12) Unrealistic drifting.

As any fan of import racing is, I'm also a fan of drifting. I thought it was a pretty cool feature, one of the redeaming values...until I saw a guy playing it at Best Buy, and drifting an Eclipse.

Eclipses (Eclipsi?) are FWD, with the exception of one trim level, the GSX, which is AWD. You CAN'T drift (in the classic sense) in a FWD car. That mode of play should have only been open to the RWD cars (RX7, Supra, Skyline, 240SX, etc.)

6)No damage model

But none of them are going to happen, except the number of mods and track variety. I have all but lost faith in the NFS series.

Allchin called it part of the ``experience economy,'' in which people will pay for things like being entertained.

Pay to be entertained? Who the hell would do that? /sarcasm

Quboid,

Now there's a perfect example of difference of opinion. I think the Boxster is the worst Porsche ever, but die in exstacy every time I see a 911 Turbo. hehe

Live for Speed is an independantly developed and produced race game. Do a search, they have a free download.

And in response to both your comments about the handling physics, have you ever driven a car from pre-1975? The handling is atrocious! The first cars in the game (the 356) had at most 90 hp.

I understand your points.

Ahumado:

The worst of the series? Did you even play the game? The realism far out-weighed anything they did in the previous games (or any after that), what in God's name made it fail for you?

The only reasons I've received from people who didn't like Porsche Unleashed were these:

1)Only Porsche cars. (yeah? So? Your point being? Porsche is one of the very best high performance manufacturers out there. And it was damn fun to have a first hand witness to their evolution over 50 years)

2) No pursuit mode. (I wasn't terribly happy about this either, but it wasn't enough to make me cry about it)

3) Too realistic. (Riiiiiight. You want too realistic, go play Live for Speed.)

Porsche Unleashed found a happy medium between arcade racing and simulation...a medium that has not been matched since.

17. skills Apr 23, 2004, 11:52 Ronin

what would truly make it a "tuner's" game would be to build a skill system, ala RPGs. For instance, acquiring Welding Skill, so you can make your own turbo exhaust manifolds. Make it so that you have to pay someone else to do something until you build enough skill to do it yourself. Have the ability of having "friends" work on the same car, which would have the effect of boosting both your skills exponentially.

I personally don't have any information on this (not having a LD player myself), but I do have a little bit of capture experience. A good place to start would be to get a video card/capture card with S-Video in, an S-Video cable, and an RCA (composite cable) to mini-plug for audio. As for the software, I would think any good capture software and/or DVD creation software would work.

19. Re: Old Trilogy Apr 20, 2004, 16:09 Ronin

Schnapple, the overall problem with copying anything from Laserdisc is the compression difference...as in LD doesn't use any. One movie fits on 1.5-2 double sided LDs...and LDs are HUGE. As it is, to preserve quality, he's probably going to have to use more than one DD DVD anyway, but I'm not entirely sure.

16. Old Trilogy Apr 20, 2004, 15:12 Ronin

The best way to get the old trilogy is to know someone who still has a laserdisc player and the THX remastered versions for it. Then, when the double density DVD writers come out, you convince him to buy one, and make you copies...

Well, that's how its going to work for me, except the guy is my bro, and he's already planning on getting the burner.

whenever someone options the rights to a game to make a movie out of it, it seems like everyone goes apeshit about "there's no possible way this movie could be good." Granted, there have been plenty of bad game to movie titles *cough MarioBrothersStreetFighterMortalKombat *cough*. But there have been some that weren't bad (Tomb Raider), and at least one that was pretty damn good (Resident Evil).

I guess I'm overly optimistic, but it beats being depressed all the time.

Um...apparently you missed the PR awhile back where John himself stated that Doom 3 would run, albeit slow, on a 1 Ghz CPU, 512MB RAM, and a Radeon 7000 series or GF2. With your setup, you should see 1280x1024, 32-bit, and 4x AA, with 30 fps or more.

1. Visions of the good ol days... Mar 26, 2004, 10:39 Ronin

Maybe this is a return to the old days of DOOM, when you didn't need to develop a whole new engine for a new game, just make a full continuation sequel using the same engine. I for one would not be opposed to that, like a mission pack.

15. Replays in good use... Mar 5, 2004, 14:54 Ronin

Putting in my "hell yes" to bring the replay mode back...also the ability to watch from an opponent's car (last seen in NFS: High Stakes, which was the best in terms of replays and car damage, cause there was no damage in Hot Pursuit. But it had horrible physics).

And here's an excellent example of replays in good use:
http://www.fileplanet.com/files/120000/128080.shtml

Yes, this is a shameless plug for somethign that I did, accept it.
It is, of course, using Need for Speed 5: Porsche Unleashed, the very best EA ever did in terms of physics. My music video showcases both the tight-knit racing aspect, as well as ABSOLUTELY INSANE crashes and flips. That's what NFS is all about.
