Sorry guys, but our server allows only 80 ftp users. We'd love to run a big beefy server network, but our resources and bandwidth just don't allow that.

Two new mirrors have just been added though, and more will follow.

News Comments > Red Faction Demo
56. Re: RedFaction demo (PC) - mirror sites? Aug 10, 2001, 16:21  Frans

#52, The demo was meant for cover distribution on European magazines, eg. PC Gamer UK's current (September) issue says they'll have it on the next one.

It got released through the UK office of publisher THQ, and they most likely didn't intend the file to be released on the 'net, but these things always happen sooner or later. In this case, it was sooner. I've downloaded stuff from this same Polish site before and that went fine, but obviously they weren't prepared for this level of demand. So it's hard to blame any specific party there, but with a little restraint (like 30-40 mins) in posting the news story, US mirrors would have been online in the morning.

#45, Please don't post trolls like that, GameSpot doesn't work that way. I know who's in charge of their downloads, and it's not you.

I can assure everyone that every major download site (FilePlanet, 3DFiles, 3DGamers, 3DDownloads, you name it) is doing their best to post mirrors, but none have as yet been able to obtain a complete copy of the file, because the Polish site was slashdotted too soon by another news site. If you want to blame anyone for this mess, blame Apache.

I have 80 percent of the file myself, but unfortunately the last 20 proves to be tough to come by. Nonetheless, the story will be updated with mirrors once there are any.

News Comments > Dungeon Siege Movie
2. Re: F*ck, I Hates FilePlanet Aug 4, 2001, 20:22  Frans

Without going into too much detail on your... err... rant Blizzard is not the best example to the point you're making, as it lists several mirrors for their patches besides FP, including their own ftp server.

However, it does indeed happen more and more that companies host their official demos and patches on FP. Most recently 3D Realms made that switch away from their own ftp server (although they haven't shut it down yet, they're just not linking to it from their website anymore). There are plenty of other examples too.

Anyway, I just posted the recent three Dungeon Siege movies on my other site, just in case it's useful to anyone.

News Comments > Mac FAKK2 Patch
2. Re: HMMM Aug 4, 2001, 11:06  Frans

The "how" part is mentioned in the story: we saw it on Stomped, Stomped got it from FAKKYou.com. Duh

As for the patch being old, well, we didn't know, but the v1.02b patch was the last one we reported on November 9, and on a server that has since disappeared, so this 1.02c patch was new(s) to us.

What do you mean... "locked"? Are you sure you're not simply experiencing a full ftp server? Which link on the file page are you referring to? Details, man, details.

I'm not sure which game has been in development longer, but we first covered Aquarius in February 2000 and Iron Strategy in August 1999, if that's any measure.

Nikita also released a non-playable demo around that time, and an updated version in March last year, which you can grab here for comparison to their new movie, if you like:

#6, you could set the Launch Links option (down the menu bar) so that links to other sites open up in a new window. Then you don't need to go Back every time and the ad won't reload.

2. Re: Starfigher? Aug 1, 2001, 17:27  Frans

Yes, there are two headlines in the news database, one shown on the frontpage (which can be longer), and the other in the Stories of Note and Popular Threads tables (which needs to be fairly short so it doesn't break the layout of those tables), and on the message board.

It doesn't imply either should contain a typo, though. Thanks.

I get my post deleted because I give an opinion on Imus which wasn't even inflammitory
As far as I can tell, no post has been deleted by anyone in weeks. Also, deleted posts don't actually disappear but are replaced by a note that they're "removed".

Which thread was that, and are you sure you actually committed the post?

You're right, it's not hard at all, I just changed it. But it's written without the umlaut on Hardware Pub, so it's hardly something you can blame Blue for.

4. Re: Only previews at corporate sites Jul 29, 2001, 11:44  Frans

No, every site has a fair chance (assuming they let us know about their content, because we can't possibly check every gaming site out there ). We don't judge whether a site is small or big, we just look at the news value of their content. That means hands-off previews that rehash already known information about a game get skipped. But if you check our daily Game and Hardware Reviews listings, you'll see that the smaller sites make up the majority of the entries there - because everyone has (or is assumed to have) the same access to the finished products, and their opinions are equally worthy of your attention (provided the writing meets a minimum quality level, of course ).

I hope this takes away your concern; we're not biased towards any site, big or small, only towards news value.

News Comments > TRIBES 2 Beta Demo
7. Re: thanks Jul 28, 2001, 19:41  Frans

ouch, I bet the Max Payne demo is going to be painful to the ftp servers when it comes out.

Any Half-Life / Counter-Strike patch release (especially because there are so many files) causes the participating sites to be hammered very heavily for the first day or so. I imagine the Max Payne demo will have close to the same effect, yeah.

I don't even want to contemplate the strain that a new Doom test demo will cause.
