This really IS Genius. Makes you wonder why no other Devs have ever implemented the idea.

Doesn't GTA 5 do this?

Were they doing it with cheaters or just griefers?

Both, and they get thier own pools. Cheaters play with cheaters and greifers play with greifers.

And cheater-griefers who do both go off on their own, kind of like how MMORPGs have normal servers, PvP, RP, and the famed RP-PvP, which I play on.

"Thou sonofabitch!"

If this game used the Guild Wars model (buy-to-play, no subscription), I would consider trying it. But since it also has a subscription, I'm out.

Well, until it goes F2P, which might be quite likely.

Subscription does not bother me -- I am not a poor student.

What bothers me is spending hundreds of hours furnishing an online space while paying 8 years of monthly, and then it is all ripped away and closed because they'd rather use the servers for Guild Wars 2 or 3 or whatever.

I can't read crap on that web site on my phone -- clearly it was generated by a chimpanzee who used a web layout tool not cognizant of certain popular phone browsers used by over 50 million people.

12 hours? Good lord... there were far more difficult camps than that :p Journeyman boots camp in OOT was one of my worst experiences... and the fabled Pyzjyn/Glowing Black stone drop cost me 3 or 4 days of my life.

Got my character to level 44... 14 months of my life... got fed up and had a buddy bind me in front of a KOS NPC in Freeport. Spectacular corpse spam suicide... only lasted 4 hours before all of my levels were gone. (Well, down to level 5, couldn't lose levels after that). Pretty harsh death penalty, when you put it perspective.

I recall them stopping losing levels (or some new limit anyway) after a guy killed himself from 50 back down to 20. Your powers scaled back but you didn't lose them. So he was on Rallos Zek/PvP(?) and ran through lowbie zones slaughtering equal-level people because he had more clickies.

Probably their stupidist design decision was mana users meditating with their spellbook in their face -- build a lovely, newfangled 3D game thrn make people spend most of it not able to see the 3D. And why? For a nominal gameplay "feature" of maybe a monster will wander up and konk you on he head.

So much would have made it DOA today, and I don't mean things like corpse recovery.

Ahh, EQ, you evil son of a bitch. How many days of my life were thrown away punching alligators in the face and running from Sand Giants?(Monks ruled)

One of the greatest memories of my video game life was when I killed my first Sand Giant solo in EQ.

Probably the worst video game memory I have is also from EQ, camping the Beholder's zero weight bag for my monk for like 12 hours straight before I quit and uninstalled EQ forever.

So many cool aspects to Everquest, so many horrible design decisions, in hindsight at least.

The sand giants were level 35 IIRC. I solo'd my first with my level 16 necro way back when.

No, it's true! I stumbled across one that had a sliver of life left -- someone had fought it and died, but their final blow sent it into flee mode.

I sent the pet in to attack, and it chased it. I was worried the giant would heal faster than my pet's rare non-wiff would chew away that sliver.

Eventually the pet killed it and I got two yellow bubs of xp -- the whole hog.

I would have loved to have used it while flying around my City of Heroes base before it shut down. I tried with a different utility but waited to the last day and couldn't get it working right.

Correction, the joyness of grouping is what they should be concerned with. Then the XP just falls out naturally.

Other than it being a fairly standard MMO.

The biggest issue (and most SP Blue's posters won't know this) is when grouping. Running missions in a group imo is a nightmare, even if you play tightly as a group all the time. When you aren't in total synch and you cannot just tell the system you want to be in synch. You then can be in different phases, you will be invisible to other players (you see their marker but not their person), you cannot share with them to have them join you etc. I haven't played an online game this restrictive and really for me is going to be the showstopper above all others.

The game should make it that whoever is leader, you are always in their phase, if you done the part before or haven't, you should still be in their phase instance able to assist, no completion credit, but be able to assist. Just weird.

Tera Online completely borked the questing system -- run-of-the-mill quests, about 90% were not sharable because they were all part of long chains which you must do the previous ones.

So you go into a new area, unless someone else is bramd new there, ypu can't group because they're already up the chain.

I wish companies would stop this. Who the hell cares if you start mid-chain? The damned rewards aren't any kind of great thing that must be forbidden to someone who missed the previous quests.

The XP rate is what the game developers should be concerned with, not that someone might "abuse" a blue-reward endquest by skipping the 8 previous requests in the chain. They still need XP somehow anyway.

These are the very first letter in MMORPG -- making grouping easy. A group finder utility is useless if it's hard to share quests.

The debate is really about who pays for and who profits from the increasingly elaborate infrastructure required to make the internet do something it was never designed to do in the first place: stream high-speed video.

The consumer pays for it and the broadband and content providers profit from it. There that was easy. I also assume the content providers are paying for some sort of connection/hosting as well. It sounds like broadband companies want an ever increasing revenue without having to invest in infrastructure, and who wouldn't, but that's just not a possibility.

This. My connection is between and my ISP. If they are not charging enough, charge me more. Do not threaten both me and Netflix to try to extort some of the money I pay to Netflix, which is between me and Netflix.

I'vr been drooling for a sandbox game since the original design for the flop Horizons, which, IIRC, included full 3D travel, air, underwater, **and underground** via tu.neling -- you could hog out your own tunnels and rescape land.

Also, City of Heroes was on to something with both their superbase construction kit and their mission generator, where you could design missions and all the little bad guys in them.

Star Wars Galaxies was most of the way there, with player cities, but lacked content generation, so died the same death. Eve generates content by player-controlled (and warrable-over) systems by the thousands.

It's shocking something like SW:The Old Republic took the cheap way out of shoving animations around a landscape, nothing more.

Why would they make him a "good thief"? For the same reason Dungeons and Dragons renamed the Thief class the Rogue class -- to avoid accusations they're teaching your kids to be thieves (or, Heaven forbid, an assassin.)
