It's a terrible spot to be in. If you buy it, you tell Ubi that their DRM scheme is ok. If you don't, they ignore all the hate toward the DRM and instead say that making sub sims is not profitable anymore and that's the end of Silent Hunter. If you pirate it, they say their DRM scheme is justified and they only wish they had used something even more restrictive. Behold the future of gaming. The only way to stop it is to stop buying Ubi's products, but that will never happen. Sub sim enthusiasts are going to buy Silent Hunter V no matter what they say, and the same will be true for any other product they release that some group of people actually want. They'll always end up wanting the game more than wanting to make a statement, and odds are they'll also think that some other group of gamers will make the statement for them. Then we're left with the figurative big crowd of people who all think the guy next to them will call 911, and nobody actually will.

I liked the quick travel in Oblivion. It lets you explore all you want, without having to go back over what you just saw to get back to the world and on with the game. Or if you've only got a half hour to play and want to accomplish something meaningful, quick travel let you spend your half hour doing something other than walking to the next step. It's not fun to spend a small chunk of free time traveling to the action, only so you can save and do the action some other time. Further, using fast travel in Oblivion didn't dramatically alter your odds of surviving a battle.

You can be very scared if you're armed to the teeth and can blow the crap out of anything that attacks.

I have to disagree. There's a big difference between being scared and being startled. One might be nervous waiting for the first encounter to pop out and startle them, but once it's dead, the player knows what to expect and more importantly the heavily-armed player knows he can often easily overcome it. Developers can try to change it around like Doom 3's monster closets, but you learn just as quickly there. It even makes it funny - walk backwards!

ie an enemy you didn't spot did spot you and comes charging you with 4 of his friends.

A true stealth game rewards you for that by killing you. You should never have an easy out when you make a novice mistake. All that does is teach you it's ok to cut corners because you'll always have that easy way out of trouble.

Only significant experience I have with cover mechanics is from Mass Effect and GTA IV. Man, GTA IV's cover was a joke. Once I discovered I was only marginally less accurate while firing "blind," I never did anything but. Just find a corner or a barricade, crouch, and headshot everyone in the area without ever exposing yourself to any risk. At least Mass Effect made you stand up or lean out to fire. I think if cover mechanics get any more overpowering, the game will be released in theaters.

I like the cover system from the good old days - if you want to avoid being shot, all you have to do is get behind something solid! And this system is so adaptive and flexible in that any solid object will do, rather than having to use certain places because they are scripted as valid locations for the cover system. And what about partial cover? You can find that almost anywhere too, unless you're playing a game with a cover system because then if you're not in a scripted safe place, the partial cover will often have no effect at all.

Kind of a shit deal if you own half the collection already. I'm sure plenty of extra people would buy collections if they could give the duplicate parts away. I sure would.

Dunno, the curve keeps changing. In Ohio's nursing schools, 75% is a failing grade. I think grade percentages are all bullshit anymore. Game reviews are silly though. Anything lower than 8/10 or 4/5 and you're a failure? But then at the same time, how often do review scores go that "low?"

By that wording it also sounds like he can't use them for entertainment or personal research.

Those models are crazy neat. Reminds me a lot of my city museum's miniature model of the city from decades ago. The photography tricks were excellent too.

Doubt that will ever happen, given that the game is about strategic command and not tactical.

Come to think of it, another reason for Microsoft to kill off PC in favor of the 360 is because they get a licensing fee for every single game unit sold for the 360. Of course, there is no such fee for selling a Windows-compatible product.

It's probably the same thing as OBSE not working with D2D's Oblivion. Apparently D2D uses their own DRM on the executable, and they are not willing to share its secrets to allow OBSE to work.

It seems like there are a lot of people who say they don't like it, but at this point I'm pretty sure it's because there are a lot of people related to it period. The minority is larger because the population is larger.

Well, why not? One could make a gaming console with off-the-shelf components vs having to pay hordes of people for years to write an OS, even if it's based heavily on the previous one.

So basically Emblaze's research boils down to finding a way to word a patent so the Patent Office would give it to them. Then instead of going after everyone who infringes "their" technology, they're just going after a couple of big targets to try to get an easy score. YouTube streams video too, but I'm sure they know better than to try to bully Google if the Chinese can't do it.

Next time I need to reformat I might consider Win7, if it's affordable by then. Otherwise, XP Pro suits me just fine.

I still don't get how people today can expect depth in an MMO. No, WoW does not have depth. Depth is not doing the same thing in different places. You just can't have depth in a meaningful way while having hundreds of players interact with each other at the same time.
