Well it's now 9:12 and both the log in server is down and their website is unreachable. Hmmm....

edit: Even worse is the 30+ seconds of load time to get to the log in screen, the ten seconds after entering your info to fail, and followed by the brilliance of their program's auto shut down.

Was actually thinking about buying this to play for the free month... not so sure now.

edit 2: More humor ensues... the log in servers came up. Told me I didn't have authorization to log in because I haven't made my payment. Not in those exact words but that was the gist of it.

8. Dragon Age Origins on D2D Sep 4, 2009, 00:54 Paranoid Jack

Warden's Keep
Discover what happened to the Grey Wardens order at their darkest hour and unlock secrets hidden for generations. This new content will lead you on a harrowing adventure with all new achievements, unlockable character abilities, powerful items, and much more!

Is this something specific to D2D? I haven't heard of this bonus quest before. All CE purchases give you The Stone Prisoner quest from what I've seen. And a few variants on items so far.

edit: Just noticed the D2D version is $5 more also...

News Comments > Blizzard: New MMOG "Significantly Different" from WoW
3. Re: Blizzard: New MMOG Sep 1, 2009, 21:26 Paranoid Jack

What do they expect? People to pay for 2 at once? GTFO Blizzard. You made a great MMO no doubt. But there's no way people will pay for 2 at the same time. That's just lunacy.

I'm not so sure about that. I've paid for two subscriptions at once before though I'll admit it wasn't for more than a couple months. What it always comes down to in/with games is that you want to play the one you like the most. Nothing else matters. At least this is how it's been for me for the most part.

It's almost too funny that they are worried about pulling subscribers away from their current cash cow.

Lately I can't go back to anything (MMO) that I've already played and left behind for whatever reason. I've tried all the come-back to us specials and not one has made me stay more than the week or two that was free.

I wish they'd just release the damned info and stop the media whoring.

News Comments > Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising Co-op Trailer
15. Re: Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising Co-op Trailer Aug 30, 2009, 22:13 Paranoid Jack

The one thing I really really hate about so-called "realistic" games is how they just make everything needlessly complicated and counter intuitive. If they could keep the realistic ballistics and damage models, but keep the communications and control schemes as simple as real life I'd be more keen on games like this.

That is my take. It's too bad they can't find the middle ground. I can play CoD but only so much before I grow tired. Earlier I was referring to the cone of fire spamming of a single target not squad tactics. Meaning... I hate having to put most of a clip (or an entire clip) into a guy before he goes down. I usually go for the upper body hit hoping to get the head shot (if possible) before the weapon starts jumping. More and more it seems the cone of fire is randomly deciding if my round hits. Even in games where you see a visual indication of a hit... like a blood spurt... it doesn't always equate to a hit on the target.

Maybe I'm just getting too old for this genre?

Do you mean suppressing fire? Yes, it does kill targets but the main reason is to pin them down while they are flaked. Beside I don't want total realism just less arcade game mechanics.

No Valtyr, you've hit the nail on the head. May have understated the problem just a bit... in my opinion. I prefer the more realistic game-play over console shooter mechanics any day. Not that the simplistic shooters can't be fun. To me a kill is so much more rewarding when it has taken skill to achieve it. Not just running around spraying automatic fire at a target and waiting for the cone of fire to land a killing hit.

I doubt we'll ever see another big budget shooter leaning more toward realism. The last that I liked being the older Clancy games. Though OPFP, ArmA, and early AA were close enough.

Again, I loved 1942, BFV, BF2 (until they ruined it), and even enjoyed a bit of the 1st/3rd Person console style games with blind shooting from cover... though I must say that was truly the final blow, the nail in the coffin of the realistic shooter.

R.I.P.

It does look pretty good. I almost bought ArmA2 but had too much else to play. Now I'm looking at the number of games hitting the shelves all within a few weeks of each other. On certain days there are as many as four big titles hitting across the 3 platforms. I'm thinking OF:DR is going to have to wait a few months before I pick it up.

That's good for me since I'll be able to read more user comments and reviews about it before I get it at a marked down price.

12. Re: Aion Open Beta Client Downloads Aug 29, 2009, 00:45 Paranoid Jack

I enjoyed the time I spent in closed beta but not sure it will matter come release since I don't feel like buying a $50 MMO a week or so before so many huge titles hit. I won't have enough time to play Aion and the games due out the week or two following it. Of course I may change my mind if I get bored.

I tried to go back to LotR (and AoC) recently but couldn't seem to pick up where I had left off. There just wasn't anything compelling me to play long enough to relearn their abilities and the play styles I had set up.

I've still got the open beta access and the early access to decide...

You know these digital distribution methods will never catch on. People love to have the disc in their hands. They love the process of going to LameStop and dealing with some snotty punk ass teenager.

All kidding aside. I still loving buying certain games on DVD, And yeah I'm still a sucker for the right CE packaging.

13. Re: The Old Republic Video Walkthrough Aug 22, 2009, 22:49 Paranoid Jack

I love the look of the game but the combat (at least some of it) I'm not so sure about. The light saber combat looks good (far better than blaster combat) over all though it does appear far weaker than should be. And bounty hunters don't run and hide but why not use cover? I liked the smuggler cover system except the shooting blindly from behind cover to kill a target so far away also behind cover?

Some of the videos brought back memories (not good ones) of Tabula Rasa. I know it's an MMO but why must combatants always stand out in the open? Also the cover didn't appear to make the targets any harder to hit or kill.

Hope to get into the beta at some point. Must admit the video of Guild Wars 2 has me more excited.

I'll admit I too have gone from excited to meh (several times)... and finally just looking forward to a good cRPG. Bad news for Bioware is that two other cRPG games are hitting the shelves just weeks before DAO.

Risen which has been really hushed and with little to no PR campaign. And then Alpha Protocol. Not to mention Demon's Souls on the PS3. If Risen can pull off a polished spiritual successor to Gothic and gain word of mouth the RPG crowd is going to be split into four.

Some will go nutts and buy all of them on release but most of us will play it smart and play them one at a time... maybe two at once.

News Comments > Several Years Until All of StarCraft II is Completed
29. Re: Several Years Until All of StarCraft II is Completed Aug 19, 2009, 21:52 Paranoid Jack

"Does adding complexity make something more fun?"

Why, yes it does in most cases if done properly. Ever played a RTS on the console and compared it to almost any RTS on the PC?

"Would TF2 suddenly become a better game if we added leaning or a cover system like Gears of War?"

Apple meet Orange... but yes, again. I think the old tactical shooters with lean and no 3rd person view were the best.

"Why are bunkers "last century", and why are your ideas of trenches or barricades any better?"

Have you only played limited RTS on the PC? Ever try Company of Heroes, Men of War, Faces of War, Dawn of War, Dawn of War 2, or Soldiers: Heroes of WW2? More tactical options means a better game for everybody. Even if you choose not to use them at least you have a choice.

So you think your troops walking up to a bunker shooting until they die or optionally they hold up shields while standing in the open shooting until they die is good enough? I'm not saying it can't be fun but I'm just tired of the old mechanics. We've been playing them since Age of Kings and Warcraft. Probably before that.

Oh, correct me if I'm wrong but the bunkers are stationary and part of a level right? Or can you build them anywhere in SC2? I haven't been following it closely, sorry.

The video looks better than the last one I saw. They need to leave the old school mechanics behind though. Which it appears they haven't. I hate the old groups/units standing out in the open shooting until they die. It will be 2010 before they release this.

Move the RTS out of last century. Let's use cover and fight like we're not in the Colonial era when troops just lined up in rows and shot at each other until everyone fell over dead.

If they have the knowledge to travel in outer space surely they can come up with some better tactics. Use tanks or ranged attack vehicles? Maybe dig trenches or build barricades?

The short clip of the APC was the only ray of light.. well besides the airship raining fire on the mass of unprotected aliens attacking in a large group waiting to be shot to hell.

I may give it a go when it hits bargain bins in ten years....
