News Comments > UT2003 Patch Plans

Hah, Dagger you started out nice and balanced but wtf is up with the name calling? That's unnecessary, kinda puts you at the same level as that loser FarmerBob guy.

Forcing yourself to like a game is a bit pathetic. Nobody has to give UT2003 a chance. It's OK to not like UT2003. It's just another product and nobody owes Epic anything.

Many people have given a lot of good reasons why they don't like it. I'm one of them and my reasons are: It doesn't feel right (yes that is a valid argument), map design is very poor, no demo recording on release, and a general emphasis on graphics on expense of gameplay. Bottom line: great engine, boring game. A disappointment after the brilliant UT, and there are far superior games out there. If these opinions hurt your feelings, well tough.

Combining a gaming device and a phone? That doesn't make sense, they are completely unrelated products.

Shame about the partner, Ericsson is one of the world's worst corporate failures.

There's one more chair that sends you flying, and both cars do it too. I'm sure you will be able to use it to your advantage in the full game.

"Congratulations, sir, YOU ARE RETARDED!", "Think it through, fag", "moron alert!"... simple minds need strong words.

And #53: "...if I post a full game for download, youre still the one who has to commit the actual crime by downloading it..." - no, it's you who would be committing the crime. Also, as Mark Rein said, Epic wants action against the people spreading the software, not the gamers who dl it and use it.

I don't agree at all. Most of xomble's opinions sound like elitist bullshit to me.

There's no other definition of art than his/hers.
id, the large company that owns us (duh).
Stupid and destructive laws are good because they prevent parents from making some excuse.

Post #15 was idiotic, probably written in anger and frustration.

#10, I'd say that the first image, the "helicopter", was at the very least interesting.
I like radical theories because they may contain some truth. Why does that make me pitiful?

And thanks #32, just let us know next time a thread is finished and we will all stop posting.

"This ain't no thought control" - if you think so, fine. In my mind banning a symbol is by definition thought control. It wasn't such a big deal when the Taliban blew up all those Buddhist statues, was it? They were only symbols, irrelevant in an Islamic state and could only remind people of the past.

So what if the swastika etc are a representation of madness in a previous system. All the more reason to never let new generations forget what kind of regime was responsible. I know there are exceptions to the ban, but ask yourself why the politicians are afraid of seeing some nut waving a flag in the street. If he is so screwed-up nobody should pay attention to him, right? Isn't it better for the state to disregard him than messing around with the freedom of expression, which is just what the system you're critizising does? Censorship and prohibition is not even effective, it tends to drive things underground and create a base for organized crime.

On the other hand, if feeling eternal guilt and banning stuff is your way of showing respect, then by all means go ahead. Just don't let it go any further. Today it's them, tomorrow who knows what might be considered unacceptable.

Advertise it, #33? What makes you use that word? Do you suspect that a large number of people would be interested in what the neo-nazi movement has to offer? In that case, maybe the German people's biggest concern isn't guilt but something far worse.

About power: if any political movement wanted to gain power, would they be in any way stopped because the State threatened to throw them in jail? Hell yes. I was talking about banning *political parties*. That's what they do in many countries where human rights are violated. It has no place in the free world.

A closing post, OK. I was politely waiting for that lengthy response but it doesn't seem to be showing up.

"Touché, my ass" - uh, whatever. Actually the comment was spot on and elegantly highlighted the problem this thread is all about. Would you prefer "0wned"?

Someone earlier used the term "so fucking specific". Who was that again? Obviously the programs ran fine, or they would have had nothing to sell. We're discussing whether copy protection schemes are effective here. If anything, I think you assist in making my point that they're not. And cost money which has to be recovered by sales (roll the load over on legit users).

You may think that a consumer has a responsibility to cover any and all of costs during production and distribution, as well as deal with extra hassle. Well he doesn't; the price can exceed the value. If the company wants his money it will have to improve the product and/or lower the price. *That* is what capitalism is about.

/me thanks for your time.

#16: "this is done out of respect for the victims."

Bullshit. It is clearly because the politicians are afraid to lose their power. Everyone with their eyes open can see that. If the neonazi are forbidden, why ban the swastika when no one can use it to "spread nazi thoughts"? You can't argue that someone *might*, I presume you know why.

Is it the rulers' task to protect the people from doing itself harm? I can see why some may think it is (I don't) but the German Socialists have IMO gone far enough already by allowing themselves the right to ban dissident political movements. Remember, political organization and voting is the means the people has at its disposal to bring about change. Thought control is a disgrace and has no place in a democratic world.

(Do me a favour and don't even think about calling me pro-nazi. I am not, I am discussing principles.)

You people who curse and get all worked up need to calm down. I think we have established that piracy is bad by now.

#182: "Companies were resorting to physically mutilating the disc and writing code to detect the mutilations in an effort to protect their software...
So you're saying the vendors were intentionally releasing defective merchandise? Where's the ethics in that?"
Touché.

"cd-keys are a small price to pay."
For what? Pirates can evidently use a keygen to play online, while I as the legitimate user get to pay for the company's cdkey system, deal with auth server downtime, run the risk of getting banned etc. Sorry but I don't agree with you. Companies who offer a restricted or incomplete product scare customers like me away. I don't buy it, I don't warez it, I don't use it. I forget about it. That means no revenue, I don't care how many f***ing hours they worked on it.

#163: "As it is, I only pay for games which I really like. Other games which aren't so good, I only have on my computer for LAN parties, and play it because that's what everyone else is playing."
Are you serious? That's got to be the lamest excuse ever for not paying for your stuff.

#146, don't get me wrong... I pay for what I use. I just don't like some debaters' rather arrogant view that you somehow are a thief if you don't buy something. As I said before, I may like game XYZ but decide not to buy it because it costs too much. I go for another product. I can't see how team XYZ is helped by that.

I would like to pay the developer directly and triple their income, but where would the financing come from if we cut out the publisher?

"The argument that the games are too expensive is full of shit. Can't afford it? Too bad. Save your pennies and nickels until you can afford it."

So how does that help the developer and the publisher to get paid for their work? If I save my pennies there's no revenue. Games being expensive looks like a good argument to me.
As you said, they expect to be paid. But transactions are voluntary, you can't demand to be paid if there is no buyer.
