I did call that stupid fuck, Gabe Newell and swore at his voice mail and I have sent countless emails to the stupid fucks at Valve telling them what stupid fucks they are.
But I still haven't been able to play Half-Life 2. Ahhhhh ..... sweet Karma ......

Do the stores also have Vampire in stock? That's all I'm asking! I saw pre-order boxes this weekend, but not actual game boxes. Troika may have a good record of games, but based on screen shots and vids (that typically emphasize bouncing tits on vampire strippers), I am going to wait for a demo before I pull the trigger on Vampire, no matter how high-brow some fanbois claim it to be.

It's more anticipated if you are a semi-mature person with a brain and good taste in games Not to sound like a troll, but from the screenies and vids I have seen thus far on Vampire remind me more of Leisure Suit Larry than some high-brow RPG.

I think this game will go away in a few months, just like DOOM3 I am not so sure of that. I fired up HL1 a few weeks ago in anticiaption of the sequel. I still eneded having a fun time playing through. HL1 is the only game I have played through more than once, and I still have a great time playing it.
To a limited extent Halo PC gave me that same feeling (though the repetitive level design spoiled the overall experience a bit).
I think the smart AI keeps the gameplay fresh and engaging, regardless of how scripted the story might be.

Or, anything installed on Steam, you can right click on it (in Steam) and Create Desktop Shorcut Well, yeah, you could do that. But what's the fun in that?
Seriously though - I hate cluttering up my desktop - only thing I have is the recycle bin - otherwise its clean.

All your older Valve games (Half Life 1, Counterstrike, Opposing Force, etc) get automatically incorporated in to Steam, should you install them.
However, if all you have is Half Life 2 installed, you can access that directly though the HL2 executable. Look for it in your Steam apps folder - will be easier to understand once you get and install the game.

I keep hearing it's heavily scripted and very linear. Is it? From what I have seen so far (just picked up the crowbar, so have not gotten far), the answer is yes, it is just like the original in terms of scripting. But that does not mean the game sucks - from what I have seen, it is a great game. The AI seems just as good, and am looking forward to some memorable battles.
As for HL-Source, I plan to go back and play through that first, just for the sake of nostalgia, and then jump in to HL2. Though both games are scripted, the quality enemy AI make me come back for more.

does Steam need to remain installed or can it be removed No, Steam stays - that is how you access Valve's games. But it's not a big deal - just put it in off line mode and you are good to go.

Could someone please tell me - for sure - to play the Single Player game - what do I need to have concerning Steam, etc? Since you have dial up, buy the game retail. INstall it, go online and activate it (I assume the Steam application will be installed along with your HL2 install). It will take some time, so be patient (not because it is downloading a lot of stuff, but because it is decrypting the files on you HDD, which takes time). Once your copy is authenticated over steam, right-click on your HL2 game and go to properties, and enable HL to be played in off-line mode.
You should be set. Post over here if you have any questions or problems.

You guys do realize that whether you download off Steam or buy retail, you will still have to go though the unlocking process, right? And like others said, give it some time. It took about 10 min utes on my computer, and I think it had more to do with unpacking the encrypted 4 gig of files on my computer then anything to do with Steam.
HL-Source is taking longer then expected though. I have been downloading for past half hour and it has only gone from 76% to 84%. Looks like people are hammering Steam.
Oh well, HL2 is unlocked and on me system, and so far it's been great. I stopped right after I picked up my first weapon - the signature crowbar The rest will have to wait until after final exams

Cue more Valve bashing?
Seriously though, I feel sorry for the folks having this problem. My experiences have been bug free (so far :)). My advice to you is to wait until this is fixed so that you can truly enjoy this game - it is worth it!

No texture problems here either
Initial impressions - has the look and feel of the original. Only played about 10 minutes or so - quite a few scripted sequences, but they are well crafted and work as designed. I am already starting to hate the Combine.
One complaint - the levels are loaded just like in the original - in the middle of nowhere. But unlike last time, where it took a few seconds to load, in the sequel it takes a minute or two - and I have 1.5 gigs of memory! Takes you out of the game by disrupting the immersion.
All in all though - I think I am going to like this game. I can't quit put my finger on it, but there is just that something that makes me want to continue onwards and keep playing the game - just to reach that next goal. And once it is reached, something else happens, and I want to reach the next goal. And the next, and next, and so one.
Just like in the original game. This is a VERY good thing.
This is the feeling that was missing in Doom 3. Pretty and flashy graphics, but no gameplay. HL2 graphics may not be as fancy as Doom 3 (when you can see something in the darkness), but Source is pretty high up there. I would rate the Source graphics better then that of Far Cry, and up to par with Doom 3, but in a different way. The lighting is not as fancy as in Doom 3, but everything else is there in spades.
Okay, I gotta go and get ready for work. HL2 will have to wait untill the Christmas break after exams. And then I will play through HL-Source for nostalgia, and then start HL2.

8 Gig really ? just for HL2 ? Most people who have purchased from Steam have got the Silver package - which includes Valve's entire backlog of games - and you need 8 gigs for that. HL2 itself probably needs half that amount - about 4 gigs.
