News Comments > Half-Life 2 Imminent?
86. Re: No subject Jul 29, 2004, 06:55 Yakumo

no, large amounts of content was stolen, a playable early alpha in fact, it looked like it was taken from a very unfinished version of the 1st e3 demo, i saw it at a mini lan, it had most of the bits from the video shown, but objects missing with big red 'error' models or something instead in many places and tons of bugs, and the lan peeps noticed several differences between the vid and alpha, so we thought the claims of it being what valve had jsut b4 sept 30th were total BS.

everyone who saw it all thoghut it was a great shame it had been stolen, but it was good PR, as it ran so well on the crappy box some guy was playing it on, and looked so damn promising, same as the doom3 alpha, i'd be shocked if anyone was stupid enough to feel anything other than desperation to buy the full game after seeing them.

can't wait to buy the game but DOOM3 comes first \o/

News Comments > No Win98 DOOM 3
142. No subject Jul 28, 2004, 07:51 Yakumo

all this bitching about win98 and i'm genuinly shocked no-ones yet mentioned the 49 day practically hard coded uptime limit (did they jsut ignore bug as 2k/xp were out or is there actually patch now?, not that anyone actually doing aNYTHING on 98 would be able to keep it running that long anyway)

and DLL HELL!

no really, having to reinstall your OS very 3-6 months to stop it CRAWLING is absolutely ideal for home users knowing sfa about computing.

2k/xp is truly the way to go for all MS users, get over it.

I've worked as a comp/net tech since win3.1, having to deal with 98 or even worse, ME, just makes your stomach crawl when your out on a job, a significan't number just can't be dealt with in the end whatever without a reinstall, and they are almost ALWAYS problems that simply just don't happen at ALL on 2k/xp. hell, just trying to trace the problem in the first place, or recover files, on 98 more often than not crashes the machine so you have to start all over again.

and that ntfs v's fat32 debate, you saw the comparison page and surmised that the home user wouldn't care for ntfs? so you missed the recoverability rating then? dealing with disk problems, SO much better with ntfs..your MUCH more likely to get your data back.

did i miss a HL demo no. 2 or something? I seem to remmeber the HL2 demo was definately in the game, ending jsut after you've got to the surface, after a big lift, you run past/shoot the first human soldiers you meet, and duck down into a big air vent, where the troops start rapelling down from the helicoper, then it faded to black.

wheereas in the full game you wander through the vents and i think fairly shortly get to the first big giant 3 tentacled monster that reacts to sound, trapped in the missile silo.

optimising...lol, carmak wrote the book on optimizing. (it's big and black and i forget the title :p) there's only so much you can do to a texture without loosing quality, that's the point of the high quality modes, you don't loose the quality, so you can't compress any more. TGA's for high rez textures take space, then having to store normal maps, bump maps, whatever else for each one increases the memory load. (just assuming d3's using tga textures, it could be several other non lossy formats, but i like TGA's)

everyone into gaming knew d3 was comming, and frankly everyone was expecting it to any system of the time, now it's gold most are in fact jstu plain stunned it even scales down to still be playable on gf3's or gf4mx's.

would it make you feel better if we patch the code so the ultra mode is removed, and we rename high to ultra so you just never know what improvmeents the uncompressed texture detail has :p

hows about 3 years down the line when you've upgraded, wouldn't you be happy to see things not only run faster but look better too?

anyway, face it, id practically drive the entire industry themselves, people winging about their amazingly powerfull card not getting more than x FPS has happened with EVERY SINGLE id release.

this is why people wait for game releases before purchasing new hardware.

if you waited and waited till you could wait no more as d3 hadn't gone gold yet, well, it's a shame, but frankly tough, if d3 was the game you were waiting for then you should have had more patience you should have known the risk you ran.

8. 512mb cards.. Jul 26, 2004, 16:23 Yakumo

I was saying jsut a month or so ago that this was going to be happening, when people were arguing that 512mb on a video card was 'ridiculous' and 'would never be used, we don't even use the 128mb fully on cards today'

ps.
yay \o/ DOOM III
can't wait =)

hopefullky shouldn't be an issue really, you'd have an outer bounding box/elipse, and only start calculating lower more CPU intensive checks (down to the pixel level) if something first goes through that.

unless carmaks found some special new uber way of doing things, wouldn't suprise me if there was some GPU trick you could use..

32. Re: WTF??? Jul 20, 2004, 04:36 Yakumo

Man, this video is beyond weak! The arm and gun looked absolutely HORRID! Except for the water ripples and barrels flying, i thought i was watching just an enhanced version of condition zero or some shit.

funny you should say that, COS THATS WHAT IT IS, and what it's MEANT to be, no-ones claimed otherwise.

CS:source is NOT cs:2, it's jsut a *PORT* of the old CS code to the source engine, with a few tweaks here and there to take advantage of some of that.

70. Re: Darn Monitors Jul 18, 2004, 09:27 Yakumo

32 bit colour is 24bit colour with an 8 bit alpha channel.
so, if your monitor can do 24bpp, it can do 32bpp.

you guys need to diferentiate between what is your monitors limitation, and your graphics cards.

not disapointed in the past no, but this is the first time id have done a game without releasing a test or demo before the product itself (not that i don't think it'll be great, just obviously would have liked to be playing the demo allready... :p )

and NO the warezed alpha does NOT count before people start arguing that one.

on multiplayer : http://www.ampednews.com/?page=articles&id=1379

though someone on a forum has pointed out that at quakecon it did NOT have strafe jumping, but they had heard that it was added after.

and id have confirmed it's definately client/server now, so joining mid-game, rejoining, shouldn't be a problem.

29. dvd... Jul 15, 2004, 06:25 Yakumo

hmmm, i had recently changed my pre-order too as gameplay.co.uk
offered "Doom 3 - Deluxe Limited Edition (DVD Rom)"
they stated te DVD version would be out a little before the CD here, which i wasn't sureabout, but i did beleive that there would BE a DVD.

as stated allready, several games are DVD only here, a trend i hope continues.. any half decent games pc has a DVD drive these days, and they are being used for NOTHING (unless you have a DVD-rw, or friends with one) , most have settop DVD players for movies..

not sure i'd blame piracy, though the publishers will, as xbox / ps2 etc all get pirated too..
biggest prob atm is useless PC anti-piracy programs cutting heavilly into the publishers profit margins for 0 gain :p

but all this has been said by many, many times..

interesting this games got lots of PR, even won Tom's best of show for FPS, and no shots or clips anywhere....
