9. Re: Ugh.. Feb 13, 2003, 04:17 World war 3

scarab, I know what you mean, the effects do look cool. But as allways, it depends on whether they're used appropriately. A lot of quake engine mods use bumpmapping on all walls, and it looks as if all the walls are wet. Sure it's nice that they're able to do that, but it doesn't make the game actually look cooler.
A good example is, the aforementioned, Tenebrae. They have both screenshots of classic Quake I levels with bumpmapping turned on (like http://tenebrae.sourceforge.net/shots7/quake47.jpg ), and they have screenshots of levels, with a little more thought, made from scratch - which look freakishly awesome (like http://tenebrae.sourceforge.net/shots7/quake00099.jpg ).

I guess it depends on what you do with new tech that counts, not the new tech itself. Same thing for Gore, it's nice they were able to make the game more colourful, but it was badly implemented..
*edit*
Six more screenshots of AMPII look much cooler!

scarab, I meant 'popular' as in cutting edge, the next big thing etc. Just like "curved surfaces" was the catch phrase a couple of years ago, before (and some time after) Quake3 was released. Now, every seriously cool looking game has features like bumpmapping and some sort of unified/enhanced lighting system. Don't worry, you won't hear me raving about UnrealX#'s graphics
Plus, you should have played one of the first beta demos of Gore, that was absolutely awesome, they screwed it up towards the release date with unnecessary dynamic lights, teddybear playermodels and shiny Unreal-'tubby happiness.

DHump, it might very well be, but it's not to be seen from those screenshots. For one thing the models aren't nearly as detailed (skin resolution, polygons) as what I've seen in Doom3 screenshots. I wonder what the system requirements are.
The kind of licensing system they use is interesting, imagine having (legal) access to the latest Doom3 tech build and tools.. It could be a next thing for mod authors.

I mean, it's nice to hear they're still around, but the screenshots look very plain. This looks like Gore, only with some popular features tagged on.
Use a little bit of good design when you're marketing something, please.

This is certainly not what one would expect from a publisher, making the good part of a full-fledged (priced) game available for free download.

It looks like poo. If there's one graphical enhancement over RF1, I'd like to see it.
It looks like the bridge between Serious Sam and a bad Quake 2 clone.

News Comments > New ATI Catalyst Drivers
7. Re: ATI? Drivers? Feb 10, 2003, 18:35 World war 3

If Doom3 were released tomorrow, I'd get a Radeon first thing in the morning.

I read somewhere that nvidia had to give up their top position in the market when they signed the xbox deal. They had to invest resources into developing the chip for that thing, resources otherwise devoted to the next-gen pc videochips (and fabprocesses, and cooling tech and other painful issues they're dealing with now).
It might be bs, but it's a plausible explaination for Ati's sudden uprising.

Still the screenshots look like shit, so it's probably a good thing they delayed it to get it better.

I'd imagine you'd rather play the ant missions in Red Alert: Counterstrike. But those were singleplayer only, weren't they?

After seeing what an improvement Opera is over Internet Explorer, it may very well be true.

Though I it's all a bit mysterious.. Download speeds are still the same, right? So it must be the rendering part that's going really fast and smart (predictive programming?). Or would it be like DAP or FlashGet..

That's a big letdown, it's just a rundown of the cutscenes. Doesn't mean it sucks, but for someone who played the game, it's not worth trying for hours to get it.

Hm, I sort of liked the creepy element of the zombies and x-creatures. Hope there will still be a good difference between the Wolfenstein and MOH games in terms of realism vs. plain fun.

Terrible voice acting. Then come the purple and green explosions, the run-amok telletubies ("marines", no doubt - HAHAHA) with their novelty supersoakers..
This is going to be some landmark allright.. oh yes. GameSpot will have to come up with some new categories for it's GOTY awards this year.
Totally the new benchmark to eh.. for eh.. No, the standard for eh.. ehm.. games?

No, you don't need Q2, that's why it's an 80 meg d/l. I didn't know either, it should be stated more explicitly on the site (not just on the features page, but on the download page too).

I hope it gets ported to gtkRadiant. That's the cross-platform, open-source edition used mostly in the Quake 3 community. Same thing goes for EF2.

I wish that for once, they would look at the quality of their product, instead of strictly at their timeline.

Three years isn't that much to create and polish an outstanding and innovating game.

It was a link to a site where they have these really cool Doom3 screenshots, with all details set high and stuff. Graphics really compare to Final Fantasy, the movie.
