News Comments > IL-2 Sturmovik Demo
2. Re: Mirrors Aug 22, 2001, 18:59  Frans

Actually, one of the 3D Gamers' ftp server certainly had the demo at posting time, otherwise the website wouldn't even show it, and the other server has just been synced up as well. But both servers are of course maxed out, so more mirrors are welcome indeed.

News Comments > Homeworld 2 Not Cancelled
24. Re: Where are Homeworld Engine Games? Aug 21, 2001, 20:10  Frans

The site is called GamaSutra I believe, although a search of their site doesn't reveal a post-mortem article about Homeworld..
Right, we never covered a Homeworld post-mortem, on Gamasutra or any other site, so perhaps it never appeared online but only in Game Developer Magazine or somesuch?

Someone posted on this jDoom thread commenting on what a game to keep modifying.
Actually, that was yesterday's "jDoom Patch" thread - your other posts are still there and didn't magically move to this thread, nor are you being censored. No comment on possible technical difficulties.

Oh, and yes, we scramble every corner of the web - well, the gaming related ones, that is.

77. Re: Corrupt file? Aug 20, 2001, 23:46  Frans

I downloaded the thing 2 times (from blues and planetmirror) but when I unzip the file I get a bad crc error.
I'm afraid the problem must be introduced on your end, as the file has no CRC errors when verified on our server (nor 3D Gamers' servers).

loonyboi accidentally posted a story here that was to go up on the Shack - I guess he still misses us. Your comment got attached to this story because he removed his story while you were posting it (might be a bug, but then again, this kind thing shouldn't really happen in the first place).

Its probably the most expensive part to maintain
Actually, it isn't.
i'm sure most people get files from avault or fileplanet or IGN first before bluesnews
Well, that's pretty rare since most of the files we post locally are received directly from the developer/publisher and posted before any other sites, or at a scheduled time together with few others. We feel it's a useful service and there's no immediate reason to discontinue it now (after all, it's only a small archive, we're no FilePlanet or anything ). As for the "most people" part, well, duh, our ftp server allows only 80 users to keep things managable, rather than the hundreds (or more) simultaneous users of the big download sites, but they're rarely as timely updated (IMNSHO ).

News Comments > Game Reviews
2. Re: Demo reviews Aug 19, 2001, 21:02  Frans

No, because these days a lot of demos are so huge that downloading them over a modem connection takes a lot of time, and that's where demo reviews can help make up people's minds whether to take that plunge (just like reviews of full games do for purchases).

Of course, some demo reviews come out two or more weeks after the file's release, making them somewhat pointless, but hey, we don't cook the news, we just serve it (as Blue always likes to point out ).

The IMDB lists only Rodriguez as director (Tarantino has writing credits), so that's what I went by.

80. Re: Well... Aug 16, 2001, 00:47  Frans

#33, Ray,
1. Bye Jason. I am sad to see you go and wish the best of luck to you.
Ditto. Besides a great colleague and sparring partner on the daily news, Jason is also a good friend. I miss him already.
2. What all led up to this? You would think that Jason would still stick around in some shape or form...
The UGO cutbacks in January, and the difficulties in securing other sources of revenue since then. Jason already stuck around for seven months, and could no longer afford to continue that. That's basically in Steve's story.
3. How many times do I have to ask-BEG-for an opportunity to support Blue's News? Again, I *want* to give you money.
We are working on ways to accommodate something like that, but they'll be announced by Steve once the time is there.
4. What are the current plans? New editor(s)? Less updates? Major/minor changes?
As few changes as possible, news coverage as before. Although the daily Consolation round-up (which Jason compiled) will likely suffer.
6. How far...close are we to a dead Blue's News site?
Not even close.

Thanks to everyone for their support and feedback.

Sorry guys, but our server allows only 80 ftp users. We'd love to run a big beefy server network, but our resources and bandwidth just don't allow that.

Two new mirrors have just been added though, and more will follow.

News Comments > Red Faction Demo
56. Re: RedFaction demo (PC) - mirror sites? Aug 10, 2001, 16:21  Frans

#52, The demo was meant for cover distribution on European magazines, eg. PC Gamer UK's current (September) issue says they'll have it on the next one.

It got released through the UK office of publisher THQ, and they most likely didn't intend the file to be released on the 'net, but these things always happen sooner or later. In this case, it was sooner. I've downloaded stuff from this same Polish site before and that went fine, but obviously they weren't prepared for this level of demand. So it's hard to blame any specific party there, but with a little restraint (like 30-40 mins) in posting the news story, US mirrors would have been online in the morning.

48. Re: RedFaction demo (PC) - mirror sites? Aug 10, 2001, 15:27  Frans

#45, Please don't post trolls like that, GameSpot doesn't work that way. I know who's in charge of their downloads, and it's not you.

I can assure everyone that every major download site (FilePlanet, 3DFiles, 3DGamers, 3DDownloads, you name it) is doing their best to post mirrors, but none have as yet been able to obtain a complete copy of the file, because the Polish site was slashdotted too soon by another news site. If you want to blame anyone for this mess, blame Apache.

I have 80 percent of the file myself, but unfortunately the last 20 proves to be tough to come by. Nonetheless, the story will be updated with mirrors once there are any.

News Comments > Dungeon Siege Movie
2. Re: F*ck, I Hates FilePlanet Aug 4, 2001, 20:22  Frans

Without going into too much detail on your... err... rant Blizzard is not the best example to the point you're making, as it lists several mirrors for their patches besides FP, including their own ftp server.

However, it does indeed happen more and more that companies host their official demos and patches on FP. Most recently 3D Realms made that switch away from their own ftp server (although they haven't shut it down yet, they're just not linking to it from their website anymore). There are plenty of other examples too.

Anyway, I just posted the recent three Dungeon Siege movies on my other site, just in case it's useful to anyone.

2. Re: HMMM Aug 4, 2001, 11:06  Frans

The "how" part is mentioned in the story: we saw it on Stomped, Stomped got it from FAKKYou.com. Duh

As for the patch being old, well, we didn't know, but the v1.02b patch was the last one we reported on November 9, and on a server that has since disappeared, so this 1.02c patch was new(s) to us.
