It's perhaps a modest indicator, but the Japanese dating sims released in America (which, being targeted at the American market, tend to sit more on the sex side of the continuum than the dating side) attract a fairly good percentage of female gamers. Hey, girls playing volleyball in bikinis was enough to get an M rating for DOA: EXTREME BEACH VOLLEYBALL. It's all part of a crazed Puritan tradition of 300+ years.

How it looks to me is that we'll be getting still more games where "dynamic lighting" means stumbling around through pitch darkness trying to find some cracked wall that you're intuitively supposed to knock down while fighting off creatures whose positions are marked only by flashes of gunfire. I miss the days where I didn't have to crank up the brightness and gamma just to see where I'm going in a shooter.

if you realize the context, as detailed by one site: "In Theravadin Buddhist countries (such as Thailand), a man is regarded as 'unfinished' if he has not served, for however briefly, as a monk. Therefore, most young men will be ordained, usually before marriage, for a period of three months, during the rainy season lasting from mid July to mid October."

(shrug) Freelancer was an easy game to get my friends into for LAN parties, since they don't have computers at home and haven't spent half their lives learning interface conventions. It was a nice change of pace after years of Diablo II, UT and Delta Force.
