News Comments > On the DOOM Movie
23. Interesting when reading the whole thing Dec 14, 2004, 11:20 World war 3

I very truthfully believe that my unapologetic and hyper-violent script would have been a Doom fan's movie dream come true. However, since my involvement, the film has steadily moved away from the realm of fandom and more toward the realm of traditional Hollywood interests. It's not been ideal, in my opinion, but I did what I could when I could, and I stand by that work.

Nice shot of realism there.

So that would mean that the fault would be more at the producers' and Id's end. Pushing for a mainstream movie instead of a more cult-like flick, drove the movie away from the franchise's roots

that I don't give a shit attitude
- Trent Reznor(?) in Doom 3: The Legacy)

Something which Doom3 comletely lacks as well.

It's cool to play the Quake1 pre-alpha version as well; it's on the same page.
I remember seeing those first screenshots - ah, the nostalgia.

1. Doom movie Dec 9, 2004, 13:15 World war 3

For years Id have been saying that they didn't want to rush the movie and stay in complete control so they would be satisfied with the result. They've put down multiple movie studios in the process.

But now, surely they can't say with dry eyes that the perversion of the Pinky character (a scientist turned monster), changing the setting from mars on some unkown planet, and finally replacing the whole 'hell' thing with some lame virus twist (effectively making it a true Resident Evil The Movie clone), is totally according to their will and vision!

So the producers said that they wouldn't make it unless it was mediocored to fit the general public and not 'just a couple of geeks and statanists'.
Either that or they desperately wanted to tie the movie in with the xbox version and the missionpack, both also scheduled for release next year.

I think large scale mods in Doom3 simply aren't feasable. There's a reason that Id limited the multiplayer support to 4 players. I think it's because supporting more players will really put stress on the hardware.

GD: Will players be utilizing any vehicles?

Lith: (Craig Hubbard, Lead Game Designer) – No, but you could play the game on a laptop while riding in a car or on the subway.

Lol. Though one of the first trailers did show an awesome scene where you would have the inside view of a car jumping and twisting around.
I hope this is even more of a joke and that the answer is actually "Yes, it'll be awesome."

I wonder if anyone ever solves the bullettime multiplayer thing. Obviously the effect is really cool in singleplayer, but with multiplayer it could be even cooler.

23. Re: Demo May 26, 2004, 05:19 World war 3

Is the engine USER FRIENDLY, or rather, CONTENT CREATOR FRIENDLY?

Here's a guess. I think that content creation is still very much the same as it was in Quake3. One advantage is that the compilation time is very low now, since the lighting is done in realtime.
The reason games will take a longer time to make, is that the content requires a lot more manhours, because there's much more detail to put in. This goes for levels, models, even sound.
Though the Source engine seems to have more of these tool built in (facial expressions tool, for instance), Id hasn't set their priorities there. It's understandable because Raven, their current primary licencee, has their own tools for such stuff (GHOUL). Also most of the companies they licence to have skilled programmers, and enough resources to let them make their own tools taylored to the specific needs of their project.

12. "Close" as in "the closest solar system" May 25, 2004, 13:46 World war 3

Brian Ramage - By the time the TSE is fully released, it will be far beyond Quake III's capabilities and close on the heels of Unreal 3's next generation graphics technology.

http://www.garagegames.com/mg/snapshot/view.php?qid=748

So it's not entirely done yet, I assume?

lol as if. ok john carmack i know it is you in disguise! nobody would be silly enough to say that for real.

Ok, it's a bit exaggerated. Still this looks like Doom3 on steroids. And it is a fact that Doom3 is designed to the featureset of the GeForce2.

It looks pretty good, but not really all that much better than Doom3 would look if it weren't held down by videocards with only 64 megs of ram instead of 1Gb, and GeForce2 compatibilty.

Frankly, for the kind of system requirements they've been talking about (3Ghz being low end, 1Gb videocard, a couple of gigs of ram), the Unreal3 engine looks pretty shabby.
Sure the models are detailed (although seeing the chains painted on this one http://www.unrealtechnology.com/screens/p_beast.jpg doesn't really make it look advanced), and the textures are higher res, but it's still very much indoor with only 1-3 monsters onscreen at the same time.
And that physics engine, I'm getting sick and tired of those stupid physics feature demos. It's more of a challenge to do something cool with such a feature gameplay-wise than to implement it, I guess.

even if not, that screen looks far more like xbox graphics and I wouldnt be surprised at all if that german website got PC and xbox screenshots mixed together. I see that all the time here.
The xbox doesn't have that high a resolution.
Just compare this xbox screenshot (released a week ago):
http://www.quake.de/show_picture.php?id=485

to the screenshot I originally pointed at (also released recently):

And what's etc? What else are you getting at? "No soft shadows, that's not scary, etc." That is retarded. You're not following a pattern there. What the crack am I supposed to be able to discern from that? All the other cliche's people have cracked up to bash DOOM 3?

I was just giving some examples of what people have been saying. So yes, all the other cliche's people have cracked. I think the screenshot gives a much better representation in terms of graphical quality than the xbox screens and trailer.

Softness of shadows is mainly determined by how far the object is from the surface it's shadow is projected on (the distance the light travels). It probably also depends on humidity and other properties of the stuff it's travelling through, but we can't expect an implementation of that from Carmack just yet

The screenshot isn't actually a very good one for judging the shadows, since it doesn't show the hellknight casting a nice long shadow on the floor or something. That's where you'd expect to see a soft realtime shadow.

I think this would be a better approximation of what Doom3 is going to be like in optima forma (though methinks the blur effect is pr-dept set loose):

http://www.quake.de/show_picture.php?id=482

Now we can complain. For instance, there are no soft shadows. And that, hell, it's just not that damn scary. Etc.
