You can bet your bottom Australian Dollar that Bethesda will rectify the situation. They won't be missing out on all that moolah.

7. Sweet Jul 4, 2008, 01:09 Paranoid Jack

I have yet to finish the first one but have played it through repeatedly due to hard drive wipes and system rebuilds. Now I got to finish the last ten or twelve hours of play before I pick this one up.

Hope a few more developers license this engine. It would make a great cRPG. Too bad Piranha Bytes didn't just license it so they could spend more time polishing and less time building their last engine.

Either way it would have been pre-ordered already but GameStop (I miss your EBGames) didn't have a SKU (or whatever they call it) in their system.

The BC expansion didn't sell as well as that. I don't think they have even released the info on it. I know they have been bundling it with the original for quiet some time. Either way, yeah, your odds of getting in are about the same as being struck by lightening or winning the Lotto.

10. I'd try it out... Jul 3, 2008, 17:31 Paranoid Jack

Been over 15 months since I last played/paid via credit card (so yeah, if you were using a credit card for Burning Crusade your eligible, so it seems).

I hadn't played for over a year before BC hit shelves. I played it another two months after release of BC. Then quit and rejoined for another month early last year...

Still waiting to get my WAR beta invite. I was hoping they would throw me a bone since I also beta tested their previous games.

What video card you have? I had the occasional grey map but that was with my Nvidia card (8800 GTS 640). I just installed a HD 4850 because my wife's PC needed a new video cards so I bought this one and put the 8800 in her system. She's happy I'm happy and all for $199 plus tax.

Anyway I run it at 1900x1200 High and I have everything maxed. Getting about the same FPS (between 15 and 115 depending on the area and the PC population) but the game looks far better than before.

I'd bet everyone is getting those stalls. It started after the last patch for me. I get a short freeze then the message in the chat window saying the problem with my client has been reported.

5. What and Why? Jul 2, 2008, 13:00 Paranoid Jack

Don't know why you would call this game a mess. Is it perfect? No. Is it fun and entertaining? For me... Oh hell, yeah! Is it complete? No MMO is ever complete.

How quickly people forget. Even WoW was a nightmare to play the first few months. I remember having to wait thirty to sixty minutes just to be able to log in. Not to mention other issues. That said... WoW was extremely polished even in beta but hey not every studio is Blizzard.

Over-all I'd rank AoC's launch near the top. I've beta tested and played released games that were ten times worse. Anyone remember WW2 Online? ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II_Online ) I keep meaning to check this one out again. See if it's as good as some say.

Either way I am loving the game. And realize due to different tastes some people hate it. Such is life. Though I would like to invite you to be more constructive with your criticism. Give details. Sometimes a problem you are having or can't figure out is something others have already surpassed. Plus it informs others which may help them to avoid purchasing a game they won't enjoy.

Have fun either way.

Edit: Half Elf, I have Vista 64 and only have occasional crashes. Again nothing out of the norm. Most crashes happen when I go to desktop... to turn on Fraps for instance. I used Vista's built in tool to find a solution and it recommended I use the Auto Update Tool for AoC. Funny thing is I always launch with the Auto Updater. Just makes sense to check for a patch before you try to log in.

47. No Need... Jun 28, 2008, 12:53 Paranoid Jack

No need to convince you Overon. Like so many other things in life you have the freedom to like or dislike in your case. I'll agree with you slightly because I wasn't head over heels. I liked both games but both had pitfalls that wore me down over-time.

One bonus has been their great co-op support. I remember the weekend after release of Diablo II. A good gaming buddy and me played the game for hours (long enough to get into Act III) only to find that if we disconnected we would have to restart Act III and do it all again. This was before any patches.

That kind of slowed us down a bit but we had huge fun playing up to that point.

My take on Blizzard just rehashing old games is... stick to what you're good at. They are good at these three type of games now. So they remake them with new graphics, add a few features, axe a few features, and polish it like there is no tomorrow.

If they were to make a deep RPG would it sell? As long as they apply the same values... oh hell, yeah. But that is more of a risk. And the only risk they have taken in years was pouring millions into the development of WoW.

Look how that paid off. So I am waiting to see what their new IP will bring. My hopes hinge on it not being a console exclusive. And maybe if we are lucky they will finally do a deep RPG.

Edit: If they suddenly announced that Blizzard had acquired Piranha Bytes then I would go ape shit.

29. Sign Me Up For The CE Jun 28, 2008, 12:08 Paranoid Jack

Going to break out the old DII CE and watch bonus content before installing the game. One thing everyone should agree on is that Blizzard never go wrong with their CE content. Watching those CGI movies made me want to see the old ones again.

And I agree Vince. The little touches are very nice. But then attention to detail is their core. I'm hoping we see it sooner rather than later. But they won't release three products back to back for fear of competing against themselves for retail dollars.

Eight years and we'll just have to wait longer and try to be patient.

4. Re: AMD bests Nvidia Jun 27, 2008, 13:38 Paranoid Jack

I had the old ATI 9500 and the drivers were horrid. I had just bought Thief 3 (Thief: Deadly Shadows) and the shadows in the game would flash from darkest night to mid-day like a strobe. I could fix it by rolling back my drivers but that would cause issues with several other games I was playing at the time. So I constantly had to un-install and load drivers for each game. I've never had that issue with any other card. I've mostly bought Nvidia for the past six or eight years. The last four I have avoided ATI like the plaque.

I currently have an aging 8800 GTS 640 and that new 4850 will go toe to toe with everything out there from what I've seen... even beating the 280 out. The 4870 as well holds it's own. Price to performance they have a couple winners. Why pay three times as much for a 280 when a sub two hundred card can run most games as well or better at 1900x1200 (which is my native res)?

Watch for the OC editions to hit. They are running at higher FPS than the standard 4870 boards. I'm excited even if I have bad blood with ATI.

Edit: Disclaimer: All video cards run certain games better than brand X. So some games run best on one brand or the other. You got to take the entire spectrum into account. Buy for the price to performance ratio and what the card can do with the games you're currently playing. Peace.

1. AMD bests Nvidia Jun 27, 2008, 12:12 Paranoid Jack

I am seriously considering a purchase. The only thing holding me back is the memory of their (ATI's) poor driver support from years back.

This new single card holds it's own with the top of the line cards for a lot less money. And it would simply smoke my older GTS 640.

Either way I like where this is going. A shake-up or coup would be great for the consumers... us.

Has anyone bought one of these yet? They are as low as $169 with a mail-in rebate and they just came out.

"Did you actually play those games or did you just assume they were bad..?"

I played the demos and multi-player beta tested two of them. I was just tired of the same old. I figured I could always pick them up cheap after the hype wore off. I just haven't had any desire to play any of them. That's another reason STALKER hit the mark. Yes, it was a FPS but with a lot of spin to the old formula. Prez said it best...

"Call me unscrupulous, but concerning a game with such incredible atmosphere, I'm willing to forgive a lot."

11. Not Perfect But Still Great Jun 27, 2008, 01:33 Paranoid Jack

I know STALKER wasn't the perfect game. Because there will never be a perfect game. But it was a great game none the less. I had the same issues others had but the game-play and atmosphere over shadowed the few pitfalls. For me it was one of the best games I have ever played. I enjoyed it as much or more than most AAA titles like HL, HL2, etc.

But then I won't buy just any shooter these days. I skipped Crysis, Prey, FEAR, and a few others. Just too many good games not enough time.

8. I never got past the demo... Jun 26, 2008, 00:23 Paranoid Jack

I remember just learning the controls and while talking to the NPC at the camp fire... the game would randomly spawn one to four creatures nearly on-top of you while you're trying to read the dialog tree. I never even considered buying the game (even at bargain bin prices) after that.

As far as Blue's bloopers go today... I think the scotch (in remembrance of George) may still be flowing. Even Blue needs to be cut some slack now and then...

5. Re: What's the point? Jun 22, 2008, 14:38 Paranoid Jack

I agree Surf. For me it was ruined early on. I loved it while it lasted though. Not as much fun as competitive gaming with my old RvS Clan but still pretty damned fun. Sad thing is nothing is bullet proof and there are idiots out there lining up to find exploits and create hacks. Even worse are the scum who download their skillz or buy them.

Only sure way (and even then you have hackers masquerading) is to play with friends or a tight Clan that has high enough moral standards to ban cheaters.

PB is a joke. Not sure how secure VAC is but I've never seen anything in game that proves it's a broken system like PB. Either way people who play games by the set rules purely for the fun of it are a minority.

Running it at 1900x1200 with mostly high settings on a 8800 GTS 640. Not smooth as butter but I'm not expecting that.

Looks fantastic and runs good enough for a MMO. Not expecting FPS frame rates... but then the last few FPS games didn't give anyone great frame rates either.
