Apparently Gordon was doing "something" between Half-Life 1 and 2, and what that was exactly is something Valve is keeping a VERY tight-lipped about.

As for Gina.. IIRC, she's in the COOP missions for the PS2 edition of Half-life.. I'm still trying to find a copy of it now that I have a PS2

Stupid console exclusive missions

Actually, my PC Game subscription ran out two issues after I renewed it a year ago, so I refuse to give them any more money.. (Seriously, I sent in my payment, got the next issue with NO renewal stuff on it, and then the issue after that was plastered with "This is your LAST CHANCE TO RESUBSCRIBE!!!1111" Bloody wankers)

Anywho, I just read some scans online.. Really good article though, much better than the CGW one.. (Of course, that's 9 pages vs 4.. Not much of a comparison )

Sincerely,
Jeremy Dunn

First of all, http://collective.valve-erc.com/index.php?go=q1_or_q2 explains what engine Half-Life uses.. Not a big issue, but it still bugs me when people say it was the Quake2 engine.

Secondly, Half-Life's story is a bit more complex that "aliens show up, military goes to kill everybody, alien head honcho gets killed" Especially when you factor the mission packs in. There was the whole conspiracy angle of that the people in charge KNEW of Xen, and how the Military was requested to pull out and a team of Black Ops was sent in to destroy the facility instead of trying to take it back. But I digress...

Anywho, I just finished reading the article in PC Gamer, and I think you'll be pleased with the progess of HL2.. The game is said to be far more open ended and you (And the aliens) will be able to do stuff like destroying ANYTHING that uses a "wood" texture, and being able to pick up just about any object and use it in some fashion. Valve looks to be encouraging problem solving on a real-world level, which should help to avoid the linearity of the original.

One example given is that you could pick up a grate and use it as a shield against an auto-turret, then use the grate to smack the turret, knocking it over so it can't shoot vertically.. Other examples included an alien who knocks doors down (Which was hinted strongly at as not being a scripted event) and being able to drop an item onto a machines gears, jamming them (Again, not scripted, but a product of the physics engine)

Extremly cool stuff...

Sincerely,
Jeremy Dunn

34. Re: What Engine? Apr 22, 2003, 03:42 Undead Scottsman

The blurb about them using the Quake3 engine is an old joke taken horribly out of context. More than likely, Valve will be using the new engine they were working on for Team Fortress 2...

As for the plotline of Half-Life 2.. the two covers we've seen so far look like they take place in a snowy area.. Perhaps there's another research facility, a "White Mesa" if you will, in Alaska. But who knows..

Sincerely,
Jeremy Dunn

If this isn't blatent enough to convice you guys, I don't know what is.. Although it could be fake, PHL seems to think it's real... Apparently some rag of a magzine stole the cover from PC Accelerator..

The fact of the matter is that "Everything has been done" in the FPS genre

There was a quote awhile back of a Patent Clerk who once said something to the effect of "Man has invented eveything there is to invent"

This was in 1890..

If you can't think of new innovations for the current crop of FPS's than you have, quite frankly, a sorely lacking imagination..

But even if there wasn't anything left to revolutionize, that would be a pretty piss-poor reason to NOT make a sequel.. SO long as it's fun, who the !@#$ cares? Why bother playing a game unless it's to have fun?

Sincerely,
Jeremy Dunn

Rajajuruman, I would recommend not speaking of things that you know nothing about..

FACT: Half-Life was ALWAYS planned to be a retail game, which is Valve LISCENSED the source code from id.. You don't spend several thousand dollars for the Quake engine to make a freebie mod.

FACT: Half-Life was first built on the ORIGINAL Quake engine.. Valve later took bits and pieces of the Quakeworld and Quake II source, but it was the first Quake engine that they started and did most of the work with. This is all ultimatly meaningless through, since Half-Life's engine was composed of about 70% of Valve's own code by the time it was released (And the number has jumped up even higher with some of the recent patches)

Half-life was only hyped as much as every other game in it's time, up until shortly before its released when game reviewers were able to play a near-finalized version. It was only then that the "best game ever" accolades started appearing.

Of course, in order for HL2 to be as revolutionary as Half-Life 1, they'll need to put in some revolutionary features. But they put some revolutionary ideas into the original Half-Life (The Skeletal animation system, the blended color lighting, lighting fast level load times and advanced AI to name some) I don't doubt its within their power to do repeat the event. Wether they WILL pull it off, I have no clue, but when I first heard of Half-Life I wouldn't have expected it to be nearly as successful as it was.

Now if Valve could just strangle Counter-Strike, I would be a happy man

Sincerely,
Jeremy Dunn

I once downloaded a 400mb game on a 33.6.. It took me two days of course But I still got it..

But it would take a person a little under 12 hours to download 100mb at 2.5KB a second..

Considering that Opposing Force was insanly overpriced at 40 bucks when it first came out three years ago in 1999, I'd consider The Frozen Throne to be pretty cheap.. especially since the original game costed like 50 dollars..

I mean, seriously.. Those crappy sims expansions cost like 30, and the Medal of Honor epansion is 35. The price is right on the money.

But the simple rule of thumb here: if you don't like it, don't buy it.

Sincerely,
Jeremy Dunn

Err.. Maybe because graphics aren't everything?

Shoot, I have RtCW and the UT2003 demo, and you know what I play the most? Natural Selection for Half-Life..

Why? Because it's damned fun! And the GFX aren't really as bad as people make them out to be.. (Of course, this is coming from a guy who thought the 3D bonus stages of Sonic 2 were really awesome)

31. The point of "Game of the Year" editions Jun 11, 2002, 02:05 Undead Scottsman

Who on Earth honestly thinks Activisions doing this to make people buy the game twice? Seriously, USE YOUR BRAIN!

They slap together Game of the Year editions to try and get the people who passed on it the first time to buy it. "Oh look, it was 'GAME OF THE YEAR' so it must have been good, I guess I'll buy it now"

Surprisingly, it must work, otherwise the concept would have gone away. I mean, honestly, if the marketing people were really as stupid as you take them to be, they would be out of business. Since they're not, I'd take it to mean that they know what the hell they're doing.

And it's not like you HAVE to buy the GotY edition.. all the new maps for it will be released online (Or already have been) and the rest of stuff is... well... not something that anyone should care about.. Little trimmings so they can add another bullet to the features list.

So, chill and go play whatever game is #1 on your list this week.

Sincerely,
Jeremy Dunn

WTF?

1. I retracted my previous statement (See the post below yours) I had forgoten how crappy the service actually was in comparison to the concept of how it should work.

2. Yes, my grammer WAS surprisingly bad at that point, but you should see my handwriting. Now THAT is something to truly make fun of.

3. Did I ONCE say being a geek was bad? No? So quit putting words in my mouth. I am damn proud of my geekdom, and when I say someone's a geek, I'm saying they're computer-savvy or like playing computer games.

Sincerely,
Jeremy Dunn

Arrrrrggggg!

You people are driving me nuts! Fileplanet is an extremly well thought out service. Instead of pounding the server trying to be one of 200 people allowed to download at a time, they have you wait in line so that 1. You're GARENTEED to be able to download the file instead of being shut out due to a slow connection and 2. The downloads isn't slowed down due to being hammered by the throngs of geeks trying to get the file.

Honestly, give me fileplanet over two dozen servers I can't download off of without a T3 or an incredible streak of luck.

Sincerely,
Jeremy Dunn
