I am a Christian (and a Bush supporter) and play almost exculively First Person Shooters. Quake and Doom (and HalfLife) are incredible games and have always thought they would make great movies and live action effects if done right.
In answer to the question posed by The Truth in #41, I do not believe the DOOM franchise supports satanic following. Crypts, neogothic architecture, special effects, and THE REJECTION of demonic seperiotiy is what Doom is all about. Your mission in this game is to destroy demons and other hellish things while trying to save your friends. No doubt the demons and stuff look really cool, but it certainly won't make 18 yr. old Jimmy start worshiping Satan.
So I don't buy for a second that they are trying to appeal to "middle america," "bush supporters," or "those christians" by changing the plot to viruses. These people who would find fault in watching a movie about a Marine killing demons will not go see a movie called Doom, even it is about a biological experiment gone wrong or whatever.
Doom is violent, and is meant to be violent. The story is simple and straightforward. It is nothing new, but I think visually it would be impressive as a movie. Instead they are going the bio-route, which I believe is a big mistake. But don't blame the religious folks. Blame hollywood and id software.

Lol! I usually don't read the forums here, but whenever the words "half life" or "doom III" or "President Bush" come up, the blood pressure soars! Its so funny seeing these guys get so worked up!
Oh, amd BTW, Professional, that is fine if you don't like the game. But don't bitch about it being too short. If you didn't explore the whole game, I recommend you go through again, without sprinting out your aux power. If not, well, enjoy yourself a nice RTS. Either way, it is hard to see how you can enjoy FPS's and not enjoy HL2.

Everyone look at Professsional. He is so cool, he beat the game in 10 hours on the hardest difficulty. I feel like a n00b taking my time, replaying certain sequences and playing with the AI/dynamics.

I don't think people that post these kinds of messages are single player FPS gamers. What you are talking about is either a multiplayer game (with unlimited replayability) or a RTS. Single Player FPS games are going to be pretty linear and will be completable in a weekend. But just like a movie, you wait for years for it to come out, then it is over in 2 hours. Does that make it a bad movie? I think not. I haven't finished HL2 yet, but I am really looking forward to playing it again. It is FUN. I don't care much for story, so getting the same story is fine by me. Hell, I don't even know what the story is this first time through!

MEMORY LEAK! |

Well, HL2 gives me memory leak errors when trying to load. Somehow I finally got into the menu, then when I tried to load a level, no dice. Crash with Memory Leak errors. GREAT.

CRAP! When I load it, it gets to the loading screen, hangs for a minute or two, then I hear two Windows alert noises. Then if I hit Enter, I crash to desktop. DAMMIT!

Don't jump to conlcusions about this news; speaking as a developer, engines can be implemented at various stages of the project. What I bet happened was that too many resources were being put into doing realistic physics, so they decided to hire an external company to develop their new physics engine. I wouldn't take this as meaning they are just now starting off from square 1.
Now, that is not to say it will come out in months or anything.... We really have been waiting too long for this game and I really don't see how this "anticipation" is helping their potential sales. While there are no "George will make you his bitch" ad campaigns, remember Daikatana....

Many of you complain and whine so much about this whole flashlight thing. One of the big selling points of Doom is the new dynamic lighting technology. If you constantly had a light (or even worse, nightvision) the whole backbone of the game would be lost. It was a game design decision, not some overlooked detail.
And if you want to look around with a flashlight, well now you can with this mod. I really don't understand why there is always fussing back and forth about this game. If you want the light, download the mod (there have been times I wish I could use my pistol and my light). If you want to play the game with a more suspensful approach don't get the mod. End of story.

What I think would be cool is a shooter that takes place during another war, preferably one that is more in the past. Like what about the civil war, or revolutionary war?

I can certainly see the irony in you insulting me for having a Star Wars handle and an affinity for comic books when you (just as I am) are posting to a discussion thread of a videogame website on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.
Oh, the children of Blues Discussion boards.... I had almost forgotten why I stopped posting here. Not one thread ends up discussing games.

Thanks Tanto, its good to see someone who thinks like me! Yeah I thought the dream sequences were a really cool idea, especially when you go through the very first part of the game again and end up killing your wife. But the running through the halls and stuff was too tedious.
As for the facial expressions, have you noticed that when someone dies in Max Payne, their faces frown and eyes close? That's enough for me I guess.
But I TOTALLY agree with the third person observation. I mean it is really rare when a thirdperson shooter actually DOES what you want - allows you to see what's going on, to control the camera a little, but also let the game know when to choose a good angle. Heavy Metal FAKK was the first 3rd person shooter that controlled very well, and Max Payne fortunately was likewise very responsive. Complex dodging coupled with precision aiming is something I think far too many take for granted!
Hah,I know I said before that I don't like so much pessisism in this industy (well with the gamers at least) but there isn't much out there now that is too original (I'm waiting for HL2, Doom3, Tribes, etc), so I'm playing all these older games again. They really are entertaining, and I'm getting more gaming for that $40 - 50 I shelled out each a few years ago!
Good games to replay (well ones I am right now at least): -Outcast -Diablo II -Max Payne
And of course, a little GTA3 is always fun!
Again, all just my humble opinion

Man, I thought Max Payne was one of the greatest games ever released, I'm suprised so many people here don't give it more praise. I just got through playing it again, and while the SP was short and linear, it is a very very fun game. And to those who thought the writing was bad, what part of it was bad? I thought it was superb writing, especially with all of the clever metaphors in the dialog.
The graphics are nice, the engine is great, and the game is FUN. I played it twice through in the past couple of weeks again, and I really don't care if it is the same story line. I don't understand why people say that linear games don't have any replay value. I mean people love watching the same movies over and over; I think a select few games like Half-Life and Max Payne can be played over and over and still be just as fun.
And I really don't think bullet time is a gimmick - the game is very hard (on the harder diffuculty settings), and effective use of bullet time is essential (and fun!). Man I really wish gamers didn't have such pessimistic views about games all the time. Every thread on this site has some rant about "how much xxx game sucks," when (IMHO) they don't deserve it.
