If it's a Creative soundcard (small chance, I know :)) you need a separate version of the v436 patch: http://eax.creative.com/downloads/unreal/
It's the one near the end of the page, of 32.2 MB.

2. Re: WW II games. . . Nov 23, 2001, 12:29  Frans

You got it: it's not an FPS but an RTS.

Not that those haven't been made with the WWII theme yet, mind you. Sudden Strike, WarCommander (now out in Germany and due early next year in US/UK), and the upcoming World War II: Panzer Claws come to mind...

my initial complaint wasn't as much about whether they were new or not, but the fact they'd spoiled the shots with their URL splattering
True, can't argue with that. Most sites are modest in branding their shots, some... aren't. That just wasn't good enough a reason to skip this link precisely because, as you say, it was a convenient gallery for anyone who might have missed some of these shots.

Thanks for the kind words, of course.

4. Re: wait a sec... Nov 21, 2001, 17:02  Frans

Well, as it turns out, I was right the first time: the demo was corrupt at on NovaLogic's servers, and they replaced with a valid copy just now. Apologies to anyone that downloaded it there previously, I didn't check thoroughly enough why their first copy was corrupt (it consisted entirely of empty data X|).

Well, they may have got them from a press site, but the large versions of a number (AT-AT on desert world, for example) all have the Lucasarts logo stuff on them that matches the treatment given the shots on the official site's gallery.
That's how LucasArts distributes their shots to press and (often) to gaming sites, you can't hold that against Worthplaying.

I hesitated long before including this link, and compared the gallery with the ones on the Station and GameSpot, and also checked SWG Vault (which didn't have a gallery, unfornately), and while there were matches for many images, there weren't for all of them. I couldn't compare them against LucasArts' site because their DNS is foobar-ed since last week and the site doesn't load for me most of the time. So there.

all the newspages say that Telefragged has special screens and you say they have just new screens ... but that's not true. It's one new screen.
I don't know why you're bringing Telefragged into this, but read my post again: the word 'new' isn't even in there so your argument doesn't hold up - even though I trust you're correct as you're more familiar with the game than I am - because that's not why I included the link in the list.

No, these shots were distributed via a press-only site to lots of sites, and they were the first to post them. Some may have appeared on the official site (but they aren't there anymore, otherwise it would indeed have been a skip), over half I'm certain have appeared in various previews, but there were a few I didn't recognize (but that may be because they're really old). So they got a link "just to be on the safe side," but in general that is something I try hard to avoid.

So I have to install this Gigex garbage in order to get the demo?
No, you can also get it from the first link at NovaLogic. The file has the exact same size so I don't think it's corrupt there either and I just had a (very rare) local problem.

Computer and Video Games told you they were new?
No, I spotted them there and didn't recognize them. I had a small suspicion they might not be new, but counted on you to point that out sooner. Yoinked.

3. Re: Dang... Nov 13, 2001, 22:02  Frans

At 44 links, this is almost certainly a new record for Hardware Reviews, yeah. No idea what the old one was as we didn't really keep track of that, but for Game Reviews we had a record 55 entries last year in December. It's unlikely we'll ever get that again though, since so many sites have shut down since. Of course, this list and today's Game Reviews are artificially enlarged due to our mail being down over the weekend, so we caught up to many of those links yesterday for this morning's lists.

Yep, the network connection is the culprit and this is being looked into by the datacenter tech guys. We're not the only site suffering from this problem and word we received from UGO is that this is their top priority. So here's hoping...

Your patience continues to be appreciated.

The server itself is running fine, at extremely low load. The board and .plans will always be a bit slower than the frontpage because the former are CGI scripts and the latter is a static .shtml page. The slowness is really due to the tiny connection we've been put on. Thanks for your suggestions though.

7. Re: oy Nov 11, 2001, 15:30  Frans

Why was the site completely down for two whole days? Couldn't they at least have put up a temp server saying the site was moving with an ETA posted?
Unfortunately not, as the UGO datacenter was completely dismantled and everything in it moved at another one. It took them over two days to reinstate DNS at the new center, which is necessary for the site (be it temporary or real) to be accessible at all.

Why is the UGO icon still on the page?
Because we haven't left their network, just their datacenter.

10. Re: Passwords/registration required galore Nov 4, 2001, 23:00  Frans

Just leave the downloads for the userbase of those closed sites.
That applies to Shacknews, and this is indeed the first time I've added them to a mirror list, simply because they were the first mirror to go live and I wanted to provide more options for folks out there.

As for FilePlanet, there are a lot of people out there that already have registered there (either for free or as a subscriber) and they have a bunch of download servers, thus contributing to getting the file out to folks. Listing the link on our mirror pages is merely a small convenience to people wanting to use FP despite their registration.

We always list a reasonable number of other sites as well, so it's not like you're being forced to use FP, right?

So what countries use DSTime?
Basically all of Western Europe uses DST - except it's called Summertime. DST is turned on at the last Sunday in March (first Sunday in April for the US, ie. one week later) and turned off at the same last Sunday in October (fortunately, as it used to be the last one in September, which messed up my work schedule for a month %)).

There's the FilePlanet that offers demos, patches, movies, etc. This requires registration for quite some time now, free or as a subcription. The "other" FilePlanet serves up the files from all the various Planet* sites and their hosted sites. This, I believe, required registration for a brief period as well earlier this year, but otherwise never did.
