Look above the posts: there's a little pull-down menu with 3 View options that does what you want.

How come this thread no longer appears under popular threads on the main page? Just curious.
Because the Popular Threads list only contains threads from the past week. When a thread is a week old, it's expired off that list, but can still continue to grow off course (albeit typically at a slow rate).

No, just refresh a few times until it shows up. It appears their website is running on 2 (or more) servers and not all of them are in sync with the latest content.

I feel like I remember playing a tech demo of this years ago, and it was in the very very early stages. I want to say no sound, or really bad sound. No interface, just steer, and that was about it. Anyone know if this is the same thing?
That was the first tech demo. A newer compatibility test demo was released last September, although it's still nowhere near a complete game:

That has nothing to do with your browser or OS, but sounds like a DNS problem at your provider. I wanted to suggest to access the site via their IP address (193.45.143.6) but that doesn't work since they're using virtual hosting for and the IP resolves to the main MGON site (which hosts the *Center network). So the only thing you can do is bug your provider to get their name server in sync with the rest of the world.

42. Re: BlueDean Jan 5, 2002, 12:09  Frans

As I understand it loony *got* paid. However, there came a time when Blue wasn't able to continue paying him a reasonable salary anymore. So loony decided to take the job at Shacknews...
That's about right, although it's a part-time gig, and Jason found a full-time day job in Manhattan soon after... he's doing fine now.

There are two issues with this call for more "content." One is crossing the fine line between reporting on news and generating it - a journalistic no-no as someone in the other MoH demo thread pointed out so viciously. We consider mirroring (or occasionally even premiering) demos and patches, or posting screenshots, more of a service than generating content, but doing previews, dairies, interviews and what have you is a different ball-park.

The other is time. As someone here already observed, we're working pretty crazy hours between the two of us. Apart from keeping up with mailed-in news and tracking down new stories ourselves, Blue needs to attend to the business side of the site, and I attend to 3D Gamers. During the week, neither of us has time to play games to any extent, so taking press builds for a spin and writing a good preview on them, or preparing an in-depth interview, just isn't feasible. And during the weekend we'd like to take it a bit easier just like the rest of the world, too.

So while we have in the past considered doing more "content," it remains something that doesn't very much appeal to us.

However, what we would like to work on is offering more services. We have a .plan tracker, a press release archive, local file downloads and a LAN Party system, so there's definitely room for expansion there. The Mailbag (more of a community service than content, anyway) is indeed regrettable sporadic since Jason's departure. Similarly, he was working on a Links database which got shelved at that time. We're handicapped by a lack of programming capacity (my Perl/CGI skils are rudimentary, and Steve's are absent ;P) but I'd still like to pose this question:

Do you have a suggestion for a worthwhile service to add to the site?

And, it doesn't go without saying, thanks for the kind words and support many have expressed here.

Frans, please post the original file again without the DX 8.1...
Apart from, as someone already observed, the copyright issues regarding the way a demo is released - I can understand that DirectX is included in CD-ROM demos to help reduce tech support issues but believe that it should never be included in online demos to avoid download size bloat, so I feel it's acceptable to strip it out if possible (but the other thread already showed not everyone agrees to that) - there's the simple fact that this new file isn't a .zip so it can't be unpacked and re-zipped without DX in the first place.

I was in touch with GameSpy/FilePlanet last night before they posted the file, discussing the possibility that they would leave out DX. But considering it was somewhat tricky to make it work in our original stripped version (and there still were complaints from folks having trouble installing it), they choose to not risk problems with this. I can respect that, although the extra 25 MB to download remains unfortunate.

I'm sorry I had to remove that post, but now that the official demo is out, we'll have to ask you to refrain from posting links to the previous versions of it.

I'm working on a local copy with more mirrors, should be up in about 20 minutes.

55. Re: Posting leaked demos Jan 1, 2002, 18:35  Frans

Hmmm... interesting comments, sarcastic or otherwise, on this release.

Let's get a few things out of the way: we didn't post this to get up anyone's *ss or to put magazines out of business. Our first responsibility is to you, our readers, to inform you to the best of our ability of what news is out there in gaming land, while also not needlessly and intentionally putting any particular party (ie. developer, publisher, magazine, other websites, our website) in a bad position.

That means we will generally honor embargoes on news and files (if we're aware of them), and certainly not break them ourselves. So when, for instance, a demo or patch release is scheduled for a certain time, we will post about it not a minute sooner. However, things get tricky with files that are to be released through a magazine first. Sooner or later, before or shortly after the mag's publication, the file will be uploaded and distributed online. It's inevitable, and it's rarely possible to contain it once it spreads beyond the site it was uploaded to. If that happens prior to the mag's release, it's tough for the magazine and the publisher, but we at Blue's News can rarely help to avoid the embargo being broken (we've done so in a few instances though), and it ultimately isn't our responsibility when it happens. The resulting news however, does become our responsibility.

So leaked demos, especially as eagerly anticipated as this one, put us in a bad position if we continue to sit on the news. This file had been out since Sunday night, became more widely distributed this past night, and was already mentioned on several other news sites and in forums all over the place, including this very Blue's Board. Since, as above, we also don't like to put ourselves in a bad position, and do you a disservice by not posting about it, there comes a point when we have to move forward and do our job of news reporting. That's what happened around noon today.

Now, I'll agree there is a fine line between reporting on a new demo if it's leaked, and hosting a local copy, but that decision was based on the particular nature of this download, which could be reduced by a sizable 25 MB. Posting it just on 3D Gamers (where I strip DirectX from demos whenever possible) was a given, but with the two Blue's News servers there would be more download capacity available (even though that's now all maxed out too :o), and we felt this ultimately provided a better service to you, our readers.

We're aware that we're now contributing to putting other parties in an undesirable position, and we regret that, but there simply is no good way to resolve this situation once the events unfold. And for the record, up to the time of this posting we have not been formally requested to pull the mirrors, nor have any of the other sites as far as I know.

Thank you for reading this far.

Does anybody else think the 3dgamers site is in serious need of a redesign?
Yes, I full agree. You have one for me? If not, we'll do with the current one until a new one is ready, thank you very much. At least it loads fast because it's a simple design.

38. Re: Install problems Jan 1, 2002, 17:09  Frans

hmmm, i have downloaded the sp demo from here and it won't install. Even though i tell it not to install directx8 it asks for a file that's not in the zip - it asks me to point it to the location of the file (still thinking that it's on the cd).. anyone else have this problem??
The only cause I can think of for that problem is when you unzipped the file without preserving the directory structure.

In the folder you unzipped it, you should have 10 files (Setup.exe, 2 .cab files, Readme.txt, etc.) and a 'redist' folder. That in turn should have a 'DirectX8' folder which should have 10 empty files for the DirectX stuff. It doesn't work if the files are missing, then you'll get the CD prompt, but with the structure intact and the empty files present, it should work.

Let me know if you still can't get it installed and I'll try to help.

yet I can't play the Comanche 4 test unless I set my system date back before Nov 17th.
FYI, a non-expiring demo was released shortly after that date, and an even newer one with multiplayer a few weeks back:
