It does look pretty good. I almost bought ArmA2 but had too much else to play. Now I'm looking at the number of games hitting the shelves all within a few weeks of each other. On certain days there are as many as four big titles hitting across the 3 platforms. I'm thinking OF:DR is going to have to wait a few months before I pick it up.

That's good for me since I'll be able to read more user comments and reviews about it before I get it at a marked down price.

News Comments > Aion Open Beta Client Downloads
12. Re: Aion Open Beta Client Downloads Aug 29, 2009, 00:45 Paranoid Jack

I enjoyed the time I spent in closed beta but not sure it will matter come release since I don't feel like buying a $50 MMO a week or so before so many huge titles hit. I won't have enough time to play Aion and the games due out the week or two following it. Of course I may change my mind if I get bored.

I tried to go back to LotR (and AoC) recently but couldn't seem to pick up where I had left off. There just wasn't anything compelling me to play long enough to relearn their abilities and the play styles I had set up.

I've still got the open beta access and the early access to decide...

"thee them"?

Is he drunk or is it just a lisp?

But yes, sank you Blue!

Edit: These sales are killing me. But the credit card companies will love me. Plus I'm helping the US economy! Booyah!

You know these digital distribution methods will never catch on. People love to have the disc in their hands. They love the process of going to LameStop and dealing with some snotty punk ass teenager.

All kidding aside. I still loving buying certain games on DVD, And yeah I'm still a sucker for the right CE packaging.

13. Re: The Old Republic Video Walkthrough Aug 22, 2009, 22:49 Paranoid Jack

I love the look of the game but the combat (at least some of it) I'm not so sure about. The light saber combat looks good (far better than blaster combat) over all though it does appear far weaker than should be. And bounty hunters don't run and hide but why not use cover? I liked the smuggler cover system except the shooting blindly from behind cover to kill a target so far away also behind cover?

Some of the videos brought back memories (not good ones) of Tabula Rasa. I know it's an MMO but why must combatants always stand out in the open? Also the cover didn't appear to make the targets any harder to hit or kill.

Hope to get into the beta at some point. Must admit the video of Guild Wars 2 has me more excited.

I'll admit I too have gone from excited to meh (several times)... and finally just looking forward to a good cRPG. Bad news for Bioware is that two other cRPG games are hitting the shelves just weeks before DAO.

Risen which has been really hushed and with little to no PR campaign. And then Alpha Protocol. Not to mention Demon's Souls on the PS3. If Risen can pull off a polished spiritual successor to Gothic and gain word of mouth the RPG crowd is going to be split into four.

Some will go nutts and buy all of them on release but most of us will play it smart and play them one at a time... maybe two at once.

These latest videos are really restoring my faith in Diablo3. I'm down for the CE, again... if they include all the sweet extras the last one did.

29. Re: Several Years Until All of StarCraft II is Completed Aug 19, 2009, 21:52 Paranoid Jack

"Does adding complexity make something more fun?"

Why, yes it does in most cases if done properly. Ever played a RTS on the console and compared it to almost any RTS on the PC?

"Would TF2 suddenly become a better game if we added leaning or a cover system like Gears of War?"

Apple meet Orange... but yes, again. I think the old tactical shooters with lean and no 3rd person view were the best.

"Why are bunkers "last century", and why are your ideas of trenches or barricades any better?"

Have you only played limited RTS on the PC? Ever try Company of Heroes, Men of War, Faces of War, Dawn of War, Dawn of War 2, or Soldiers: Heroes of WW2? More tactical options means a better game for everybody. Even if you choose not to use them at least you have a choice.

So you think your troops walking up to a bunker shooting until they die or optionally they hold up shields while standing in the open shooting until they die is good enough? I'm not saying it can't be fun but I'm just tired of the old mechanics. We've been playing them since Age of Kings and Warcraft. Probably before that.

Oh, correct me if I'm wrong but the bunkers are stationary and part of a level right? Or can you build them anywhere in SC2? I haven't been following it closely, sorry.

The video looks better than the last one I saw. They need to leave the old school mechanics behind though. Which it appears they haven't. I hate the old groups/units standing out in the open shooting until they die. It will be 2010 before they release this.

Move the RTS out of last century. Let's use cover and fight like we're not in the Colonial era when troops just lined up in rows and shot at each other until everyone fell over dead.

If they have the knowledge to travel in outer space surely they can come up with some better tactics. Use tanks or ranged attack vehicles? Maybe dig trenches or build barricades?

The short clip of the APC was the only ray of light.. well besides the airship raining fire on the mass of unprotected aliens attacking in a large group waiting to be shot to hell.

I may give it a go when it hits bargain bins in ten years....

WAR and AoC have the best PvP but WAR has the best RvR game-play in my opinion.

I downloaded and wanted to give it a go but their damned GameGuard shit won't run or install correctly on Windows 7. I sent them an e-mail a month or so back... they never responded. No wonder it tanked.

Has anyone here used SSDs for any length of time? At the Evil Empire we've been using the latest generation of Tough Book for more than a year (possibly two, I can't be sure). It has a SSD that goes dead quite a bit. I'm on my third one in just over a year. Another tech is on his fourth. Last time I had to change mine out I tried finding a name brand but couldn't. My guess is it's some generic SSD Panasonic is having manufactured in mass. Either way I won't be switching over anytime soon....

Sounds good. What do you know about the PC development? Was the game developed for PC or the X-Box... which is the ported version? Will the PC version have a huge console GUI?

My guess is that Risen will be the next title to slip into 2010. Though I hope not.

edit: I haven't been following it's development but hope to purchase it before DAO hits a month or so later. Bad news is Alpha Protocol hits the next day (if they both keep to their schedules). After watching a bit and seeing some screens I must say I'm more excited about Risen than any other cRPG at the moment. The only thing that could ruin that is if it's got show stoppers and performance issues. Not to mention consolitis would be a drag...

News Comments > DoubleBear's Zombie RPG
27. Re: DoubleBear's Zombie RPG Aug 9, 2009, 11:56 Paranoid Jack

"Agreed, though it's stated here that the zombies are infected with a virus, rather than being genuinely undead. It would still make sense to have slow zombies though, as the virus could deteriorate their muscles. The freshly infected would be less deteriorated and thus faster and stronger.

The infection mechanics could also be very interesting. What if one of your party members gets bitten? Do you kill him/her on the spot or try to hold off and find a cure? If you already have a cure, do you use it on anyone that gets infected or just your favorites? And if you have a cure, what are other non-infected willing to do to get it? Hell, what do you do if you get infected yourself? The forum post says you don't play a zombie but you may still be able to get infected and have a limited time to save yourself. And if you do get infected, would that make zombies ignore you because they only care about non-infected? If so, you could gain access to places that would be suicide runs for non-infected. I really hope the game explores all the potential depth that infection mechanics could provide."

I love where you were going with that. I hope they use all of those ideas and more.

"it would only be interesting if you were half-zombie.. infected in some way but still mostly coherent, perhaps phasing in and out of "zombie mode" or some shit like this - it also wouldn't work that well with shambling, slow type zombies because that would be fucking annoying to play"

I was thinking along these lines also. Only slow Zombies would get stale. But if your team can or does get infected that adds tons of possibilities. Once infected there could be a set time range giving the player so many hours (minimum & maximum) before total control is lost. The story-line could also include a vaccine that was not widely distributed for one reason or another. Giving the player even more game-play options... if he/she has the vaccine in their posesion.

Also there could be a scale set into motion once infect the player gradually becomes faster and stronger than a normal human. Reaching that peak you could plateau or start a decline to eventually reach the brain dead shambler focused on nothing but feeding. During the entire process you would have to closely monitor your attributes since they would gradually change... for better and worse.

Sounds like a game I'd buy for full price.

"when the fuck is age of decadence coming out? dude - bring it already

having an age of impatience over here "

Yeah, I stopped visiting the site regularly because my frustration was mounting. I'm keeping a distant eye on it. Still it's painfully slow getting here.
