60. Re: Demo May 6, 2004, 00:49 NotOneOfUs

Besides Randy Smith leaving the company,
The same one who was one designer among many on the prior Thief games?
He's noted as a "key" designer of both the original Thief games and was the Project Lead of Thief 3. Also, he is, I believe, the fourth Thief 3 designer to resign during the making of this game. Even with the generic "have other things I want to do, it was great working here!" statements, I can't help but think something not-nice is going down at Ion Storm.

the focus on consoles
Not necessarily a bad thing. There are some great games on consoles.
I agree. I love consoles, but their focus on consoles make this a console game, and there are several limitations with consoles, and those limitations do not transfer well over to PC.

Only if it is an actual conversion, a console-to-PC port is a no-no.

Invisible War
Not a bad game in my opinion, but . . .
Honestly, I haven't played the full version and my opinion is based off the wonderful demo (even with the tweaks). I've heard from a few friends, though, that the game is indeed good but with disappointing ending(s).

people's accounts of Harvey Smith's displeasure at E3 (and his recent departure).
You mean the guy that (I seem to recall) some here have accused of being at fault for the alleged abomination of Invisible War? Seems like that's a good thing...
I remember reading someone's E3 2002 and 2003 experiences with Harvey Smith, saying that in 2002 (which, as we remember, showed all the excellence of Invisible War) Harvey was very excited with the game. Come E3 2003, though, along with the arrival of the terrible HUD, he said Harvey seemed less happy. Course, I'm just taking someone I've never met's word, but looking at how everything has turned out I'm inclined to believe this.

Yeah, as far as I can see there's really no reason for everyone to be whining so much. There's no reasonable basis for the conclusion that Thief 3 is going to be a bad game (no basis, that is, other than everyone's totally unreasonable expectations).
Besides Randy Smith leaving the company, the focus on consoles, Invisible War and people's accounts of Harvey Smith's displeasure at E3 (and his recent departure).

Even assuming it does suck, most normal people out there don't even get so worked up about disappointments in life that are truly significant. All this tells me one thing - if you're complaining about the quality of a game that hasn't even come out yet, you need to get a life. Even if you're complaining about Deus Ex 2, you need to get a life! Complain about something really significant, like the current administration in the U.S. that is making us all look like barbaric fools.
That's nice, but this is a gaming site and these are gaming forums. On a political forum or even a general forum I, too, would expect discussions on that topic.

Judging by the name I'd say they're targeting this game for Goths and Buddhists.

Next, they announced TF2 is moved to HL's engine, as a stand alone release. No screenshots of it were given for a long time.

Then, they release TFC, saying it was both a promotional item for TF2, and TFS practice mod to prep it for TF2

Hmm, I could've sworn they were planning on releasing TF2 as an retail-product add-on a few months after HL came out. Remember all the desert camo screenshots? Later, they decided to make it a standalone product on an updated/modified/next generation HL1 engine, which was the last screenshots and videos we got to see of it.

Nobody is twisting your arm to buy or even play Painkiller. Don't like the requirements or limitations, then don't buy it and stop your whining over something you havent even payed for.

I'm looking at my PainKiller box right now, and I see nothing that says my specific DVD-ROM and CD-RW will not work with this game. I also see nothing about virtual drives or debuggers. I'd very much appreciate them telling me what is required to play the game I bought.

Toronto company dreams of heavenly returns with new computer game Painkiller.

When I read that I thought they meant game returns (to the store), due to the wonderful copy protection it has.

The one thing I'm bumming about at the moment is there aren't enough people plying PK multi at the moment.

Maybe that's because they can't play the fucking game?

Ba-ZING!

I'd like to thank DEViANCE for making a nice no-cd crack so that, you know, people can actually play the game.

Here's the edited (removed the obviously illeget key generator) file:

The copy protection scheme used on Painkiller (Macrovision SafeDisc) is commonly used in the game's industry on major titles. It and other such systems are primarily to prevent the casual copying of games which ultimately hurts everyone, developers, publishers, and end consumers alike.
Then tell me, rstevenson, why I could hop on eMule the other day and find multiple ISOs of Painkiller yet can't play the game I not only pre-ordered, but also paid overnight shipping for? It seems like the only ones being affected are the legitimate customers, as the copy protection is doing jack shit to even curve piracy.

The story goes on to speculate about Warren Spector's possible participation in the design of a console multiplayer action game set in the Deus Ex world.

You have got to be fucking kidding me.

I can't believe all you losers played this game. Does it give you enough time to lick off your cheeto encrusted fingers as you take breaks to watch the end of your latest star trek reruns on UPN?

I don't like Star Trek, but I love Myst, so you lose.

LOSER!

Is it just me or do these forums get stupider everyday?

It's just the internet in general, sir.

I don't like the idea of this "timed-trial," assuming it's 'Two hours and then you can't play it again' and not like the old timed-demos like GTA1 had (where you had, like, five minutes and then it's over. Which, then, you could restart the game and play it again for another five minutes).

I prefer to be able to play my demos over and over to get a feel for the game. While I admit two hours is a good amount of time, I like to really get into the game to see if I'm going to plunk down my cash for it. So up with normal demos, down with timed!

It's being done by Gray Matter. If their single-player portion of Return to Castle Wolfenstein was a show-off of their results, then stay as far away as you can from this CoD add-on.

I suck terribly at RTS games even though I love 'em so much. I'm sure I won't have to worry about that with Gas Powered Games' RTS as the game will practically play itself!

Thanks nin and Bronco, I'll check those out when I get home.

While my computer does run rather hot, I'm pretty sure it's not a heat issue (unless BF:V somehow makes my computer hotter faster than UT2k4 %)).
