Then turn off automatic game updates. I mean, I and millions of others actually prefer playing the latest patched version of the game even if it makes me wait a few minutes, but the option is there to get a quicker, more inferior experience. Don't bitch about Steam when you're too lazy to explore the options it presents to you.

Yeah, and I can uninstall all my software so that Windows boots faster and I can write-protect my HDDs so they won't become fragmented.

Whatever you say, I am not a troll. I don't work for Microsoft or any of its partners.

I guess people will say Creston and I are the same person now.

I don't have a slow computer, on the contrary, I have a Core i7@3.2 GHz, 6 GB of DDR3-1600 and a GTX 285. I have several HDDs so I can have my games on a separate physical drive from the OS and the pagefile is on a separate drive again from the OS and the games. I have AHCI SATA enabled for native command queuing.

And I still maintain that the Steam client sucks.

WTF? Steam runs amazingly fast... never had a problem. Perhaps an upgrade is in order for you? No, actually, Steam runs blazingly fast on my girlfriend's crummy laptop. Nevermind, you must have some serious PC issues.

You must be accustomed to slow and unresponsive applications if you think the Steam client is fast. It isn't and it has never been and it is the main reason I don't use it even though I have games on it.

Whatever one might think of GFWL, it doesn't detract from the fact that the Steam client is cumbersome and annoyingly slow. If I ever bother to install it again, I'll be sure to turn off the overlay as someone said was possible. I haven't found a way before, but I'll search more thoroughly ... that is, if I ever can be assed to install the piece of shit again.

You mean the way it's in the way and offers no useful features?
It's in the way? You don't have to run the damn client for one. In-game you can press Home to access it. You can have it auto-logon. I've never actually run the client on its own. There's just no need.

......

It's true. The Steam client is unresponsive, slow and cumbersome and it has a stupid overlay system.

The Steam client is a pile of shit. I like the way GFWL integrates with games much more than the way Steam does it.

I had to double-take too. if software, on my keyboard f is next to d.

I think id could shut this down in an instant: it uses their trademark, and it mentions UAC.

Is it blessed by id?

I understand, Prez.

To everyone else, I would be grateful if someone, anyone could perform my benchmark experiment in post #39

39. GTA4 perf. goes bad Mar 23, 2009, 03:41 Bludd

Hey, Prez. Would you mind doing a little experiment? I am having basically the same problems but my hardware is up to snuff.

This is open to anyone else of course.

Run 13 or 15 or whatever benchmark runs in succession without closing the game between each run. I lose about 20% from the first benchmark to the thirteenth or so.

Use the highest settings you can get away with without using any commandline arguments that remove restrictions.

My settings are: everything at absolute max except textures which are set to medium. Remember that texture filtering have a step above very high which is called highest. If the settings are playable or not is what this is about, it is the delta in average FPS between the first and the last runs.

Post your CPU, GPU, GPU driver and OS too.

i7 920@3.2 GHz, GTX 285, GeForce 182.08 WHQL, XP32SP3

My results:
run 1 49.50
run 2 48.17
run 3 47.05
run 4 44.71
run 5 43.97
run 6 43.68
run 7 43.39
run 8 43.60
run 9 43.45
run 10 41.99
run 11 40.99
run 12 40.02
run 13 39.55

The worst part of Steam is the Steam client, without a doubt. I hate it so much.

Ah, found one!

I had to use IE7 to get this, it didn't want to work with Firefox.

Yeah, I haven't uninstalled drivers in years. Only when going from one gfx vendor to another do I think it is worth it to uninstall drivers.

I guess that answers my question - are these the same as the 182.05 betas except with WHQL certification.

Nope, they fix this bug:
GeForce 9800 GTX/GX2/GT/GTX+, GeForce 8800 GTS/GT/GS: The system
hangs when switching between performance states. [516808]
