Wait, so you can't play if the uPlay servers are down? Giant Bomb did a quick look of both the PC and 360 versions the other day when the servers were down and while you did have to wait for the connection to time out when you ran the game, you were still able to play. Is that different with the release version?

That most definitely sucks, but I'm sure that space will be filled by a different company. Some actual competition would only lead to good things.

This isn't like making cars. Processors require huge research departments that spend billions. There's a reason there are only a few CPU makers in the world, basically Intel and AMD, and ARM is dying. Motorola let their Power PC architecture die. No one is going to risk billions to go up against Intel, which has slayed all comers.

Sorry, did you just say ARM is dying...? You mean the company's who licensed architecture powers basically every modern smartphone, tablet and the vast majority of set top boxes? AMD is hurting big time right now, maybe you reversed the acronyms. ARM's killing it right now and some are saying it's Intel's next big competition.

Would be nice if before he started working on the Mac version and the sequel that he made the PC version not a buggy mess. I still experience massive slowdown, bad collision detection crashes and Steamworks support is still not working. Finish one game you've asked for money for before the next please.

Long story short, he's returning it for an Alienware laptop. And he's already looking at replacing his iPhone for an Android, etc... Too many problems with Apple products. You wouldn't notice the issues if you replace them every year, but if you don't, it's bad. Laptops that overheat easily, now screens that all but self destruct, home buttons that break after a year rendering the iPhone useless, etc... Add to it the crappy customer service now and there isn't any reason to buy Apple.

Well, there's fashion which is the primary reason their products are selling the volumes they are right now. Not that Apple's going to crash and go anywhere any time soon but their current growth path is not sustainable, it's a fashion trend.

If you want to see where their quality is these days, take a look at a Twitter feed called @applenag. It's a guy who has been a loyal Apple user since the early 80s and has multiple iPhones, iPads and Macs. And he deals with issues constantly that are common among power users of any platform. The difference being that most Apple fanbois sweep them under the rug or brush them off, lest they tarnish the image of their favourite perfect company, this guy states them all plainly (though I admit, I'm sure he over embellishes some of them for dramatic effect). Apple products have the same kinds of issues related to quality in both hardware and software as most other electronics do. They're not worse but they aren't nearly as better as the company, their fanbois (and especially their prices) would have you believe.

There's like 2 billion people on the planet with a cell phone so with a bit of marketing you think that would be a viable way to go. Shrug

I dunno, everything I've read lately suggests mobile's becoming as hit driven as consoles. 2 billion people own a cell phone but of those that are buying games, 99% of them buy Angry Birds and maybe one or two other things from the top charts on the App Store and never bother looking for anything else. The barrier to entry's a lot lower but these days, you have about as much chance of having a hit mobile game as winning the lottery, unless you're publisher backed of course. For Eurocom and many other devs, it was probably either this or go under so at least it gives them a means to stay alive. I just remember a year ago when people said that nobody could fail in mobile and social games. How quickly things change...

I understand they're up against it and there probably isn't much work in the console space right now but geez, another big developer entering the crowded mobile market where chances of success are even less? Good luck to them but I wonder what chance they really have. I mean, in the last two weeks I think I've read 3 or 4 stories of small teams that had highly anticipated mobile releases come out and went under after because no one bought them.

Not that Sony isn't hurting right now but Fitch was also one of the credit agencies that rated a whole ton of sub prime mortgages as AAA, as well as many of the investment banks peddling in them, practically up until the day they collapsed.

If Brian Farrell is still in as CEO (and he is), the core of their issues has still not been dealt with. Most of THQ's current situation (and most notably the uDraw fiasco) can be laid squarely on his shoulders. He's bad at his job, he should have been run out on a rail years ago.

Yep, I just bought one of the last 256GB 830 drives I could find over the weekend to replace me second OCZ Synapse that died (don't ever buy one of those by the way). From what I've read, the 840 is actually slower and it's long-term reliability is questionable. A free Far Cry 3 would have been nice but I'll take the superior product.

Betanews loves to create "clicks through controversy" articles. This definitely seems like one of them.

Dades wrote on Nov 17, 2012, 20:24:
There's nothing speculative about it, they're commenting about the existing restrictions. It's all laid out in the store and certification guidelines. Their main concern is that if you don't want to use the store or microsoft refuses to accept your app for some reason, there is no other way to deliver a "Metro" app to users without running an enterprise version of Windows 8.

You are correct about that, I should have been clearer. The point I was addressing was the large number of people who are taking Metro's very existence as proof positive that the desktop is going to be gone soon and I just don't buy that. I don't care if Metro exists as long as anyone who doesn't want to use it can use the open desktop instead. PC gamers understand how to use the desktop, the likes of Croteam don't have to put their stuff on Metro to reach their intended audience.

As someone who works in corporate IT, I can tell you that if the desktop ever goes away, it will be a VERY long time before it does. As important as consumers are to Microsoft, corporate is their bread and butter and corporate will never adopt Metro as it is now. If Microsoft can't get corporate customers on board with an all-Metro Windows (and they'll be consulting with those customers extensively), it won't happen, I guarantee it. As sweet as a 30% cut of $0.99 apps are, Microsoft also makes a ton off those base license costs from Windows and they aren't going to risk driving their volume customers to Linux or worse, Apple. Believe me, I understand the concerns about Metro that people have but writing obituaries for the desktop is just ridiculous at this stage.

I'm seeing a lot of "gasp!" and "the sky is falling!" regarding Windows 8's "Metro" or RT apps...

I suppose it wouldn't be so shocking if Microsoft said "hey, it's like iOS. Get it?"

Because that's what it is. It's a walled garden. You can't install whatever you'd like on an iOS device, and yet, somehow Apple can't sell enough of them. People are eating them up. Did you think Microsoft *wasn't* going to want a piece of this?

IOS is not OSX.

Apple is not trying to put IOS on Macintosh Desktop computers.

What part of this are you not getting?

Sure, they have added some OPTIONAL IOS-like features to OSX (Mac app store, App launcher that looks like IOS launcher, and access to iCloud) But NONE of that is forced on you, like Metro is with Windows 8. OSX remains to be it's own Desktop OS.

Anyone who thinks this exact kind of thing isn't coming to OS X is kidding themselves. Microsoft may have done it first but make no mistake, Apple wants in on this too. They can wait longer because they have a monopoly on the hardware market for their platform and have managed to convince people to overpay for hardware because tons of people just own Macs because they're fashionable but they want their cut of app sales on every platform just like Microsoft does.

I don't run Windows 8 and don't know if I will but I still think a lot of the hype from the likes of Croteam and Valve is based on pure speculation and not evidence. Anybody remember that article from the New Zealand security researcher that screamed how Windows Vista was full of DRM and was basically going to be an OS that Hollywood would be able to cripple at will and which would severely limit what you could do with it to support DRM? Yeah, remember how that also turned out to be complete bullshit and the guy was shoved into obscurity as a result? Panic without evidence is often unfounded.

Not saying I like Microsoft's direction (which is squarely following something Apple started and has been practically considered heroic for) but I wager if Windows 8 isn't selling (I've seen lots of people saying this without one person linking to an article with actual cited sales data), they will re-evaluate their strategy. I hated Vista too death and so did everyone else but it was the fastest selling version of Windows for its game, though granted, that was before tablets and the Apple fashion trend. Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending Microsoft or Windows 8, though it probably sounds it. I'm just saying it might be worth laying off the panic until there's something worth panicing about, beyond what a guy like Newell says, who has a vested interest in making sure he controls the PC software market instead of Microsoft. If this gets worse in Windows 9, I'll happily switch to Linux, assuming it isn't still the massive nightmare that it is now.

I don't care that Call of Duty succeeds. They're competent enough games if only that. What I hate is the amount of amazing titles that struggle or fail because people won't broaden their horizons beyond one or two yearly franchises. It's as much a failing of consumers as anything else. If Call of Duty didn't come out every year, I don't think those people would start discovering and buying a raft of new, more innovative titles. It's a shame.

Well... I hope ATi gets sold off to someone other than nVidia. Even though I mostly run nVidia... the last thing we need is for them to become a monopoly.

I doubt that would even get past regulators to be honest. I thought I read an article recently that said that ATI was one of the only parts of the company actually turning a profit right now so I bet there will be plenty of suitors willing to pick it up. I hope AMD can turn things around. They gave Intel a good run for their money once and they need competition.

In this case, a 47% crash is only $1.40, so it's not quite as dramatic as the percentage would suggest. Still, I'd be surprised if THQ survives into 2014.

They've also dropped to under the market cap required to continue being listed on the NASDAQ. They already did a 10:1 reverse stock split in order to maintain compliance once and they can't do it again. Unless they either sell the company or something happens to cause a rally, they'll end up facing delisting again. I really don't know how they can recover from this. They're basically now trying to shepherd their current titles to completion with what they have left on their line of credit (which is something like $60M I think) and $36M in cash. This is to finish development, market them (which usually costs at least as much as development), plus they have to figure out how to make titles for next-gen where budgets will go up even more.

Apparently WWE 13 is selling well though (and it came out too late in the quarter to reflect in these earnings) and their versions of Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy usually do well with casuals, plus many seem to think SR3 Full Package will sell well and that's going to be a much higher margin item for them. I dunno though, I don't see how that carries them well into next year though.
