was excellent, and it scared the shit out of me. It was the only game I would get up an hour early before school (was in like 5th or 6th grade) in order to get some more gaming in. But oh, nothing was funner than hacking the wad file with odd sound effects. Good GOD, I LAUGHED MY FUCKING ASS OFF the first time I heard an imp say (ala Butt Head):

"Hey Baby. Whattya doin'?" (OMG, makes me laugh to this day).

Yes, I can empathize with setting soundcard settings (DMA, IRQ, etc., assuming that's what you're talking about, now that I think about it, you probably aren't), what wonderful times were those.

Though I had no online goodness with Doom, I did with Quake (Quake came out about the time I was really getting serious about gaming). QUAKE multiplayer. Just the words spawn hundreds of memories. Mention CTF and I'm in nostalgic bliss. Oh the hundreds of hours clocked online. For FOUR YEARS, I shit you not, Quake occupied 80-100% of my gaming time. Someone please agree with me when I say no online gaming can match the shear sweat-drenching feverish gameplay of Thunderwalker (or Creeper) CTF with 20+ players. No game since (except maybe Q3 a few times) has forced me to stop every few minutes to wipe the sweat from my hands.

Alas, this is a DOOM forum, I really should get back to the matter at hand. LONG LIVE DOOM! Oh, and Happy B-Day too.

Remember Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,

That reminds me! Someone told me there were going to do a real remake of the Turtles, I mean the real Turtles, before they turned into a kiddy franchise, back when Leonardo used his katanas for what they're supposed to be used for. Based on the original, dark comic books.

209. Geez, don't read the board for a day... Dec 7, 2001, 20:35 Ronin

And look what happens. Nice to see you join the conversation Snappy, was wondering how long it would take.

Ah, where to begin. I guess with accepting my mistakes, which any respectable, mature poster would do (HINT HINT!!!). I was hasty in my locating the population for the UK, so my acknowledgements (sp?) to 62.31, 195.217, and 62.159. And also to 62.159, thank you for the compliment. I take great pride in arguing my point, but I also know when to admit that I'm wrong. Is that a weakness? Hardly, I say to anyone that thinks so.

That's about all for now, (except 205, Cyrezar, you made me lol ) and might I say that this has been a rockin discussion, and it'll be sad to see Blue pull it from the "Popular Threads" (which should be tomorrow, I think).

I compliment you for a good argument, with one exception...
Plus it's probably around 8 million more then in the UK.
Yes, 9 million is a rather large number. But take it in perspective. I got on google again for about a minute, and found what I believe to be a reputable site on UK population: http://bubl.ac.uk/link/u/ukpopulation.htm
According to them, the UK population is in the neighborhood of 20 million.

Ok, math morons. Hit Start (assuming Windows is being used), Programs->Accessories->Calculator. OH MY GOD! 5% of the population of the UK owns a gun!! (all assuming you're on the money with 1 million)

As opposed to the person who agrees 110% with you, I have to say that I agree about 85% with you (from my previous posts, you can understand where the other 15% goes ). Reading the rest of your post was like dejavu. Two years ago when I was attending a boarding academy, the subject of violent video games in the dorm rooms came up (Christian academy). Being more or less the leader of the group (have to throw this in: Most Quake 2 scores ended with Ronin: 32, ...: 3, ...: 0, ...:-4, and so on , not to mention my superior english skills (don't laugh, they're (skills) usually much better when I write important stuff)), I wrote up a one-page single-spaced paper detailing how much these games DID NOT effect us, and why they were actually good for us, citing similar examples that you used.

Anyway.

To 163, good words, and btw, if someone else's figure of 9 million American gun holders is correct, and my rough estimate of the US population is correct (280 million, but if I'm wrong either way, wouldn't make a big difference), that makes for approximately 3.214%. In otherwords, not a whole lot.

156. Re: Us Americans and Re: weapons and oth Dec 4, 2001, 21:59 Ronin

The Taliban could quite feasibly build a nuke. (In fact, just today our government was stating that they believe it to be possible, and that they really aren't sure what the Taliban are capable of) Even if they built one, they wouldn't have the facilities to launch an ICBM. They would bring it to the US by ship probably.

Um, ok. First of all, I did state that I was trying to get away from the nuke issue, cause that isn't the issue, in fact, and I quote myself "But I'm just getting off the point. The point is firearms." Nonetheless, my whole point of the nuke hypothetical was to indicate that even if the Taliban did (have, whatever) create a nuke and one way or another brought it onto American soil (ICBM, suitcase, flock of sea gulls, again, whatever), America would have no qualms about launching in retaliation. I'm not saying this is the best thing for all surrounding countries, but is probably what would happen.

Tell that to the Afganis that defended their country from the Russian invasion. The Russians had tanks, automatic weapons, missiles, etc. The Afghanis had very little heavy weaponry of any kind, yet they managed to drive the Russians out.

Now you're really confusing me. Are you pro American, or anti-American? Or do you just like arguing with me? Oh and as anon@199.80 so thoughtfully pointed out (thanks, btw), the reason why the Afghans repelled Russia was soley due to our aid.

Finally, a rebuttal! Though I would have wished for more intelligence, as your spelling errors and lack of proper capitalizing put you at about 3rd grade.

Anyway.

OK, one point for you. No, no one would be dumb enough to take us on in land combat, but a nuke would certainly do the trick. But as long as we're on the subject of nuclear war, let's form another hypothetical. The Taliban scrapes together enough sand to afford a nuke. They in turn fire that nuke. Shortly after the launch, 50 are headed right back at them. But I'm just getting off the point. The point is firearms. And I'd be willing to bet that just like 225 years ago, if the need would arise, any gun toting American would jump at the chance of defending freedom, though the likelyhood of this happening is very, very, very low.

And you totally missed the reason behind the first hypothetical. Think about it. Would you rather attack someone that could very possible kill you in return, or someone completely without defense? Hmmmm. Possibility of getting shot...no possibility of getting shot.... Don't get me wrong, I have no respect for the intelligence of the common crook, but even a moron with a 50 IQ wouldn't risk their life for one wallet. And like I said about someone breaking in, you don't even have to have a gun loaded to scare a thief off. Common sense dictates that you'll (assuming the role of crook) run your damn ass off at the first sound of a gun being cocked.

Well, whatever. Most everyone on this board is past the decision making point, and is stuck on his or her own opinion (even though it's wrong )

Dammit, I take the time to type a fairly long post, I'd expect at least a little response. Why didn't anyone pick my post apart piece by piece?

Come on, I'm waiting!

Oh wait.

Could it possibly be that what I said makes sense and no one has a sensible comeback? Can't be.... Please spair me the "you made no sense so it wasn't worth the effort." and stop making excuses.

Oh, and I would be refering to #98, for those interesting. Commence pick-apart and flaming.

98. Us Americans Dec 2, 2001, 21:15 Ronin

So there wasn't any sort of revolt when guns were taken away in the UK. Not surprising, as they didn't have to fight off a tyrannical government less than 250 years ago. 250 years may be a long time, but we take our rights very seriously.

For some reason, prohibition just seems to keep popping into my head. What happened when booze was taken away from Americans? Increased crime, and illegally created liqour insued. Expect to see a similar reaction if they try to take away our guns.

Oh, and I'd like say something about the American militia part of this debate. No, I'll be the first to admit that even an army of 9 million gun-toting Americans wouldn't stand a chance against a trained army with tanks, fully automatic weapons, missles, etc. But pair that same militia along side the most powerful military force on the planet (and believe me, many would be willing if liberty were truly threatened), look out.

Yes, sadly, many Americans can't take the blaim for their mistakes. I'm ashamed of many of my fellow citizens. But there are plenty of smart ones too.

Oh, and as far as having unloaded weapons, someone wondered how useful they would be against an intruder. As someone else mentioned, just pointing a gun at someone, fuck, just the sound of a 12-guage being cocked is enough to scare the shit out of burglers.

That's my 8 cents (inflation, you know).

Oh, and I also took 1 minute on google and came up with this: http://www.guncite.com/gun_control_gcdguse.html

So the number of times guns were used in defense is somewhere between 108k and 2.5 million, and the guy that did research says 2 million. So 1 million times is a less than generous statistic by the NRA.

Oh, and one last thing. A hypothetical scenario. You're a mugger on the streets of Phoenix, AZ (a right to carry city). Waiting on the side you see a man approaching. No body around, easy target. Then you watch as he enters the light of a lamp and you see the glint of cold steel holstered on his hip. How likely are you to attack this person? Unless you've got an IQ less than your age, not too fucking likely.

No, #171's post was a response to the pathetic post #170, where said prepubescent punk stated, and I quote:

"its a descent game nothin special."

Good God, in only a six word chunk there's two more egregious errors! Now, I'm not one who goes around picking apart posts for their bad grammar, I just wanted to clear it up for 171 that 170 didn't mean to refer to Descent (which I do too feel is a damn good game). And I also count myself as one who atones for my sins, so: "I am eternally sorry that I misspelled blame. A thousand apologies."

Oh, and here he is explaining himself in his own quaint language:
i didnt mean the game descent you fuks?

Sigh, is there any hope for humanity?

It's not a Descent game, it's RTCW. They are totally different games. I think the Descent franchise is pretty much dead.

Actually, I believe he meant to say decent, as in o.k. But he's a prepubescent punk who can't type straight, don't blaim him, probably got it from his parents.

I'm going to sound like Gray Matter and id's bitch when I say this, but I'm going to go play the most kickass fps I've played in a while. It may not redefine the genre, it may not offer anything particularly new, but that's not why I (and others) bought it. We shelled out our hard earned cash to relive the eternal classic, the grand daddy of fps.

Oh, and besides the severe lack of available ammo, does anyone else feel that the Snooper Rifle is the sweetest sniper rifle of any game? Try it on the Norway level in the fog to see what I mean...

missle base? hmmm, was that the forest mission where you can't set off any alarms? rather pissy level, indeed. A lot of knifing, silenced gunning, using your binoculars until you get the scope again, and waiting till guys have their back turned. Is there a specific spot where you're stuck?
