Wow yeah, hard to say who would/should/could take GOTY.
Oh, wait a minute, no it's not because even Skyrim is just more of the same, with a coat of paint. I'm still running along rocks and hiding behind a bowl to steal a greatsword from the only other person in the room. I love the dwemer structures, I love the incredible thought to the landscape, and everything. Skyrim is my personal favorite as well for everything that makes it amazing, including the dragons, of which no fps game has had since Quake (they never made release, but they were there goddamnit).
Deus Ex had story, cohesive structure, and a tight path the story wove through that structure. It was a really smart game. Sadly, the schwag was shit, and I think schwag makes or breaks GOTY status.
My vote for GOTY? To MW3 for (hopefully) finally killing the franchise with its sameness. Finally fans woke the fuck up and cried bullshit, and for that, GOTY is deserved.
Note: This message is laden with extreme amounts of sarcasm.
The Dwarven ruins in this game are awesome! How many folks have really explored the Dwemer underground? It's immense! Detailed! Connected! You can roam for hours and using various buildings entrances and exits, find your way across Skyrim! It's incredibly well thought out. Absolutely amazing! |

Lockpicking requires no perks. Just a steady hand, and cool nerves. I pick master locks and the only points I've ever had in lockpicking are those that are generated by lockpicking.
(bump the tumbler, don't just turn it, so you don't break picks)
Now having said that, it's funny to me that once upon a time you could start your character then make your way to the local plantation where you'd get a jinxing dagger that would break the gameplay for the next few hours, because it was so overpowered, and that was out in the open. Nowadays I've picked all sorts of high level locks and all I get is steel hammers. Everything in the game world seems governed by the leveling system, preventing me from gaining any advantage by my thiefsy ways.
The new system really makes a concerted effort to pigeon hole you and if you're not using trainers to focus yourself, I suspect you'd find yourself too focused.

Granted, the perks are pretty handy but they aren't essential. My Destruction skill is only level 20 and I'm already destroying enemies with my flamethrower. Bows seem a bit overpowered too, as I'm killing most enemies in one hit with the sneak shots and my archery is only level 30. This is on Expert difficulty, too. The perks are pretty damn essential. For one-armed for example the first perk is a 5-long tree of "adds 20% damage." If I reach the cap without putting anything into that, how effective would I be with one-armed weapons without it? I would be doing half damage, essentially.
Similarly the lockpicking pretty much requires you to get the perks, at least so far. And since the perks require a skill level you can't just perk your way to awesome, you have to devote time to certain skills so when your level-up comes you can get the perks you want.
I think it's a brilliant system honestly, and encourages you to pick a role MUCH more than Morrowind or Oblivion did. |

QFT! Sing it brotha! Oh Caaannnaaadaaaa!
Obviously this is the difference between Canada and the US. In Canada, requiring something like that is a violation of the employment and hiring act. Plus in Canada, despite being prolific at having FB accounts, privacy of the individual still reigns supreme, because it's protected in codified law.
To plenty of people, having a FB account means that it's a cry for attention, because you don't get enough of it. Requiring Facebook is mental! Only in America. |

I'll take the completely open ended, first person, questathalon over the bottle necked, top down, clicktastic drudgeathon.
If I wanted to watch a top down epic that would keep me engauged, I'd befriend some midgets and follow them around town (I smell reality show).
Diablo sucks balls, always has. Fuck Blizzard and their auction house. Enjoy bidding real money on fake swords and shields you sad little monkeys. |

Dear Polyphony, I stopped caring after Dirt 2 shipped. Fuck off.
Nascar sucks balls, grass and dirt aren't made of ice. Cars CAN travel on grass just fine at speeds below fourty km/h, especially when they have regular, non-racing tires (y'know, the 'bad' tires), and a hundred km/h should not feel like fifty km/h (seriously, wtf).
Streaming television shows about driving, into the game? Why? Because the driving in the game is so fucking depressing that I'll have to forget my sorrows watching The Stig? I'll be so frustrated by this retarded concept of 'realism' and 'simulation' that I'll just want the escapism from the.. game?
While I'm sure the staff at Polyphony (and some of the trolls around here) know best, some of us believe in LAN gaming, and there seems to be a complete fucking lack of it in GT. Strangely, I get a lot of time with friend on the Dirt series, Grid, and even lesser known titles.
In short, GT6 and all subsequent Gran Turismo games really need to focus on one thing. Instead of real to life, perfect to scale, satellite imaged, staff measured/documented, tracks; instead of extremely detailed interiors, with true to life modeling, trim effects and sound; instead of focusing on the aesthetic, how about focusing on what makes a game good. Gameplay. Fucking Game Play. Hey Yamauchi, call Codemasters and get some. |

They should call it the "Never Again" Anthology. The collection of games that no company, publisher or developer will ever recreate because it just takes too much chutzpa. |

I guess until Bethesda has their own license to print money (an mmo, a steam like service, etc) we can expect to support them through DLC and expansions.
There's merit in both camps insofar as DLC value is concerned. I liked the way Rockstar managed the DLC for Red Dead Redemption. |
