DX:HR was excellent and the rubbish boss fights were only 50% their fault, in that they didn't make them but they should have paid more attention. I didn't like the expansion but that's a relatively minor complaint.

Heh, that's a bit of an ironic stance.... are you aware that the expansion had what was considered a "fixed" approach to boss fights - you could approach that particular battle any way you wanted to, and even just knock the guy out instead of killing him if you wanted? It was one of the better points.

Enjoying my first run thru this game... shouldn't have read some of these posts. Just quit the main game at the ship to do the missing link, disappointed about the DLC not integrating into the main game.

This annoyed me to no end as well and is a bit of a problem for all of the subsequent playthroughs I've done; I hate needing advance knowledge for what point in the game I need to actually save, bomb out, and load up a completely different executable in order to play the DLC within the right "timeline" in the plot... and then awkwardly switch back to the core came when finished.

Why couldn't they just integrate it into the main game?

Are you new to the internet?

Edit: OK, that was a bit of a harsh response - RollinThundr's reply above echoes my sentiments pretty nicely. I've got some good memories of a few of these sites.

Myth - A mediocre and forgettable RTS series

Wait, what? When did Myth become "mediocre"? I've barely played the series myself but I thought it was pretty much reknowned for it's popularity; was there some sudden paradigm shift in what old games are considered "good", or is this just a case of you personally disliking it for some reason?

Is the Halo franchise really all that terrible? I don't know - I find a lot of people slam on Halo just for the heck of it. I've always found the games pretty engaging and fun to play. There's a reason they sell so well. I don't mind that they keep putting out new chapters and releases because I always want to see what's going to happen next in the story.

Then again, I'm also one of those rare players who's only in it for the singleplayer / co-op and avoids the competitive multiplayer like the plague - maybe that's where the franchise gets a lot of it's bad rap from?

Edit: Either way I'm looking forward to seeing how this develops - at the least Bungie's games always have a ton of refinement behind them, co-op play (for the most part) and tend to align with my own particular favored genres and settings. Even if this turns out to be "just another shooter", I'll probably still play it for these reasons alone.

Remember being a child? You liked Nintendo so you didn't buy a Sega. Maybe your friends grinded you a bit at school but that was about it.

A little off-topic, but I always feel like I'm in the minority when I say that this has never been the case for me. I've never had any kind of hard-core brand favoritism like that; it was just that all the different gaming platforms had games different available. I didn't really see any significant pros or cons to any of them; it was all down to whatever game I wanted to play at the time.

Which is pretty much the same case at it is now; I never understand why people get so bent out of shape with comments about Xbox being "better" than the PS3 or vice-versa (for example). Maybe I'm just in a unique position though because I happen to own all of the major consoles and whichever one I use at the time is the same deal - down to whatever particular games I feel like playing (less of a consideration now given the propensity towards multi-platform releases). I don't really see one as being better than the other overall, although certain features on one platform may be better-implemented (and the other way around).

I'm the same way about games these days as well - I don't understand why people *have* to hate Hawken and love Mechwarrior Online, for example - why can't people enjoy both based on their own individual merits? Or, if one or the other happens to not quite fit one's tastes, why do they always have to go out of their way to declare the game "shitty" and without any redeeming merit whatsoever?

Actually, re-reading your post, I think this does fit what you're trying to say. This is also a major reason why I hate just about everyone on the internet and understand why most developers tend to avoid their own messageboards like the plague. The way average feedback goes these days, you would think that every single game that that is ever released is a horrible failure and that everyone should just give up on trying to make games.

Yeah, all the discussions here apply only to the multiplayer mode - I'm in the same boat in that I didn't even bother with it. I've only ever been into Mass Effect for the singleplayer experience, and (controversial ending aside) have always found it very enjoyable. 3 was no exception.

Cool stuff. Co-op is awesome when done right (especially if you have a regular gaming group you play with) and I'm so glad it's had a resurgence in recent years!

I echo this sentiment - I love the hell out of co-op play and don't think it really deserves that bad of a rap. I'd rather play a game in a proper, storyline-driven co-op setting than competitive deathmatch.

That said, I do feel this should be balanced out by having a strong singleplayer setting to begin with. It's all about the storyline.

That said, yeah, if only 20 people are playing it, I'm not sure there's really a point in keeping it up anymore, especially since the game can still be played MP without it. (worst case scenario, they VPN to each other and emulate a LAN.)

This here is the big argument - the games that actually deserve outrage over this sort of thing are those that don't offer any LAN play whatsoever (i.e. certain EA games that have seen recent shutdowns over the years), and as such offer no alternative options.

I've played the hell out of Lost Planet 2 and Dead Rising 2 in co-op on the PC at various LAN parties, and had tons of fun doing it.

In the age of the internet, sometimes you want to be social with people in the same room without giving up geeky pleasures.

I do this - it's called "haul my computer over to the other guy's place and play co-op games all day while yelling at each other each time someone screws up".

(In all seriousness though, I concur - boardgames still have a good place. We've had craploads of fun with the Battlestar Galactica boardgame)

B-but, that's how I actually play my PC games! =\

I don't care how good this game is, I cannot in good conscience support a developer as arrogant and douchey as this fucker.

Good lord. This actually explains a lot, now.

Sims 2 was released in 2005, 7 years ago. Do you realize a lot of games that don't retire servers, simply have their servers stop working over time because of things like "out of business" etc?

I for one would not be playing SC5 in 7 years if I were to buy it any time soon.

Maybe it's just you. I still pull out Sim City 2000 every once in a while to have some fun, or because I want to show my son a game that's better than Minecraft.

And, of course, the problem isn't multiplayer, the problem is that you have to play on their servers for singleplayer.

I echo this sentiment - I still dust off my old 7+ year old games every now and then and play through them.

The shutting down of servers would be less of an issue for me in this case if it didn't affect the singleplayer component. At the least they should come out with some kind of server emulator or something.

Case in point: Mercenaries 2. Came out to PC with no LAN play whatsoever. I finally picked it up a few years later when I learned it had co-op, and was crushed when I found out they had turned off the online servers - there was literally no way to play the game multiplayer, at all, meaning I had pretty much wasted the (admittedly small) investment put into picking it up.

Fortunately someone had coded up their own home-brew server emulator for the game - we plugged that in and were up and running in no time.

I can understand having to decommission old server infrastructure after a period of time, but for god's sake, give your customers some kind of alternative solution instead of hanging them out to dry.

I had a ton of fun with GRAW on the PC doing co-op - I could park in a corner and use the top-down view to issue orders to the other players like an RTS game, while they ran around and killed stuff. It was great.

Future Soldier was fun too; the scripted events and mission structure made the game pretty interesting, particularly when combined with the rover. It was a bit arcadey and less strategic-feeling than the previous games (and the storyline was hard to pay attention to), but still decent amounts of fun.

I actually really enjoyed Resident Evil 5 - the only reason was because it had full co-op through the entire campaign, and was fuckloads of fun for me and a friend to go through. I guess as a purely singleplayer title it might not have stacked up too well, but it was one of the best co-op experiences I've had.

Plus it gave me the opportunity to make this screenshot.

Did they do the same thing with RE6 - does it have full campaign co-op? I remember reading some previews and getting mixed signals because it was sort of talking about a drop-in / drop-out mechanic that only worked at certain points and sounded terrible.

Yeah, CS was meh. I'm sure you are aware of it, but if not, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is best played with the 'Complete' Mod, and it is available for all three games. Somebody here on Blue's News posted the info and link some time ago, but I don't remember who it was. Anyway, it is supposed to hold true to the original art styles and story, but I don't know if it does, as I've only played SoC and CS with the 'Complete' mod. It looks really good, plays well, and is worth checking out for anyone that isn't familiar with the mod. Good hunting!

Have they fixed the Complete mod for CoP yet? I was all excited to dive right into it, but I heard that particular variant (unlike the one for the other two games) is hideously broken and the developer abandoned it. This sort of mothballed my drive to get into CoP (which is still outstanding on my to-play list), because I just didn't feel like throwing away an entire day trying to figure out how to get a bunch of different mods working when "Complete" usually makes it so easy.

It isn't so much about dudebro ignorance, though that's there, as it is about bang for the buck. A single player game, outside of open world games like Skyrim, is 8-20 hours. A multiplayer game is endless. If you're only going to buy one game this month, it makes sense to get the game that will last you the entire month. Or two months. Whatever your budget is.

I really wish that mentality wasn't so prevalent though, if only because I find competitive multiplayer games really repetitive, and I tire of them quickly. I'd much rather have a really engrossing singleplayer / co-op experience to dive into. Yes, for any singleplayer game I'm likely to shelve it after a playthrough, but if it's really good, I'll always pick it up again a few months later to give it another run-through. I do this for all of the great singleplayer games in my collection.

Of course, I also know that it isn't the same for everyone, and others prefer competitive multiplayer to singleplayer, and that I'm probably in the minority. Which is OK... my problem with this is that the raw sales metrics affect what kind of games end up published in the future. These days, this means I'm far less likely to see the kind of singleplayer / co-op gameplay experience I enjoy come onto the market.

I never once wanted a MP mode for Bioshock, or System Shock 2 for that matter, so I don't see the point to having one in this.

System Shock 2 had multiplayer. I played through the majority of the game co-op on a LAN.

Agreed, this is actually the only way I've ever played through the game. The annual three-way System Shock 2 co-op sessions my local LAN group has are the things of legend.

I do concur that competitive multiplayer might not be a super good fit for BS: Infinite, but I do find myself wishing it would have co-op play implemented, just because co-op in SS2 was so darned fun. I always wished the previous Bioshock releases had co-op as well.
