Yup. Which we already mentioned in April, so there was no need to repeat that.

The 'screenshots' I think you're referring to are shown in the artworks section of this site:
http://1914-online.jowood.de/main.php?rid=635&lang=en
So I guess they were just renders.

I sure hope the freaks and geeks at 3dgamers do justice to the series.
How so? We didn't make the game, Red Lemon did.

12. Re: Mail server Jul 18, 2002, 15:06  Frans

Judging by the problems that this web site has had in the past, I'd say that bluesnews.com is running on a co-located box (Blue's machine inside the server room) but they're using their ISP's mail server.
Correct.
It wouldn't be difficult (although maybe not practical based on resource usage and/or OS installed on this web server) to set up a mail server on the machine to alleviate the mail problems,
We considered that indeed, but our main server (running the news database, web, ftp and .plan tracker) is regularly choking indeed, so we decided against moving our mail flow (flood, more like) there. Until a few months ago, that machine had a track record worse than the mail server.

The long-term solution is of course to move everything elsewhere, but unfortunately 'long-term' appears to be keyword there.

Unfortunately, we don't have control over the mail server, or the OS it's running. That's the big problem, otherwise this situation would have been addressed the first time it cropped up many months ago.

OK - - I emailed the stuff to Frans - - let's hope it helps!
Yep, it did. Your screen capture showed that a larger font than the default will wrap the text line below the logo into two lines, and that distorted the whole header resulting in the logo misalignment. That explains why only a few IE6 (or any IE, I guess) users were seeing a problem, and most weren't.

While in general we can't support large fonts well in the page layout, this was easy enough to fix by cutting down the text line into something shorter (though less inviting ;)). Thanks for the help.

4. Re: sorry, still broken Jul 13, 2002, 13:19  Frans

Can you mail me (fpv@bluesnews.com) the source code from your browser between the 'start global header insert' and 'end global header insert' comments (not the entire page)? And if possible a screen capture from the top area of the page? Then I'll try to figure out what's causing the misalignment and if I can fix it. Thanks.

20. Re: Still slightly broken Jul 12, 2002, 23:25  Frans

Interestingly enough, the only remaining problem I can find is is that the "BluesNews" Logo on the main page is slightly misaligned in the middle - - all other pages seem fine. I use IE 6.0.26
Ok, here's the story for those interested in a little HTML weirdness :): this was a known problem in NS6 and Mozilla, though I thought at first that I had it fixed in IE6. I battled it for a while last week, but eventually attributed it to some bug (possibly in the ad banner code itself) I didn't understand, and moved on to convert the rest of the site to the updated HTML code.

After today's reports, I had another look at it. The problem was situated around the table cell that holds the ad banner, but our HTML defines that the ad banner include and the closing cell tag are not separated by any whitespace, ie. <TD...><!--#include...--></TD>

This renders fine in all other browsers I tried (NS4, Opera5/6, IE5), so in Mozilla it finally occurred to me to view the source that the browser thinks it receives... and much to my surprise there was a newline before the </TD> tag, which causes the right half of the logo to be pushed down, and thus the misalignment.

So it looks like NS6 and Mozilla (and presumably IE6 too, but I can't test that as I'm sticking to IE5) have a rendering bug where they insert space after a long include line, which in turn causes the table cell misalignment. I found a work-around (the <TD>...</TD> container is now embedded in the include), and the problem seems solved.

Please let me know if you see any further anomalies, and thanks for everyone's feedback.

Is this the first time Sabotain has been on here?
No, we've covered it a few times before, and it used to be called Sabotage: Fist of the Empire before the name change to Sabotain, and there's half a dozen stories on the old title too. Do a news archive search.

16. Re: actually Jul 11, 2002, 23:07  Frans

It's a hell of a drag to have to bookmark ever single hardware site out there, then check them for updates.
Indeed, that's why we don't do that. We check lots of gaming, developer and publisher sites though.

The past several days Blue's been really slim with the links; I was starting to think he was phasing that section out or something.
The reason for this is mentioned in Out of the Blue: the list is compiled entirely from mail submissions, and there were very few of those while our mail server was down.

11. Re: I have a problem!!! Jun 26, 2002, 13:50  Frans

Seriously, it looks fine...not that I have been having any real problems in IE lately.
Well, we tested IE5/6, NS4/6, Mozilla and Opera5/6 on Windows already, so we're just looking for glitches in less common browsers and on other OSes.
Off the top of my head, the logo is broken on the more advanced posting pages (Account Options, Lost Password).
Those haven't been fixed yet, like Blue said we're testing this single page first before applying that code to the whole site.
Although you will likely have to take it up with BP, it would be cool k3\/\/1 if posted links acted as "Launch Links."
I'm not sure what you're referring to here, on which pages are you missing the Launch Links option? And who's "BP"?

Where will I go to find old Q1 levels now?
The Quake (idgames2) ftp archive that was maintained by Joost Schuur at ftp.cdrom.com is still around. You can find the details of this (and the Doom and Unreal archives) at http://www.3dgamers.com/about/archives.html

Odd, they used a different (http) server for this release rather than their usual (very slow) ftp server, and it was plenty fast yesterday. Guess that didn't last long.

You can find the movie on the official site as of today as well, http://www.tombraider.com/ (Flash required), and also on 3D Gamers.

News Comments > On the UT2003 Demo Leak
31. Re: No subject Jun 11, 2002, 23:25  Frans

Frans, I think this should be proof that it is a good time to talk with Blue about REQUIRED REGISTRATION for the forums.
That is under serious consideration for a while already, though so far mostly because of the excessive profanity and general negativity that seems to go around this board lately. However, that atmosphere is not brought about only by anonymous users, registered ones are guilty of contributing to it as well. For that reason, we haven't decided yet whether disabling anon posting will make a worthwhile difference.

As for this particular situation with the leaked demo, that happened for SoF2 as well, and locking that thread until the official demo came out addressed that sufficiently. So regrettably, this thread is dangerously close to the same fate.
